ugh! Cole's fussiness the past few days is crazy! He's not wanting to nap longer than 20-30 minutes every couple of hours, and is cranky/tooty the rest of the time (gas drops don't help). Gotta be either the inability to sleep on his back or the addition of cereal to his diet this week (Dr. said he needs the iron/is too pale).

He's now 4 1/2 months old. When we started solids (pureed vegetable) a couple of weeks ago, his poopies decreased, but his mood didn't change too much. Then, about the same time, he started rolling over from tummy to back. He sleeps on his tummy, so he's unhappy/not a good sleeper on his back. Sometimes, he'll stay on his side and sleep a good hour or two.

I'm just wondering if any of you have experiences in this area. . . Please share!

Hi Tyra & Cole!!

Did you start first with rice cereal? That is what we are doing right now w/ Logan and he loves it. I haven't tried baby food yet, but I wonder if Cole is having an allergy/reaction to the food you are giving him. Logan is the same and will NOT sleep on his back! He has been rolling from back to stomach for quite a while, but in the past few days has started rolling from stomach to back. Once I went in b/c he was screaming during his afternoon nap and he had rolled onto his back and couldn't fall back asleep!

Maybe he is starting to teeth and the pain from his gums is waking him up. Sounds like his fussiness might be b/c he is tired b/c he is not getting enough sleep. That also happened w/ Logan (these two have a lot in common!) and we would apply a little baby orajel and it would many times calm him enough to fall back asleep. Also, sometimes before bed I would give him a small dose of children's Tylenol and that would help him sleep. About 2 weeks ago, Logan started waking up every 1-2 hours throughout the middle of the night, and I had just started back to work part time. I was going crazy! Well, I decided to let him cry himself to sleep after the advice of many other mommies and literally after 2 days he was sleeping soooo much better! I used to have to rock him to sleep standing up before every nap and at bedtime, sometimes taking up to an hour. It was so tiring. Now, he goes to bed about 8pm and I just put him in his crib after he eats and he looks around and whines for about 10-15 minutes, never really cries, and then he is out for the night. Sometimes he will wake in the middle of the night and stir, and I just let him. I think that he has gotten used to the idea of falling asleep on his own and it has made mommy, daddy and baby all much happier!

Sorry if I got off on another subject, but I just wanted to let you know of my experiences since our babies are so close(I mean exact!) in age.

You may want to try a different kind of cereal like the baby oatmeal. It should have the same amount of iron, but it will keep him more regular. He may be having some tummy troubles from the rice cereal.

As far as him rolling onto his back and then not being able to sleep, our DD kinda went through that too, only it was the opposite for her. She would roll onto her tummy and then get mad. Anyway, it did affect her sleep for a week or two until she kinda got used to the feeling of being where she did not want to be.

If he is really cranky too, I would definitely check for teeth coming in. He is prime age for them to start popping in. If you can see anything you may want to try some Tylenol. That really helped our DD rest and just not be such a crab when her teeth were bothering her.

Hang in there. Keep us posted if anything new comes up or you figure out the mystery fussiness. ;-)

Effectiveness of diatomaceous earth against earthworms, if any, is at best transient. Probably a waste of good money. Most earthworms prefer soils of neutral to slightly acidic pH (6.0-9.0), although some prefer more acidic conditions. As I understand it, mosses prefer growing on firmly packed acidic soils with a pH between 5.0 and 5.5. Perhaps you can make a moss garden less attractive by creating an "island" of more acidic soil, optimum for mosses but less so for earthworms. However, acidiying the soil for the mosses/earthworms may be detrimental to other plants in that spot (e.g., the tree your mosses are growing under). There are no magic bullets. Gathering earthworms by hand and removing them, poisoning them, etc., is going to be a lot of work/expensive with no result in the long run. If the environment is desirable for the worms, their population will grow to the sites carrying capacity. If you can modify the environment so it is less desirable for earthworms but good for what you are trying to grow, then you have a chance. If you are in the northeast, the worms you may be struggling with aren't the introduced european lumbricids, but asian earthworms. These are very different beasts. They overwinter in the northeast as eggs that hatch out in the spring, develop to maturity and die in the winter. You can recognize them by having the clitellum (the swollen ring of segments on adults) further forward than on lumbricids, and they are EXTREMELY active -- they can flip right out of your hand if you pick them up. They tend not to burrow into the mineral soil, but burrow through and decompose the organic/litter layer. In Pennsylvania, there are reports of them hurting nursery operations by getting into containers of perennial plants and literally eating up the soilless potting media. No know solution.

Weste - Wait until you've quilted for 16 years, and you have a closet literally bursting with quilts on hangars - ok, it's a small closet, but those are just the big bed quilts. I've been kinda choosey about who gets my quilts - I'll gladly give them to my brothers, and my kids and grandkids, as I know they do appreciate them, but just recently, my DH's ex-stepmother, and the wife of his ex-step-brother (EX is the operative word!) were in town, and I showed them my closet, and the other closet where the unquilted tops were hung, and their general comment was "I'd like a quilt - when are you going to give me one? Who do you give them to?" I just laughed those comments off, and pretty much ignored them. The ex-step-mother is not my favorite person, either. It's definitely an emotional process to give up something you've created with care!

Thanks all....for the compliments on the house and the well wishes. I'm trying to take it slowly (n'dank & n'dank in Wolof) but that's not easy for me :-). In regards to the house, all of the pics were taken prior to my purchase. So the owner's belongings and their love of teal green is apparent. What is not so apparent was the amount of crap (both literally and figuratively) they had stored away. When this house first came on the market, I said to myself, "There is no way you can afford it. It's already a bit past my price range, and it's so cute, it will go in a bidding war" (also because the neighborhood school is one of the best in the state). That's when my RE agent called and told me about the broker open house and the zoo that was the basement and DR. And, so, 8 months later, the house is empty, the kitchen and bath are down to the studs, and I'm planning its rebirth. Marti-Thanks for the compliments. The teal is the previous owner's favorite color...which will go away, along with the white paint on the trim, sometime in the foreseeable future. And yes, I have a 6 month expiration on the trailer. First snow is usually around early December here in New England, so I figure by then, I need to be somewhere with thicker (and insulated) walls. Particularly since my current electric bill (with the trailer running off it) is approx. $200 a month...can't imagine those utilities with a trailer heated by electric. And isn't it amazing what people will live with? The PO's son lived in a ramshackle basement room, with the bunny rabbit cage right outside his door, with unimaginable smells and mold. Unbelievable. My Dad was up here during the first month of recovery to finish off my half-baked projects, and I'm hoping my cousin (who is a contractor is Saint Croix) will come up, since he's slow right now. But hey, I'll keep you in the Rolodex! In regards to financing, I hate to think about taking out a second or personal to finance the repairs....particuraly since I'm financially exhausted, having to carry both the house & condo for 8 months. My lender, who is very good, just contacted me about a refi, which I might do, then take the extra $$ per month and sock it away for repairs. I'd rather take it slow, and live in a half finished house, then worry about more debt. Oh, and Navi comes from an previous company, although my Dad is a sailor and my brother was in the Navy. Maybe it's karma talking. And I completely understand about the smoke...my friend just bought a certified pre owned Audi A4, and I could tell within seconds that the previous owner was a smoker. How I lived 18 years with 2 smoking parents is beyond me. Sandy: Thank you for such kind words and good advice about pet cleanup. One of the first post-construction tasks is to get a dog, and I want to keep dog hair to a minimum. Good to know there are things out there to battle the smell on a regular basis :-) Chris, Steph, Retire: Thanks, but the clean is yet to come. I lost my camera in the move and pre-surgery hysteria. I'm buying one today, and will post pictures of the demolition site that is my current house. Writers: I hear what you are saying...thank you. I stop now at the first twinge of discomfort and sit for 15 to 20 minutes. Heck, I had to sit down between cutting my 4 shrubs and raking up the shrub-kill. Hard transition from someone who worked 12 hour weekend days doing demo. But hey, I'm not going anywhere, it's the house I could to grow old in, and I keep trying to remind myself the GW & Old House Forum Motto of "not letting the house demolish your life". Hi cerileen- I really like the room with the two blue velvet sofas. The color is rich, warm and inviting, and dark enough to work for a family, but not so dark as to be gloomy. But rather than a loveseat, if your room is large enough, I would get two sofas. A loveseat is really too small. Two adults really don't want to sit that close together. There are many fabrics that can give you that velvet feel. You can choose one that is relatively indestructible, stain-proof and waterproof. There are so many shades of deep blue, too, you can find just the one that works for you. Blue goes with everything, you can pick whatever accent you like for pillows and throws, and if you like, you can pick warmer colors for the winter (reds, rusts,oranges, umbers, ochres, yellows) and switch them out for cooler colors (blues, pale blues, greens, purples, lavenders) for the spring and summer. Or you can use the same accent colors all year long, there are no hard and fast rules anymore. You can use a light neutral for the curtains which would be a good idea with a saturated color on the sofas. And if you like, you can add a trim of the same shade of blue to the curtains such as a stripe at the inner and outer edge of the curtains, and if you want, a thicker stripe at the bottom hem. For your chairs, you can do a neutral fabric, or a print with many colors that will have your blue plus your accent colors in a weave or a stripe or a print, whatever is your fancy, and coordinate the throw pillows with that print. You can do two chairs like that, or one chair like that, and if your husband, must have a leather chair, then get a leather chair for him. Unless you really want a wing chair, you don't have to get one. There are some very nice well-stuffed club chairs with rounded silhouettes and backs high enough. If you think your husband would want to put his feet up, you can get him a smaller ottoman or foot stool for the front of his chair. Round end tables are a good idea, as they will be complementary to your tuxedo-style sofas which are a great choice. I would absolutely not get a round sofa table. As a family, you may well sit on the floor and play games at that sofa table, or your son may play games at that table with his friend while the adults carry on a conversation seated on the sofa. It is rather awkward to set up a game board on a round table. You definitely want a table large enough for a game board and drinks and snacks. If you did not have a child, I would have suggested a big square ottoman for a sofa table, but given that your sofa table may also serve as a game table, something more solid would serve your purposes better. Also, with a child, fiddling with trays on which to serve food and drinks is just too tricky. Do get a sofa table with casters that lock, or else your son may jiggle the table around, and your drinks will be all over the floor. Or you can buy a table you otherwise like and switch out the legs, just make sure they are thick enough to put in locking casters that you can get from any woodworking catalog like Rockler's. You might also be able to get them at Home Depot or Lowe's. Another thing, please only buy upholstered furniture that you have sat on. Comfort is of paramount importance. So many things matter besides what color the piece is and the cushions are made of. And inch and a half difference in seat length or height or 10 degrees difference in back incline can make you miserable, or comfortable for the first time in your life! Another thing, if you are going to buy a rug, think about a rug made by Ruggable. Thanks guys! You have given me some great clues. I think his fussiness was due to many factors, including: tummy adjustment to the rice ceral (I think he does better with oatmeal), inability to sleep well on his back, teething (drooling and chewing a lot), his 4 mo. shots were this week, and also (mainly, I think) he had some redness/irritation around his wee (we hadn't been cleaning the area where he's been circumcised well enough). :-(

That's great, Andrea. We also have 8pm bedtime, just after a story. I still feed him (nurse) one more time (before I go to bed - around 10pm) and he sleeps until 6am -- sometimes earlier, but he stays in the crib playing/talking/fussing/whatever until 6am. This has helped him to entertain himself so well. Nice to wake up to a cooing rather than crying baby! Still likes to fuss at naptimes, though. Guess he needs to wind down. Does Logan need a nap/get cranky after just a couple hours of waketime, too?

Yes, Karla, I think the rice is not so good on his tummy. Maybe I can use it mixed with fruits/applesauce later on, since I do have a BIG box to use! I sure wish Cole could sleep on his back better. I have been letting him fuss some to get used to the idea. If he's extra tired, he won't even roll over, anyway. I also wish he could sleep better out in public places/other people's homes. I go to playgroups/church meetings/stores where naptime comes and he fights it. Guess he prefers his warm crib with the fan going (white noise - drowns out the neighbors dog). He will sleep in the car, now, and has fallen asleep in his bouncy and during story time, but not without a little fussing. I don't go out too much, I try to plan things during his waketime (is this a bad idea?). Then, days where I can't, his nap schedule is interrupted -- is there a way to get him to 'sleep anywhere'? I've seen other babies do it and I'm in shock!!

I am guessing as his tummy gets more used to regular foods, that you could use that rice cereal at a later date mixed with fruits or something.

When DD was younger I was always planning our outings around her wake times. I too would see babies that could sleep anywhere. (I always *guessed* that most of those babies were not on much of a routine, so sleeping anytime anywhere would not be disturbing to them. Again, just a guess.) Anyway, I think there were two factors that played a role for us. One, DD was very into her routine in that she always knew what to expect. That was a good thing, except when I would be out and instead of her being able to take a nap anywhere, she knew that was not where she was supposed to be to sleep! (LOL) Second, I think age played a part of it. While DD is still very much into her routines, we have found that she is more flexible at this age as far as where she will sleep, etc. So, to make a long story short, I think the big things are to try and keep the rountine for the most part, but also have your DS used to being out and doing things. Sounds like you guys are already making a good start with that. I think the more exposure they have to being somewhere else when it is nap time, they get used to it.

I love Cole's page by the way. Lots of cute pics. He is adorable! (But of course, you already knew that!!) ;-)

Just know that Cole is so adorable that I just want to 'eat him up' and I am glad to be able to chat w/ you b/c I think we have a lot in common. Where do you live? I am in Arizona.
