Should crown be the cabinet color or trim color?

Our cabinets run to the ceiling, and our crown runs continously to finish off the top of the cabinets.

1. My architect says the crown should be painted a trim color (milky white).

2. The painter says the crown should match the rest of the cabinet. He thinks that painting it a trim color make it look like a white strip across my darker colored cabinets. (He painted the crown in the entire room the cabinet color).

3. My contractor thinks the crown on the cabinets should be the cabinet color; and the trim on the wall should be the trim color (eventhough they are connected).

What is the right answer???

To tell ya the truth, ask a couple experienced Interior-designers!!
* When painters & architects start sliding into the realm of decorating, it makes me nervous!
* One thing that drives me nuts is customers coming in, AFTER settling on a color-scheme with a decorator, and stating "Well, my painter thinks I should do this...".
* Dear God...then what did you hire the decorator for!!! Don't let a painter start another theme to confuse everything!
* It'd be like your auto-mechanic starting to appraise homes or something. A little knowledge is worse than none at all!!!
* Sooo, let each "discipline" do its OWN work. A Decorator's opinions would carry the most weight with ME anyway!
* I may at least try a closely-coordinating color on the crown. This may subtly highlight it, instead of making it "disappear". Only an idea though! Check with a Decorator!

What about having the crown match the cabinets and then just not having crown in the rest of the kitchen? We are used to seeing cabinets hung snug up to soffits or kitchens with ceilings that are high enough so that your cabinets are not running into the crown. That way your crown can run above the cabinets or separate from the cabinets and then it can match the trim like it is supposed to.

I think the window trim should match the other window and door trim, and baseboard, in the rest of the house. The cabinets are like furniture while the trims are the house.

I keep on looking at my ceilings and crown, and definitely can tell that the ceiling looks higher in the rooms where it is a different color from the crown molding than in the rooms that have ceiling and trim the same white color. Obviously makes sense since it looks like the ceiling starts lower, i.e. where the crown starts. Now, how would it look if I painted the crown molding the same color as my walls? It should make the ceiling appear higher. (However, my walls are darkish yellow). Crown Molding the same as ceiling Crown molding the same as wall Crown molding different from ceiling and wall

Absolutely not. You can do whatever you want. The only suggestion would be to match the style of the house. I.e. A super modern white kitchen in a homey cottage would be a bit jarring or if the rest of the house is oak and traditional.

Just to close out this thread for future reference - painted the crown white in all areas where it was not over the cabinets, and it looks a LOT better. Should have been done that way from the start. Left the crown over the cabinets (which is the same design, just different color) as white chocolate, which also looks right. The only tricky part in this was painting the crown where the two colors meet. I did a decent but not perfect job, I will probably go back over it with a fine paintbrush to get a perfect line.
