Hard-as-nails, dried-up wallpaper glue disaster

I think I've read every posting about wallpaper removal and subsequent painting and learned a lot (a special shout-out to "painterguy" and "faron79"!), but I've wasted so much precious time, I want to ask about my particular situation before going any further.

Just moving into new house. I pulled down the hideous wallpaper in the kitchen with no problem. But the paste was left behind and is. Not. Coming. OFF. I have used a bottle of Dif just in one section - and while some paste came off, not all of it, and it came off with some strenuous scraping. I keep gouging the drywall underneath! I'm starting to freak out. :(

Here's my plan, from reading other posts:

1. Dif as much off as possible. Wash, let dry (how long?)

2. Put coat of Gardz on. Let dry. (?)

3. Take drywall compound and smooth out the unholy mess I've made. Let dry. (?)

4. Prime, paint.

My fiance is mad that I started this mess, and now I've got to get it fixed before we move in - by the end of this month. AND we're painting in the rest of the house. Did I mention the flooring?

Any consoling, suggestions, affirmations would be greatly appreciated.
