Decorating gingerbread cookies.

What little touches do you add to differentiate between the boy and girl cookie?

Also, is it really necessary to use royal icing? Wouldn't a glaze give a smooth hard shine, just enough to last a few days in cool storage?

When I did boys and girls, the boys had short hair and the girls pig tails. The boys wore shorts and T-shirts and the girls had Peter Pan collars and pleated skirts.
I don't know what you mean by "glaze" so I can't comment, except to say just confectioner's sugar and water in my experience doesn't go really hard like royal icing does.

The important thing with royal icing is to make sure the bowl, utensils, decorating bags/tips, anything that touches the icing, is clean as a whistle - no fats. I reserve a set of tips specifically for royal icing (even though I *do* clean them after using buttercream LOL). If royal icing gets fat on it, it will break down into a watery mess. For accents use it stiff, but not so stiff that it's hard to squeeze out of the bag and curls when you try to leave a line. I don't know if you want to totally cover gingerbread with icing ("flood"), but this technique works well on sugar cookies. I used to make sugar cookies in a flower-shaped pan (actually for lollipops but my cookie pops always fall off the stick), flood them with a baby/sky blue icing, then take white icing (stiff) and draw lines like snowflakes. I really like this one. Crinkled Molasses Cookies 1 C. sugar Â¾ C. shortening Â¼ C. molasses 1 egg 2 C. flour 2 Â½ tsp. Soda* Â¼ tsp. Salt 1 tsp. Each cinnamon and ginger Â¼ tsp cloves Â¼ tsp. Cardamon, optional this sounds like a lot however I double checked with my niece who gave me the recipe and she said that is what the recipe she has said Cream the sugar and shortening till light and fluffy. Add molasses add egg beat well add rest of the ingredients I would sift them all together shape into 1 inch balls roll in sugar place on cookie sheet bake at 350 degree oven until lightly browned at edges I over cooked mine they should be softer..they tend to finish baking on the cookie sheet so take them out a little under done sheila

My boys and girls had different hair, the girls got a curly hairdo and the boys got no hair at all.

Of course, you could do pink and blue....

I frost mine with plain old decorator type buttercream icing because mine don't get "kept", they are strictly for eating. Colleen is right, though, it doesn't get as "hard" as royal icing, which is what I use for gingerbread houses.

Take some of the gingerbread dough and press it through your garlic press. Make it long enough to go around the top the "girl's" head -- viola - hair. You could then pipe a bow or add a candy on the hair for a barrette if you wanted to really decorate them.

I love gingerbread cookies, but I loathe decorating them. For some reason, I always feel obligated to make them all look different which is a decorating nightmare. I think I have the problem solved for this year though - I'm taking what I like to think of as the "Jackson Pollock" approach. Instead of boys and girls, I just cut out rounds and my plan is splatter them randomly with icing. Could get a bit messy, but should be quick!
