Income Tax question

Is there any way to change a 1040EZ after you've already received the refund? We did DD's taxes before ours and I guess she claimed herself... so now we can't claim her on ours. She is 19 and in college, she got back about $200. plus her stimulus that she didn't get last year. I think we'd do better with claiming her on ours like we've always done.

I think you can re-file anytime within three years. Call 1 800 829 1040 to speak with an IRS representative.

Thanks Jannie. I googled some more and see that she has to file another form (1040X) by mail to make the change and then DH and I have to mail in our form since the change won't take place electronically. Ugh.

The people who are really going to get shafted is anyone who made under the cap for the goodie bag in 2006 and don't qualify in 2008. They'll get the rebate and then owe it back. I'm hoping that they will base it on the 2007 AGI (because I went be to work Jan 2,2008). In other words, the government cuts the check based on the 2006 return but then will adjust on the 2007 return. Then if the taxpayer makes ovr ethe threshold in 2007, they will owe it back in 2008. AcK! If the plan is this confusing how can it be good or even reasonable?

sconti- There are many things you can factor in to minimize your capital gain on the house you sold if the profit exceeds the $500K exemption for a married couple. Start by taking a look at the IRS publication link below. Then, when you think you understand it, invest an hour with a CPA to make sure you've got everything you've entitled to. Available again this year (for 2010, not 2002, this time) ... limits about $25,000. single and $35,000. married. I was pleased with myself last year, in having arranged my affairs (via substantial charitable and some political contributions) ... ... to reduce my Federal tax load to zero. And the provincial liability was low, possibly nil, till I got down to the recently-initiated Health Levy and had to pay a few hundred for that. But I should not complain ... as I made substantial use of the healthcare services, for nil or minimal cost, during this past year. And I used to say that we should all be willing to pay a portion of the cost of running the country ... ... and then light fires under our legislators when we believed them to be running it/them improperly! " She has somewhat limited accounting skills and told me this year that the paper that I gave her last year detailing how to arrange the payments was too small, to which I said that I had meant it as a guide as she set up her account book. WAIT--before you do anything at all, PLEASE call your accountant and check the current laws. When they're in college, can't both the student and the parent could claim the student as a dependent on their taxes?

My dd is 27, so I'm talking about a few years ago, but I'm sure that was what our accountant did back then. I'm not a tax expert at all, just the former parent of a college student, and mind you--it's possible the law has changed over time--so you definitely want to check. But don't take a chance of shorting either yourself or her. Although, I'm sure the gov't would just love it if you gave them more money than they're entitled to--LOL!

Don't worry, Lydia. I'm not an accountant, either, but one prepares our taxes, and you are OK. My youngest graduated last year. She filed and got refunds, and we claimed her on our 1040, as we had done for the five kids who preceded her. College students rarely earn enough money to pay taxes.

As an aside, with all the frauds going on nowadays, the IRS chased my dtr for $26.12 from taxes she prepared herself and filed while a student three years earlier! She had cashed in some bonds her grandma bought her when she was a baby to help pay for college, and she didn't figure the interest correctly. That was the only year our acc't didn't file for us. It's good to know they're diligent ar IRS, right?
