Income Tax question

Is there any way to change a 1040EZ after you've already received the refund? We did DD's taxes before ours and I guess she claimed herself... so now we can't claim her on ours. She is 19 and in college, she got back about $200. plus her stimulus that she didn't get last year. I think we'd do better with claiming her on ours like we've always done.

I think you can re-file anytime within three years. Call 1 800 829 1040 to speak with an IRS representative.

Thanks Jannie. I googled some more and see that she has to file another form (1040X) by mail to make the change and then DH and I have to mail in our form since the change won't take place electronically. Ugh.

And don't forget that if your medical insurance premiums are paid out of PRE tax dollars, that they can NOT count towards the 7.5%. The easiest way around this is to use a flexible medical spending account if your employer offers it. All of the money that goes into it from your paycheck comes out pre-tax...that way you don't have to worry about meeting that 7.5% threshold, and you aren't limited to deducting just the amount that exceeds the 7.5%.

Of course common sense often depends heavily on knowledge, so if the knowledge isn't there, neither is the sense.

Like I said - rich folks. With only one kind of income. They own quite a few Canadian stocks. Suppose the stocks pay them an income of $46,000. Suppose, now that the prices of bank shares have gone down quite a lot recently, they have about $660,000. invested that are paying 7%, to produce $46,200. last year. [Caution: I would not want to see someone with a substantial amount invested have chosen to invest it all in one company - way too risky!] When the single person calculates his/her tax load ... it'll be zero. If the "taxpayer" has a low-income spouse with some tax credits to transfer ... or makes some political contributions ... or donates some to a registered charity (and the credit is at a high rate when one contributes over $200. per year) ... or pays upwards of 5% of net income in eligible medical/dental expenses ... the tax-free amount goes even higher. You may have heard me say in some of my posts that I don't like earning interest - the number of underlying invested dollars can't grow. And the only income that it produces ... is produced now ... and it's taxed now ... at top rate. If you have stocks of Canadian companies that pay dividends and have other kinds of income, the tax-free amount reduces rather rapidly ... but you'll pay tax on the dividend portion at a much lower rate than that on most other kinds of income. If this doesn't explain it adequately, ask and I'll try again. Perhaps if you check the link and read carefully, you'll find it explained a little differently and in a way that'll be clear to you, over there. ole joyful

WAIT--before you do anything at all, PLEASE call your accountant and check the current laws. When they're in college, can't both the student and the parent could claim the student as a dependent on their taxes?

My dd is 27, so I'm talking about a few years ago, but I'm sure that was what our accountant did back then. I'm not a tax expert at all, just the former parent of a college student, and mind you--it's possible the law has changed over time--so you definitely want to check. But don't take a chance of shorting either yourself or her. Although, I'm sure the gov't would just love it if you gave them more money than they're entitled to--LOL!

Don't worry, Lydia. I'm not an accountant, either, but one prepares our taxes, and you are OK. My youngest graduated last year. She filed and got refunds, and we claimed her on our 1040, as we had done for the five kids who preceded her. College students rarely earn enough money to pay taxes.

As an aside, with all the frauds going on nowadays, the IRS chased my dtr for $26.12 from taxes she prepared herself and filed while a student three years earlier! She had cashed in some bonds her grandma bought her when she was a baby to help pay for college, and she didn't figure the interest correctly. That was the only year our acc't didn't file for us. It's good to know they're diligent ar IRS, right?
