Tell Us About Your Rocking Chair

Those of you that have had babies or grandbabies, did you rock them in a squeaky rocking chair? I did and the chair was one that belonged to my husband's Grandpa. It was oak and in the Arts and Crafts style. It had a good squeak to it as you rocked. We still have it. We also have a large oak one in the Mission style that was his Aunt's. Tell me about your rocking chair.

We got a big wood rocking chair for a wedding present.
My Lab ate it! LOL yep, that's a lab. not
just chewing, but eating! lol No, didn't EVER
use it. never. It actually makes me sick.
I don't like rockers. I tried and tried to
find DH a recliner that didn't rock.. do you
know how hard that is? lol Nope.. didn't
rock ds either.
I would rock him back and forth in my arms
but NOT in a chair. I can't swing either! LOL
more than 2 or 3 times back and forth. blech! LOL

I have a rocking chair that my Sister In Law gave me when our first son was born. Every night for the first year and a half of his little life he and I would sit in that chair together and read a bed time story. With our second son, we shared many bedtime stories as well, though not quite as many since he wasn't one to sit and listen to a story.

I have no idea how she came to have the rocking chair. While it doesn't squeak, one of the rungs on the back is missing.

DH as asked me many times to toss it. I can't bring myself to do it because, if I look at it and squint real hard....I can see myself sitting in that chair with a Grandbaby!! :)

Our poolhouse specs: - approx. 14' x 12' - pirate themed - two electrical outlets for ceiling fan/light, satellite TV/music, small fridge, outdoor speakers, outdoor lights - window installed on rear wall (leftover from a new door remodel when we put a door in our spare room to have access to that side of our house from pool area) - recently added a dart board w/an old sailing ship on doors (great find from a garage sale last weekend--only $3 and hardly used...until now!) - plumbed on outside wall for outdoor shower (still to be built) - built last summer by DH & DS - took about 2-3 months and cost approx. $2000 - $2500 for materials (we had the 3" raised foundation and support braces installed, and DH ran 1" PVC piping underground out to pool house for electrical wiring when our pool decking was poured 3 summers ago) It's not the most beautiful poolhouse, but it suits us well and looks great in our yard. Here are some old photos from last summer. We've since added bamboo shades to the "windows" & "door" area, more pirate-themed decorations, hooks on one wall for hanging towels, pool goggles, different bar height chairs inside, etc. Good luck w/your pool house. I think everyone who's seen Jay's (mushcreek) powder room is jealous!! Haha! Or the rest of his house, for that matter. I think about that peninsula all the time. I have a tiny powder room, a wee bit smaller than Jay's, and I'm not too proud to admit I'm stealing a lot of his ideas, haha, including the plate rail and the barn door! bluesanne, SCORE on the claw foot tub! :-). I've found, in life, that persistence gets people farther than intelligence, looks, social standing, etc. Good on you!! :-) I too have "claw foot tub envy," haha! Funny thing is, from ages 1-13, I grew up in a house with a huge claw foot tub. That thing was so deep! I hated it, lol! I was embarrassed by it--oy, kids! All my friends had "normal" tubs AND showers. We didn't have a shower. LOL When I think of what that tub would sell for today... Bluesanne, wow, so fortunate you're still able to use the tub!!! :-) Bluesanne, how interesting! I've never heard of competitive horse carriage driving! That is fascinating! (Score on the cones, btw. I'm kind of addicted to the dollar store, lol.) My pastor is competitive in dressage, which I wasn't very familiar with. Everyone in our church knows not to try the church first if we want to talk to her, you just head out to the horse barn. (Although she's almost always reachable on her cell.) btw Bluesanne, you mentioned northwest--where are you? I'm in eastern Washington. Chris (Shades), I can't imagine anyone hating you! But sometimes friendships really grow from relationships that began with a misunderstanding. I'm so sorry that Joe can't get outside for a chat for more than a few moments. My claw foot envy is actually ridiculous considering I can't use a tub anymore due to the arthritis. But my daughter Joy loves them too. She takes a bath every night, almost never showers. So when I get to the bathroom remodel, I would like to put in a cool claw foot for her and a walk-in shower for moi. Being in a 37 yr old manufactured home, obviously I will have to reinforce the floor in there big time to support the weight of a claw foot. Steph, wow, how cool your ex happened to see that tub being removed from the building and got it for $50!! Jay, it's no secret I'm in love with your house!! Lol! I love, love, love all the antique and reclaimed materials you've used! I'm really going to try to use as many used, reclaimed, thrown away, donated, however you want to phrase it, materials for my house project. Not just to save money, which is definitely a big consideration, but because I think we throw so much good stuff into our landfills, and I want to do my part by not adding to the pile. You have shown that a variety of "finds" can go together in a house in a tasteful, nay stunning way! In fact, I'd go so far as to say, had you just bought brand new and prefabricated everything, your home would not have nearly the charm and beauty it has now. I know for a fact your house could be in a magazine spread, and I'll be first in line to buy that issue! Which brings me to...STRINGWEAVER!!! We've been missing you!! So so happy to "see" you! :-) And I agree 100% with you--one of the many advantages of a smaller home is that you can potentially put nicer, higher quality materials into it. Small is beautiful! :-) PLUS...less to clean! :-) Stringweaver, thanks for sharing your story about the hardiplank! Between your and Jay's hardiplank scores, I'm starting to think my dream of hardiplank siding might come true!! :-) Steph, how are you these (hot) days? And Jed? 1. A little 1BR brownstone overlooking the Mississippi River in St Paul -- my then-partner and I had to find a place quickly, so we didn't look at a lot of places; I stumbled upon it in a Craigslist ad. I toured the place on an autumn afternoon; it was filled with golden hour light and I instantly fell under its spell. The light was delicious and inviting. West-facing windows, with the river in view. Wood floors, kitchen built-ins. The kitchen sink was quite large but exceptionally splashy, somehow. There was zero counter space, but we opened up our dining room table (which squeezed into the kitchenette extension) and used that for prep. The whole place was maybe 650' square. 700?. The maintenance lady didn't know (she was the face of the landlord, who operates out of NY). The bedroom closet was atrociously small and awkward, but we had a big walk-in hall closet and basement storage. I loved the view and the light. One of the two cats lived almost permanently in a living room window. We had a pull-out couch in the living room for a young family member to visit, and it worked perfectly (though I later had a tough time getting rid of that couch--so heavy! It sadly ended up in a dumpster bc no one wanted to buy it and no places took those couches as donation). We even hosted a Christmas (desserts and apps only) that was amazingly fun (6 adults, 2 cats, and 1 doted-upon little boy)... It's still one of my favorite memories of adult holiday gatherings. Parking was terribly limited in the area. We ended up buying a parking spot on site for $70/month, Total rent... with parking was $925 or $950, i think. A lot for us at the time (just a couple years ago... 2013-ish). We were in our early 30s... two masters students scrounging a living and trying to put our lives together... and lived there about a year and a half. I enjoyed it! I loved that warm ombré rug! It was sold after I left the apartment after this. that radiator in the window had a marble(?) cover over it that created a great kitty window perch. Though the kitchen was tiny, I made some great meals (when there was time). to be continued with the next place...

At some point, my MIL decided to downsize and give away some furniture. She had two rockers. One was a black painted bentwood rocker, which she gave to her daughter. The other was a broken rocker chair that she gave to her son and me. I kept it in the garage for years, never used it and finally threw it away, which is what she should have done. When my kids were little, I'd feed and hold and play with them on my living room sofa. No rocker.

I rocked my baby until she was so big, she hung off my lap in all directions, but I don't have the rocking chair any more...I usually used the one was at my mother's, which was a platform rocker.

The only rocker I have now is a metal one. I need to bring it to the house and paint it. It is in a storage building.

I curb shopped my rocker. Pulled out the caning and added a hardware cloth basket. Painted it periwinkle and planted flowers in the basket. It sat on our front entrance until we sold the house. I think I gave it to a friend.

I have the rocking chair that my Mom rocked me in when I was a baby. It came from the John Wesley Hardin family, He was a famous outlaw from our area.
I rocked all 3 of my sons in that chair and absolutely love it!

My Mom had a stationary Rockin chair and I remember her holding me and rocking me.
Inow have 2 in the den 2 in my bedroom
-one for me and one for the cat
1 on the front porch and a double atationary that I wish
I'd had when my kids were youngs.
they could have stretched out with their head in my lap while we rocked .
It is really like small couch. I love my rockers some fit better than others the ones that really fit I call my sleeping chairs.

Not a rocker but I have a recliner that I bought in 1977. Over the years our cat scratched and destroyed the upholstery. We got it reupholstered in 1992 and it still looked good until recently when the Bichon puppy I had ripped the upholstery badly. The Bichon now belongs to another family. DS wants the chair because he remembers us always having it. He will get a slipcover for it.

My mother had a stationary platform rocker too. I bought a caned dark pine stained bentwood rocker for our first child. Then I added a maple blanket rocker for the 2nd. The ladderback is high with a slot for placing a small folded throw into it that will cushion the back. Our DD has that rocker now for her sons, and we have kept the caned rocker and have had it recaned, which was expensive but worth it for the memories this rocker holds.

My rocker I bought in 1977 from a place called antiques and Things.I redid it later.Its sitting here in my living room.It was real dark,I stripped it did it natural,just put clear finish.Its a warm brown with wood grain.

We have had recliners that rocked for years, a regular "2 x 4" type set of furniture that had a couch, chair and rocker, in the early 80's, and the maple rocker my parents bought us when I was pregnant with DD. I still have recliner rockers and the maple rocker. I have inherited a rocker from an aunt who got it from a great aunt. We don't know, and uncle (late husband to the aunt) didn't know, when they cleaned out great aunt's house, if it had belonged to our side of the family or great uncle's side. But it is a family piece and will be kept. No one is allowed to sit in it, as it isn't in very good shape, but still treasured. Even Damien isn't allowed to sit in it. It would probably hold him fine, but he wiggles too much!!!

DH and I were working for the same company when we were expecting our first. One day our boss asked if I had a rocking chair. I told her no, we had looked at them but couldn't afford one. A few days later another friend that worked with us stopped by our house. He was bringing us a rocking chair. It was from our boss. She had rocked her (grown) daughters in it but now had no room for it.
I always intended to give it back to her but the company was sold and we lost contact. I love this chair and have wonderful memories of rocking, and singing to, my babies. It is a great comfort to me to see it sitting over there. I still feel like I'm taking care of it for someone. It has to stay because it isn't mine to get rid of.

We also have a child's rocking chair that was my DHs grandfather's when he was a child. DD has one that had been in her DHs family for a few generations too.

I have my Grampa's rocker. Its wood is all I know about it. We had it refinished 10-15 years ago. I rocked all 3 of my babies in it and so far all 3 of my GB's too. I can sit and rock with a baby in my arms all day!

DD and DSIL have her Great Grampa's (DH's side) glider rocker. His DDIL had an auction a couple years ago and DD had to have it. I love it. It is old, how old I have no clue. I hope someday they will have babies to rock in it.

The rocking chair I got over 45 years ago before the birth of my first born child broke.
And so did my heart. It was not repairable.
I can remember the rocking chair my Mom had when I was a little kid....it squeaked and when she would stop rocking me after I fell asleep, I would wake up so she would rock me some more.

We received a bentwood rocker as a gift just prior to DD#1's birth.

DD#2 arrived 18 months later.

DD#3 arrived 17 month after that.

One time DW was sitting in the rocker with DD#3. The other two seeing this immediately climbed onto her lap also. I have a great picture around somewhere showing DW with the picture of exhaustion on her face, the baby half asleep, and bright smiles from DD#2 & 3 all on that rocker.

BTW today is our 27th anniversary. Got the card but still have to get a gift....
