What size chandelier?

I am trying to decide on a chandelier for over my dining table.

I have a small condo (1100 sf). My dining "space" is about 8'x9' right off the kitchen and somewhat of an open concept.

My dining table will be 48" round and can extend to 66".

The ceiling above the dining table is vaulted and at the point where the chandy will hang is about 8' 11" high.

I have read that your chandelier should be about one-half to three-quarters the width of your table. But then I've also read to add the length and width measurements of the room together, and the answer equals the right size diameter your chandelier should be. So in my case, for an 8' x 9' room, my chandelier should be 17" in diameter.

This is the one I am considering (see link), but don't know if it will be too big. According to the first "rule" it wouldn't, but based on the second, it would.

They also have a smaller version with only 8 lights (vs. 12).

What are your thoughts?

The 12-light chandelier will overwhelm the space, and I would recommend going with the 8 light version. Your table could handle the larger version, but width of the room is too small, and it would look out of proportion. Draw an elevation of your dining room, and you will be able to see this.

I'd vote for option 1 or 2, with at least 300 total combined wattage lights, and a dimmer switch so that you can adjust total light output based on the seated area. That's what I've done in a similar situation and it's worked well.

Thanks for the responses! I happen to love those shallow, rectangular kind of fixtures, cyn427 and olychic, and had actually already given the idea some thought (though not the 15K versions !) but H wants something more traditional. They are really gorgeous, though - maybe he'd still consider. Funny that you mention Schonbek, cyn427 - I happen to love some of their classic crystal chandeliers and was just looking through their catalog. lindac, I know they say to mount 30" from the top of the dining room table but I can easily see that seeming a bit low if you ever want a big centerpiece etc. How would you typically go about raising a chandelier? I guess what I'm *really* asking is how little hanging chain can you get away with on top?

What is the height the fixture will hang from? Is the ceiling angled to the center at 14-15' or to the kitchen at 14-15 feet so that they spot it hangs from may be no more than 12 feet? That makes a big difference. Yes, some large fixture at or near the width of the table are being shown, but do notice that they are hung higher over the table to compensate for headroom when standing at the table, sitting or standing (when many people will lean in a bit), much less setting the table, serving or placing things on the table. The most common DR table height is about 60" or 5 feet, maybe a few inches higher. That puts the bottom of the fixture at or near eye level for most folks. With a taller ceiling and a larger fixture, you may want to raise that by a foot, give or take depending on the fixture and ceiling height. If you go to 6 feet and te fixture is 5 feet, it will make a huge diffference whether it hands from 12 feet or 15 feet (one foot of chain or 4 feet of chain). I would probably stick to the single level, and if this is a spot that is still being built, I wouldn't buy the fixture until the walls and ceiling are in place and you can be sure of heights, widths, etc.

Eighteen inches of fixture will allow six plus inches of chain AND attachment......and nicely clear the entry door and trim. Hang center on door in most cases.

Patricia - Thanks for the link. I was wondering how the height factored in. This was helpful.

Lars - I was hoping the room could handle the larger one because it is so open and airy (the chandelier), but I think you're right. The 8-light was my original choice so I will stick with that. Thanks!

This may help. I have a 45" x 54" table (which extends to 45" x 94") and used a 6-light, airy chandelier that's only 23" in diameter.

Consider the height of the fixture too. The 12 light would hang with the top nearly 8 feet high.

And my ceilings are about 9-9.5'.

I have this Chandelier in my 2 story foyer and it fits the space well. I would go with the smaller version for over a table.
