Alternatives to Statins (please share??!!)

In recent threads, some of you shared supplements used for lowering cholesterol levels.

I am hoping those of you who have seen the success through blood tests, would share not only the supplements you use, but also the dosages and how (what times of day) you take them.

My dh needs something, but did not tolerate the statin.

Here is some info on Red Rice Yeast. I did take it for awhile with no side effects and my Cholesterol did go down. It's been several years though so I can't help with dosage.

They put me on Nicain, 500 mg 2 times a day (get flush free). Also Omega 3 (fish Oil 1200 mg) I take 3 a day or more if needed. You can get them in the "burp free" I get them at walmart. They have no taste. I could not take lipitor

I really think you need to first of all consider the growing conditions for your roses and whether those conditions are optimal, and secondly, whether the roses you have been selecting are highly disease-resistant or not. I don't know Belle Storey, but Molineux will sometimes have some minor BS problems--though generally I find it quite resistant to disease. Were those roses planted in 6 or more hours of direct sunshine a day? If they got less than that, the lack of sufficient sun will bring about BS problems. If you have a cottage garden, did you leave open space around those roses? If not, that is another reason why the roses might be having BS problems. Were they in your garden for at least 3 years? If not, that is another reason why those roses may have been having problems. Austins and many other roses often take at least several years to settle in and get a really good root system going. Until that happens, they can be less vigorous and more susceptible to various problems. Ask yourself the same questions about the 3 remaining Austins you have. And are they disease-resistant Austins? If you have not selected Austin's roses advertised as disease-resistant (actually, he tends to label them in reverse, as "healthy" and "very healthy" -- even "exceptionally healthy"), that is your first problem that needs to be addressed. I really think that what you are really looking for is disease-resistant roses for a no-spray garden. You should list that up front as the most important criteria. If you use the search box to look up "disease-resistant," you will find all sorts of recommendations on this forum. In my garden, these are some of my disease-resistant roses. Austins: Mayflower (pink, fragrant, highly disease-resistant); Queen of Sweden (light apricot peachy pink, disease-resistant--don't remember fragrance); Jubilee Celebration (salmon pink with touch of yellow at base, disease-resistant--don't remember fragrance); Mortimer Sackler (light to medium pink, disease-resistant--don't remember fragrance). Other disease-resistant Austins I remember off the top of my head from their catalog are Lady of Shalott, Princess Alexandria of Kent, Susan Williams-Ellis, The Pilgrim. There are others also. I remember these because I was closely considering them. For disease resistance, there are also the rugosas. I've grown Blanc Double de Coubert (did I spell that right?) and Fru Dagmar Halstrup--both very nice. I can't make a final judgment yet, but my new Bourbon Mystic Beauty (from Roses Unlimited) and its twin or maybe identical rose Souvenir de la Malmaison is wonderful and has (so far) had no disease problems. If you want to go more modern, here are some disease resistant ones I grow: Elina, Eutin, Our Lady of Guadalupe, Well Being, Earth Song. Then there are also the Knock Out type roses, plus a relative named Home Run. They are all highly disease-resistant, and while I have a couple of them, can't say that I highly recommend them due to lack of bloom beauty. I hope some of that is helpful. Good luck in your search--but remember that there is no such thing as a disease-free rose--just some roses that are more resistant than others to disease. Kate

mtnrdredux I am so sorry to hear that you are going through something similar - we were in the exact same position, but it looks like the response letter from the attorney we were forced to hire has had the desired affect and he is now gone (with lots of our money but I digress). What we discovered is that justice is for those with lots of money. We were advied that we would almost certainly win if he had sued us, but that fighting him would have cost upward of $30,000 which we may or may not have ever got back depending on the state of his assets (or lack thereof). If we had the money to spare we would have fought him through the courts and counter sued so he would have a judgement on file just on the principle of the thing, but really the advise of the attorney's was to get rid of him even if it meant paying him off. Absolutley sickening. I believe in Karma too - and also in the word of mouth. Word is spreading around our community for sure... and we haven't had to tell anyone! I went to a neighbors house in tears after the last meeting with him and another neighbor came to the door and saw me upset. I guess they asked what happened because the next thing I know several other neighbors were asking if we were ok. Really our new neigborhood is phenomenal. The neighbors have been so, so wonderful since we moved here and have made us so welcome, it's the only thing which has kept us from just wanting out of this house and away from the whole nightmare. I do hope GC gets his just desserts and I really think he will. Inspection is tomorrow morning. Please let it all go ok!!!!

I think alternating with another variety is a great idea. I love White Eden but having something else that will give you blooms as well through the fall would be nice. You could either go with another climber or a shrub rose to fill the space between your White Edens. White is so neutral you could go with anything really. I loved it when Red Eden was grown next to White Eden (different rose completely, not a sport of Eden) but Red Eden balled frequently. Florentina is nice. I was tempted to purchase the new Lady in Red rose from Weeks to put next to it.

You can tell, Sue. I'm jealous of people who see lines that way. Not to go on and on, but look at the nose, too. A lot of people will make a circle for a nose (these are people whose drawing remains rooted in their Snowman Period). Some of us , who think we are fancy, will use the "less than sign" to suggest a nose. I don't even know how to describe his squiggle, but it's unique, and yet it DEF says "nose."

I am another who cannot take statins. My doctor recommended triple strength fish oil capsules and I take two a day, with a meal. I buy mine from Vitamin World. Blood test results improved within one month.

my suggestion is to try different statins and perhaps
differnt dosages. I could not tolerate them (various brands)for many
years and finally my heart doctor put me on a lower dose and now everyting is OK. Be sure your DH gets CQ10, because
satins deplete body of necessary elements.

My cholesterol dropped 40 points when I added salmon, oatmeal and walnuts to my daily diet. I don't remember if it improved my triglycerides, HDL, LDL though.

Forty points wasn't enough, so my doctor put me on lovastatin and I haven't had any problems with that at all.

Red rice yeast is what my dr. recommended for me after trying several statins and none of them tolerated well. I take one 600 mg. capsule twice a day - morning and evening. My levels have been good for the past few years.

Please watch out for Q-10. I almost ended up in the hospital twice due to extemely severe nose bleeds because of the high blood pressure meds at that time. It is a blood thinner.

Better check the side effects of the Red Yeast Rice before you try it. I was going to buy it but reconsidered,

Statins have loads of side effects as well. The link below talks about side effects plus questions if our cholesterol levels need to be lowered to begin with.

I'm hoping that you are going to consult a physician on this. What works for one person may not work for another, and in fact, some of these things can cause new problems while not helping with the cholesterol levels.

I am on Zetia which is not a statin and works in the digestive tract. My last blood tests were good. I could not take the statins either.

kudzu, thank you for the reminder! Yes, we are working with the doctor on this. She is all for him trying alternative things. I wanted to get some input on what worked for others, as a guideline to go by. And not just of 'suggested doses on bottles'. I like the personal 'reviews'!

joann, thank you for the info! I had already read that. Of course, what works for one, doesn't work for all, as clearly seen with the statin debate alone!

Now I will run it by the doctor!

But lurkers who may be reading this should remember, though we should take control of our own health, we need back up from a doctor!! Its a team effort for our health!

Hellion, I never heard of Zetia. Will check that out!

joann_fla, you mentioned Niacin, 500 mg 2 times a day and said (get flush free). I had asked my doctor about taking Niacin and she said that it can cause hot flashes. Is 'flush free' related to that? I also found that, when I increased my fish oil from 2 to 4 per day (on the recommendation of my Diabetic Clinic Nurse Practitioner) that my cholesterol levels dropped by about 10, taking me from borderline high to a more acceptable level.

The flush free will not give you the hot flashes. I was taking the regular one for a few days and got so hot I felt like my skin was on fire, it scared me! So if it ws the niaicn reg, I will not take it again.

My Cardiologist told me to take 4,000 mg of fish oil and
a Red Yeast Rice tablet once a day....but I have not had it checked since beginning this...anxious to do so. I also could not take statins...made my muscles ache so badly that I could hardly walk~
If taking this much fish oil makes you "burp", freeze it before taking...it will melt in your stomach instead.

Harry takes fish oil, CoQ10, niacin and a statin. He had such a hard time with the statin he stopped taking it. We talked to his cardiologist and he was taking it at the wrong time. (Would've been nice if they'd put it on the bottle!!)

Statins should be taken at NIGHT. Worked well for Harry. Plus if you are experiencing weakness, muscle soreness, etc. tell your doctor so he can adjust your dosage. I really dislike a lot of meds, but now they've found statins can maybe (big maybe?) prevent a heart attack.

My husband is heart patient and the cholesterol med were causing him to have a sciatic problem. He is now taking natural med and doing fine. Blood pressure and Cholesterol. If you are interested in the names and where I purchase... I will be happy to share. Just email me.
