Baby Monitors

This is a poll about the monitors, I don't have one yet and just want to see what is working for everybody else.

What kind of baby monitor do you have?

Is your baby upstairs from your room or on same floor?

How well does yours work?

If it has any features like lights or music, how often do you use those and do they seem to work?

If you can talk to the baby from your monitor, do you and does that seem to be a good feature?

Don't know the name but it's your basic plug in with battery option. Very staticy on battery.

Also have the camera that transmits to a small TV type thing monitor. It's cool. Gives audio with bar and a very clear picture even in dark.

We have the Fisher Price 900 mhz model. It has lights and sounds, can be used on battery power or electricity, it can clip to your waistband for portability when used on battery power, and does not have a long antenna that can get in the way. It does not have the feature where you can talk to the child.

It works very well. Our DD's room is across the hall from ours, so we don't need it at night. We use it when she is napping, or asleep for the night and we are either on the main floor or basement where we would not be able to hear her. I have also used it to go outside and get the mail, pull in the garbage cans, etc., when she is napping.

Mimi, that was also one of my biggest fears: Mom falling and us not hearing her! I had a large school-bell beside her bed that, if she needed me, she could ring or shove onto the floor: there's no way to ignore that sound! We also tried an intercom, but she never did get the knack of buzzing us even when she was lucid, so a baby monitor is the way to go. The one thing I'm concerned about are the bed rails. Statistically, our elderly are more severly injured by trying to climb over bed rails when they need to get out of bed than just slipping onto the floor from bed. That's why they're not used in many nursing homes. There are rails that attach to the bed and are only a foot or more wide to give them something to grasp onto when getting into and out of bed, and that may help...Does your Mom have wall-to-wall carpeting in her room? If not, maybe a very large, stable one could be used to cushion a slip out of bed? Also, do you know why she fell? Was she trying to get out, or did she just turn over and fall? Perhaps pillows, or a large body-pillow tucked under her blankets along the edge could help re-direct her turning over? She may not be getting up in the middle of the night yet, but there will come a time, and rails scare me.... Anyway...I'm glad to hear she only broke a nail! Good grief. I hope you find a solution for her...maybe putting her bed against a wall, or positioning a dresser beside her bed? Good luck, I've been there, and I know how frightening it all can be! Thank heavens she's loving her new home and is vitually THRIVING in it! She's so happy and always has something new to tell us about! What a miracle! But what a decision to have had to make! Answering Machine in two rooms?

Thank you for responding, Don. We purchased an expandable set of phones with answering machine base. It includes a baby monitor so I can set it so I can hear the room, but it may not be necessesary because we put the answering machine in the kitchen where I might be able to here it from my office. Thanks again. I hadn't thought of the code rings though my husband and I used to use them years ago before he retired! Peggy

Even our lawyer IS concerned about their death and infirmity contingency. In all his years as an estate and realty lawyer, he said he has NEVER seen that kind of contingency. Especially their infirmity contingency. He wanted it defined. It was defined by their lawyer mostly as a loss of the ability to make a decision. So NO, I am not heartless when I pray for them to live and be healthy up until our closing. I only wish them to last until I sell them my home.... I wish to close without having to worry about putting my home back on the market once again!! I don't think I could bear going back on the market again if anything happened to this sale. These people may be paying cash for the sale of our home, but they only put down 1k as a good faith gesture to purchase. Paying cash for full amount.. with only 1K in cash as a deposit could mean they could walk at any time until closing! They would not be out much if they did so. However, I doubt that they will do that, but you never know. Still I will not really RELAX until we officially close a month from now. Rental agreement is now in place, they didn't budge much on their rental price but we don't want to rock the sale of our house at this point. They only made the offer to buy because they knew we could rent the house back to them. So they will be making a nice profit on us from renting it back to us for 3 months. And we are alright with that... considering we actually were better about giving them a good price for our home.. we didn't dicker as much as we could have. In the meantime, our house inspection turned up with no major problems (which I assumed would happen- but who knows if there is anything lurking beneath the surface) although we are still being tested for radon... which who knows what that will be??? Never had one in all the almost 30 years we have been here. Hopefully, we will pass that. The building inspector will be picking up the containers on Monday at noon and said he will be able to get the results before the time expires for us to go under full contract.

Just like Karla, we also have the Fisher Price "Sound and Lights" monitor. This monitor happened to be a high recommendation by the Baby Bargains book.

Our DS's room is on the second floor, and it works great. You don't even have to set the volume very high and it picks up everything. I can even hear DS sucking on his pacifier, if I set it loud enough.

We have the same one!! We love it!! Currently one piece is upstairs by the babies bed and the other downstairs, though she cries sooo loud we don't even need one!
As soon as we move her into her own room we'll put one near our crib and the other by our bed (same floor) so I'll know when she gets up in the middle of the nite.

I totally recommend it!

We have the Safety 1st Lights and Sounds one. It works great, and it was fairly inexpensive. (I think we picked it up at WalMart for cheap) Anyway, the biggest reason we got it was because it had two receivers. We had a 2 level house when DD was born and it was a godsend - we had one in our bedroom and one downstairs in the living room...didn't have to keep moving it all the time!!! Good Luck with finding a good one for you!

We have the Safety 1st Angel Care monitor. We like it because it has a pad that goes underneath the mattress that acts like a SIDS monitor; if baby stops breathing for 20 seconds-- it starts beeping and you know to go and check. It is very sensitive-- kiddo will be WAY out-- but it still knows he's there. Probably not a really necessary thing-- but definitely gave us more peace of mind (especially once kiddo started rolling over and sleeping on his stomach!). Anyway-- the sound quality is ok and the receiver can work on either electricity or a battery. Also-- it has a low -medium- high volume level. Our bedrooms are on the same floor-- but still works well when we take the receiver downstairs. It doesn't have the talk back feature. I wouldn't mind if the receiver was a little more compact and could be clipped to a belt. We got ours on e-bay for like $35 shipping and all-- but have seen them go a little cheaper. They were clearing them out at Target for around $45 last year; they were selling for $90-$100 at ToysRUs last time I looked (last May).
