Frustrations! I finished painting my beautiful entrance and dinning room, after i touched up where it needed in the paint i noticed spots that did NOT match the color of the wall... what happened here, will this happen everytime i touch up the wall? Could it be that i saved the brush in the fridge (that is a trick i learned somewhere) and where i touched up the paint had separated? i never had this problem with flat paint and it is the first time i am using satin paint. So what causes this blotches and will i have to repaint the entire wall again :(

Thanks in advance for any info that might help my dilema... OH BTW- the color is Satin by dutchboy- and it is brown like a big milky chocolate bar.

Touching up with a brush where a roller was used will always cause a problem.

Dark colors are very, very difficult to touch up with any tool. It's best to mix the paint well, pour a tablespoon in a cup, dilute with a tablespoon of water and touch up with a foam brush, dabbing the paint on, not brushing it on.

Michael i am even more depressed now... wish i had read what you wrote before trying to touch up once again. I figured why dont i start with a fresh brush... so i went to work the problem is that the spots are now LARGER and even more noticeble are darker... do you have email i would like to send you a picture... i will try to dilute now and dab on... that will be my last try before actually painting the entire ROOM again...

I dunno, Joe. I tend to think that her's are producing because they are stressed as described above, but that is just a guess from what I have read. I can certainly understand the frustration, but you have some tomato cages to let them grow in and perhaps you will need all the support you can get to handle yours when they load up. A number of things can affect those things, sun might be one of the most obvious if yours are shaded or something. If you have not fertilized, just used compost, I surely would not think that they have enough nitrogen to cause a problem. In my garden, I laid the compost and composted horse manure on heavy. Some plants are loaded and some do not yet have a tomato set on the vines. Even some of the same variety are not consistent, and that puzzles me. One of those new Burpee's Porterhouse looks like and has . Another Portherhouse looks like and only has a couple of small tomatoes on the vine. The seed were started on the same day, and treatment has been about equal, other than the bigger one is in a container of compost and composted horse manure and gets more sun, while the other is in the ground and gets more shade. Hi Gloria, I know that any hosta is different from ANY other...even if they belong to the same family or variety. Most of us are laymen (laywomen) and therefore are not expert in the field...and I dont ask where that hosta came from when I purchased it. Over the years, I limited myself to purchase from reliable growers and hosta suppliers...the Solbergs, Zilis, Van Wade, Tony Avent, or similar...I do not buy fom eBay because hostas are cheaper...very risky IMHO. I once bought Striptease...without the fine white line...and a few year after, it reverted back to Hyacinthina. And so, the fun continues....with some challenging hostas, sometimes.... We both need good luck with our Guardian Angel. If and when nothing works, I intend to simply purchase a new one. Papou

Made another batch today....dismal failure. Again. Here is the recipe I tried: Pecan Supremes Mrs. Fields Cookie Book 2 c AP flour 1 tsp soda 1/4 tsp salt 3/4 c quick oats 3/4 c dark brown sugar (packed) 3/4 c white sugar 1 c salted butter, softened 2 large eggs 2 tsp vanilla 1 c chopped pecans 1 c semisweet chocolate morsels Preheat oven to 300F, In a medium bowl combine flour, soda, salt & oats, mix well with whisk and set aside. In large bowl, blend sugars with electric mixer at medium speed, Add butter and mix to form a grainy paste. Scrape down sides of bowl, then add eggs and vanilla. Beat at medium speed until fully combined. Add the flour mixture, pecans and chocolate chips, blend at low speed until combined. Do not overmix. Drop by rounded tablespoons onto ungreased baking sheets. bake 18-20 minutes. Immediately transfr cookies with a spatula to a cool, flat surface. I experimented a bit. Made 6 cookies on an airbake sheet and 6 cookies on a heavy aluminum sheet. No difference...I ended up with a big, run\-together blob of thin cookie. Chilled the rest of the dough for 6 hours. Baked a dozen cookies. No difference...I ended up with a big, run\-together blob of thin cookie. Each time I let them cool a bit on the sheets and I practically needed a jack hammer to remove the. it was a mess. I was going to take a picture, but found my camera battery is dead. Let me just echo what melsouth said above. I was quoted an upcharge by one cabinet maker for painted white, but in our current new house the price was the same for stained or painted white from a different cabinetmaker. Perhaps you can get an estimate from another shop. It also bothers me that your cabinet maker is trying to discourage you from using white since he prefers stained. He should NOT be doing that. In a previous home, I let myself be pressured to do some things by the cabinet maker and always regretted those choices since I really preferred other things, but felt I had to go with his recommendations. As others have said, you're stronger than you even realize after sustaining the loss of your husband. It's natural to struggle with decisions following that...and sometimes I've found just getting a bit older can make decision making (particularly so many at the same time) more likely to be overwhelming. Just take them one at a time, and it will get done. My sincere sympathy over your loss, and I hope you'll still find the joy in each new day you have. Regarding appliances--if YOU like white cabinets and choose that, you can go with either white or stainless. With cherry, IMHO stainless would look best. We went with stainless in this house with white cabinets because I didn't care for the appearance of big white refrigerators. But we chose the stainless look frig that doesn't show fingerprints. I've found that the stainless undermount sink I thought I'd hate, is actually less work than my previous white one. As with so many things, in the long run, it will work out. Just take it one step at a time. Keep us posted. You have so many friends here ready to help you.

Do you think if i purchase a fresh quart of the paint and try that it would work>? my can is almost all gone- well i have maybe 1/3 left in the can

It could be that Dutch Boy doesn't touch up well either. Some paints just don't touch up. Instead of trying to simulate the stipple effect that a roller makes by dabbing paint on, you should just use a roller. Using the same tool as what you originally applied the paint with gives your paint the best chance to blend in. Use the same nap size as what you painted the room with. You can get roller sleeves in 4" size so you don't have to use the 9" ones.

its not even that roller effect- its completely color change! NOT GOOD- i have spots tht are darker and doesnt match the original paint. Did you get my picture?

Could it be that the color was not mixed well so you have a different color on the bottom of the can than you do on the top of the can?

Hi Cele!
The touchups appear darker because you've got another "layer" of paint in random areas now.
* These areas will reflect light differently than the rest of the wall because a different tool was used; and, again, because there's a different thickness.
* Satins obviously reflect more light than Flats.
* Michael's tips should help.
* Don't completely rule out doing a light vertical "sweep" of the walls though...;(

I usually try to avoid touch ups for this reason, but I recently painted a bahroom using a dark brown Ben Moore Aura paint. They advertize Aura as allowing seamless touch ups and so far it is working great - I had to touch up a few spots after the vanity top was installed and you can't tell at all - and I know where to look. It is expensive paint but I would reccomend it if you anticipate having to do a lot of touchups in a particular room.
