Paint cure time before showering?

Bathroom will be painted on Monday (primer for new drywall/ceilings then painted with 2 coats of Dunn Edwards eggshell finish paint). Doors and mdf trim to be primed and painted with two coats as well. How long does the paint take to cure? We don't want to ruin the paint by using the bathroom too soon.

Ask your painter or read the directions on the paint can to be sure, but my thought is that if your bathroom is well ventilated and you towel off excess water in the shower as soon as you finish, you could use the shower 24 hours or so after the painting was done (assuming the paint is water based and not oil based). I have done so with no problems.

If you live in a high humidity climate and don't use AC, then probably best to wait a couple of days.

All water based paints will take up to two weeks to reach a full cure. So, the longer you wait, the better off you'll be. I always tell my clients to wait at least 3 days. Longer if its really humid. Anything less will lead to future problems.

At least 72 hours, however you do not need to press the tape down tight. I always recommend using the tape as a ledge over the trim instead of adhering it. Lay the tape on the top edge of the baseboard or other trim and lightly tap it in place in a few spots. That will shield it from spatters above. Michael

Thank you everyone! And gray, thank you. Actually, I was going to wait to take a picture of the new wall color but as I was sitting on the sofa I noticed that the red bucket with gary and white mop picked up the colors of the art piece. And so I went to get my camera. Jusr when I was ready to take the picture my black and white Border Collie laid down at his gray silver bowl to eat. And so now, the black was repeated and ancored at the mid bottom as well as at the mid top. (God always creates such perfect scenes for us to capture.) It was only after I loaded the picture up on photobucket that I realized that even the curve of the cord (which will be covered) was repeated in the curve of the alignment of the art, bucket and dog. Wow! How cool is that! Thanks again. Oh, well. Glad you told me about not putting up the art right away. Paint seems to dry here pretty quickly since I am in the desert. I ended up adding a small amount of Taupe to my EK Adobe gallon of paint for the accent walls(s). For some reason - the Adobe was reading a bit green next to the Taupe which of course has more red in it. So now the new improved Adobe color is very, very nice with the Taupe on the main walls.

It isn't the sheetrock that suffers, but the drywall mud. Probably one shower won't hurt it, but a few too many, particularly really hot and steamy ones, will cause the drywall mud to bulge out and begin to drip mud stalactites from your ceiling. Yes, this happened to us because I wanted to make sure the leak in a ceiling pipe was really, truly fixed before we painted yet again (leaks the first two times we painted got me a little paranoid). Drywall mud is very, very water soluble. Are you talking two different types of paint? I think of Zinsser as a sealer/primer paint. Benjamin Moore is an excellent, top quality paint, but particularly if you are using semi-gloss, you'll get a better finish if you use a good primer first.

@stillpitpat Wet sanding is after your clear coat is done and dry, you take sandpaper made to work while wet, get it wet, and sand the clear coat to a glass smooth factory looking finish, then finish up with a polishing compound. We are talking incredibly fine grit here like, you start with 1000 grit, then go to 2000 grit to finish, then a polishing compound. It is how a high end paint job ends up looking like a mirror. You certainly don't HAVE to do that though, it doesn't do anything other than improve looks, it does not make the finish any tougher, and it looks like you got nice results without it.

If the painter applies all three coats the same workday, you are definitely headed for trouble. Let the primer dry fully. Let the first coat dry fully. Let the final coat dry a day before showering.
Each successive coat will entrap any offgassing and moisture still present in the previous coats, this rushing things along is the cause of many paint failures, by blistering and peeling; then the victims ask "wahappen?" on this board.

I just wanted to chime in for anyone reading this upon google searching like I was - I showered the day after the primer and two costs were applied and it completely ruined the wall. Painters had to come back and repaint all over again. The picture shows how it looked DRY 4 days later and why they had to come back. The painters didn't know how long I was supposed to wait so this time I'll take @randita's advice and use the other bathroom for as close to at least a week as I can.
