I would put the couch on the wall where the deer head is (deerhead gets moved). Then put the two chairs across from the couch close to form a seating arrangement for conversation. Take the little table that is next to the couch now and put it between the chairs.

It looks like the ceiling slopes right? I would put the deer head high on the wall where the mirror is now. That wall is higher right? I would put the round table under it with a couple of accessories and the plant in the corner.

I would put the sofa table that is behind the couch now on the wall with the cowboy pic. Pic may have to be moved to balance the look.

It kind of hard to tell the dimensions of the room without all four walls being photographed.

I would use a gold color for the walls to warm up the room and blend in the furniture and wall accessories.

Your couch and new drapes are beautiful! With the hunter motif you have going I don't think a braided rug would be appropriate. I would opt for a beautiful Oriental rug which has the colors of the couch and tapestry chairs in it and perhaps quite a bit of dark blue which will go with the tapestry chairs and ground the room (assuming you like dark blue). For the coffee table something that has glass and wood might be nice so that the room doesn't feel to heavy and has a bit of sparkle. Lamps and side tables would be a good idea and with that couch I would go for straight lines, but not ultra modern. A lot depends on what you love and when you buy furniture you shouldn't settle for anything less. Adequate lighting is very important in a room, and even the most beautiful room will look drab without it at night. It will also lift your spirits.

Make sure the rug is large enough to give the room impact. A too-small rug always looks skimpy, and with the trophies on the wall you need something strong and dark to balance them on the floor. I'm sure you'll receive lots of good advice and end up with a great room.

If you were in Oklahoma (I don't know where you are) I would suggest you visit "Where the Buffalo Roam" in Pawnee, because they are gifted at putting this look together in a happy way. In short, don't think you are limited to earth tones. Look at an issue of "Cowboys and Indians" magazine. I would also suggest you visit the Phillips hunting lodge at Woolaroc near Bartlesville where the Hunting lodge look mingles elegantly with Oklahoma Art Deco, and the Pawnee Bill mansion also at Pawnee where Hunting Lodge/Buffalo Ranch mingles with the Golden Age.
If you take a cue from Navajo design, you can also introduce silver and jewel tones.
That red sofa could look amazing with a Pendelton "Eye Dazzler".

I used SW Nomadic Desert for the wall we hung the deerheads on, it looks great.The color compliments the deer hides. Everyone who comes in loves the color and wants to know what it is so they can use it with their mounts.

Another affordable deco idea with candles. If you know someone who has barb wire fences, talk them out of a strand or two and wrap them around a couple of fat candles two different heights. You start from the bottom and wind it upwards about 1/3 of the way, or however you like it. If you don't know anyone, but drive by an area with the barb wire fence, just stop and ask the people if they have some left over peices, I know they will be willing to help you out. We're all nice that way!

I'll take some better pictures of the shape and size of the room. There are vaulted ceilings, the wall with the heads continues onto the kitchen. The wall the mirror is on, is a half wall height wise and width wise (the other side is the kitchen).

We are in Idaho, and have a few Pendleton blankets. In fact, we visit the Pendleton mill at least a couple times a year. The one you linked is really pretty.

I like the suggestion of glass topped coffee table and a traditional rug. We have more artwork we can hang. I've been contemplating painting, thank you for the color suggestion. It would be a big undertaking since the rooms are open to one another, I'll see if I can talk dh into it. ;)

I think that your choice of red is gorgeous and that your room is beautiful as is your furniture, buy you do need to get some color on those walls. I think it really depends on what you like and the amount of natural light that you get, but the white or offwhite color there is a bit harsh. I totally love the fabric on your occasional chairs.As far as the oriental rug, it would tie in your colors if you went with the red one, but make sure it doesn't clash with your drapes or your chairs, esp the floral fabric on the chairs. Myself I don't think a large oval braided rug would be out of the question at all, esp if it had the right colors in it, as it would lean more toward the rustic that you seem to love..Redo the lamp, if nothing more, wrap the based of it with something or sit it down in something more your style, as it is a bit too contemporary, maybe a wooden box base could hide the metal..or wrapped in leather or fabric. The oak tables are nice and honestly I like the two chairs and the table by the windows if they are USED there..I think another set of chairs if they are affordable would make a nice seating aream as you can only really seat 2 comfortably with the sofa, the chairs are not "comfort loungy type"..and a couple nice chairs added to your grouping would really set it off nicely. I also think some type of casegoods would be helpful for storage and to add bulk to the room, maybe some bookcases or chests of drawers.Your art and mirror and animal pieces are just floating, they really don't make up a grouping of any kind..I would find a bookcase or table and put it in a convenient area, it should be as wide as one of your pieces of art or mirror, and you can put that piece on the wall above it, and use a nice grouping around it..Say if you use the horses, you might group some horse related items on the top of the casegoods.
One of your other pieces can be centered behind your sofa when you decide where you want it..about 8 to 10 " above the back of the sofa, above the head of the tallest person sitting down. you need a little more fabric in the rooom to soften it, my suggestion is you choose a good color to go with your red, say green or gold, for your secondary color in your rug or walls and then incorporate that into your pillows and throws. There is gold in the cowboy picture, but basically you have 3 themes going in this room, i think it would be best to choose one to go with the room and keep it consistant, and because your husband likes the hunting theme, a suggestion would be to go that direction and keep with it..put the cowboy picture in another room, and find some deer pictures, or bear, maybe posters that could be refitted into the frames..or just remove the pictures and stick with the heads and the mirror, using them to organize the hunting theme around.

if you choose to go hunting you can use other hunting type things as your touches in the room, like the old time hunter red buffalo check pillows or throws, those would be so cool in there, with some hunting gear related accessories, and maybe a photograph of your husband with his trophy buck.

If you choose to go cowboy, then use some cowhides and leather, maybe some rope as tiebacks and some old time cowboy memorabilia around the room, even some antiques as the cowboy theme tends to lean toward the earlier centuries.

maybe oil lamps, decorative or electrified, maybe a gun rack for the guns if they are not loaded and up high, or a locked gun safe for hunting or cowboys..The lion just doesn't fit the cowboy look though.

your furniture is a mix of traditional..which does tend to lean itself more toward the old saloons and victorian cowboy times, rather than the hunting or adiron. theme..so if it was me being your designer, i would bring in some antiques, dressers, bookshelves, secretary desks or something, some lamps that look old, or real ones, some old books, you have lace, maybe some lace on top of a dresser with an oil lamp on it, and the mirror behind to reflect it, the smaller horns on either side of the mirror and maybe the big horns above to make a grouping..the coyboy picture behind the red sofa, the table and chairs left in a grouping, a new chair on either end of the sofa, away from a wall, find some unique things to use as end tables and coffee tables, maybe an old trunk, a wooden box with glass on top, a stack of old books, go ahead and use either the oriental rug (if it is a good color match) or the braided rug, some old time tapestry pillows, or old velvets, brocades, that might be found in an old inn (or whorehouse above the saloon) ..just watch some old movies or westerns and look at the surroundings to get more ideas..

I hope you can run over to Target and try to find their "Twisted wood table" that is on clearance from their Design Event. Very rustic sidetable, taller than most and a killer look. Round top with many twisted tree limbs forming the legs. I got one for me and one for my sister and we both love them. They are clearing them out for $45 and worth much more than that. Sorry it is no longer on their website, but you can probably find in store. Around here, the Targets have the Design Event in a separate space in the store, not with the usual furniture. All on clearance.

I found some other cowboy art we had stashed, some has a wood grain frame, and a couple have black. Oh, also some horseshoe coat and hat hangers.

So, you don't think keeping the heads and moving toward cowboy/victorian/historic would work (incorportaing the two)? I have an oval black framed mirror in the family room, I could move the craftsman/mission style one?

Oh, we do have some color on the wall - Martha Stewart Potting Shed Green ala Lowe's. It's a gray medium/deep tone green. It must not have come across on the photos.

I love the look you are going towards. That is sort of the look I'm working on as well (cowboy/victorian). I'm not good at making suggestions, but I will second what bettycbowen said about the 'Cowboy and Indian' magazine. I usually can't afford the stuff they advertise, but they have great ideas! I'll be watching this post for ideas, too.

I love rustic/lodge looks. I think the curtains were a perfect pick. I would change the wall color to something dark and rich, paint the trim a darker color (black or brown), get a rich Persian rug.

I actually bought the drapes in Linen, and don't care for them at all. I like the red much better. I will have to take them back and see if I can get them in red, and at the sale price I received.

I think you can definitely do the hunter/cowboy/victorian/cabin thing. I'd love to see your Pendleton blanket hung on the wall or draped over the chairs. Maybe try it on the table also. Or maybe a big lace tablecloth would bulk up that table. You can find some good Pendleton remnants on ebay to use as table runners, throws, etc. I've also seen some steals on vintage camp blankets on ebay that could be great in there.

Do you have anything you could drape on those chairs? They are throwing me off. Like maybe some vintage fabric or sheepskins or something? I'm just thinking that bulking them up would help, and the fabric seems too contemporary but maybe it works in real life.

I think the antique stores are going to be your best friends for vintage lamps and other touches like trunks, vintage suitcases, and vintage tables etc. Unless you are looking at the high end antiques, the prices should be really a bargain for the stuff from the 30s and 40s.

ps. I forgot to say that around here, there are tons of buffets, sideboards, from the 20s and 30s on Craigslist. Usually they can be found for a couple hundred bucks. Also lots of vintage rocking chairs here on Craigslist, often with leather upholstery. And cheap. I love vintage furnishings, but also love the prices!

Dh and I discovered yesterday we feel two living rooms on the same floor seems redundant. Our dining space is small, so we're considering turning the front room into an actual dining room. When we entertain, we like to play cards, and our dining area right now is very tight and cramped. We're still not completely sold on the idea, but it seems like we'd use the space a lot more as a dining space instead of formal living.

My only suggestion is to straighten out your couch cushion, LOL!

now that you have included more photos i agree that you need to draw the red in from the rest of the house, otherwise it is going to look empty, and not cohesive, i myself love the red print in the chairs..but think that the drapery red is a good idea..you can see the green now in your photos and it is fine, a great compliment to the red.
as far as making it a dining room, that works but maybe you should consider it a library/game/sitting room..you already have the great bay window with the table, make it a larger game table if you feel you need a larger one, i would put some bookcases on the other walls and then if you don't want a lot of seating, just cozy a reading area up with a lamp and a side table and either the sofa or a reading chair..and make it that wonderful look of the old wild wild west..which i said above is always victorian if you go inside those buildings with your eyes when you are watching the westerns, rather than just paying attention to the action, watch the decor, and you'll see that that is a great way to lean..and a great place for your cowby go come after a long day on the range to sit and read a book or play some poker.

We just built a room with the "rustic/old world/farm".... basically whatever the heck we like, lol, and IMO, putting a braided rug down with color will be the one thing that pulls the room together as "rustic."

I'm not a photoshop guru, is there a way to take that rug and photoshop it into one of my photos to get an idea of what a braided rug would look like?

We've asked some friends and family their opinion and they suggested a game/sitting room as well, not a dining room. We do entertain a lot, and a game table would allow for that, thank you for the suggestion. I love sideboards, and if I could find one on CL that is rustic/antiquey enough, we could keep glasses, beverages, games, etc in it.

I rearranged things a bit, and hung some more art. I still need to have dh hang the kids' coat/backpack hanger though. I'll post pics in a bit.
