I don't like to as I have lost many books that way over the years. People that I think would return my book... either lose it or give it away to someone else!

I recently lent a book to a friend and told her when I got that one back, I'd lend her another. I did get the first back (after about 6 months) and took her the other. Last time I asked about it... she changed the subject. I've got a bad feeling.

No, and especially books. Even though we have bookplates in our books with our name on them, people have sworn up and down that our book was "their" book until I showed them the bookplate.
We no longer are a lending library (nor a bank!).

Yes, although I don't really have CDs or DVDs to lend out. It's books. Often I don't want it back - I try to keep the number of books around to a minimum unless it's one I really like and know I'll read again. If I do want it back, I tell the person I want it back and they do return it.

Also, I have on occasion written my last name on the side of the book in marker. What I mean is, with the book closed, I put my name on the pages side or on the top side so it's visible. Of course that's only with paperbacks and/or books that don't have any value.

In general, I loan and don't have any trouble getting things back, or I just tell the person I don't want it back.

I lend out books and the paperbacks do not have to be returned...they can be passed along. I do feel your pain though because I once lent a whole stack of Southern Livings to a neighbor because she was having out of town guests and wanted to search for some recipes. Now, these were older magazines completely in tact and I told her I wanted them back obviously I save them for the recipes. When I got them back, they all had recipes cut out of them. I was not a happy camper!

I've said "Never again" to lending. Just one bad experience after another. The most common excuse for not returning books is that the person lent it to someone else and try to make I for getting it back from someone whom I do not know hardly at all.

And of course...never lend money.

Sometimes I do - depends on who is asking.

It depends on the person and/or the item. If it's something I wouldn't want lost/damaged/destroyed, answer is a firm no. Also, I rarely ask to borrow from anyone! I do have a church hymnal here that belongs to my youngest DD. I just don't want the responsibility of having others property in my care.

Yes, Molly.....a big thanks to you for pointing me in the direction of Amazon.com. I did order It's Entertainment and it should arrive today. I did see it on PBS Sunday night, and it was wonderful, but there is more of the show plus some interviews on the DVD. I plan on ordering their first show. Wasn't that called Going Home? Thanks gain for letting me know that I could order this show. As it shows, I'm very technology challenged and so behind times. It really irritated me when I got the tape back from that gal who taped over the beginning of a play I was in, but thankfully, the play came back on just before my entrance. Thats the important part!!! LOL Dottie

I rarely lend media out anymore, and then only to very selected people.

I take good care of my books, magazines, DVDs, tapes, etc. I keep the DVDs/tapes in their original boxes or jewelcases. I wipe them before and after use. I don't dog-ear books or magazines. I wash my hands before I read them. I had expected other people took similar care of these pricey items.

From my experiences, once I lend a DVD out, it's forever removed from it's case; it's used as a coaster; it's "lost" in a toy box; it's mixed in with 1,000 other DVDs stuck in a box or bag...

I've gotten some great excuses when I've finally broken down and asked for a DVD to be returned. "Johnny must have taken it outside to play with it," "I think it fell behind the washer in the laundry room," "I don't think I borrowed that one." etc.

I don't understand.

If I happen to borrow a book or movie, I keep it on top of my tall bookcase, the one by the front door. I take it out of the case; I put the case back on top of the bookcase; I watch the movie; I return it to it's case.

It can't get broken; it can't get spilled on; it can't get lost. The dogs can't reach it. When I leave the house, I know just where it is so it can be returned.

Easy as pie.

I have a nice collection of BBC comedy videos, entire series of several wonderful programs. I can think of only three or four people I'd lend them to.

90% of the time, nope. There are other places that lend (either for a charge or for free) books, CDs, DVDs--they're called Blockbuster, Hollywood Video, Netflix, Redbox and your local library.

I think some people are just too cheap to pony up their own money!

You have to build real trust with someone else before you can count on that person having respect for your property and your feelings. Funny, but I'd trust a certain neighbor before I'd trust one of my sisters!

Yes I do. They often disappear if I don't keep track of who it went to, but that's ok, it's just stuff. Only once in awhile I annoyed, but mostly at myself, because I never keep track of who I gave something to. Of course, it's their responsibility to return it, but I understand that life gets busy and people forget. I've done it myself, especially with books.

I am a musician and have a huge library of church music. People think nothing of asking to "borrow" my books....mostly because they don't want to purchase their own. After losing a couple of books, I have resorted to answering "give me the title of the one song that you need and I will copy it for you". I have a license to copy and I never charge. I also haven't lost any more books ;^)

Books - No problem. With very few exceptions, I'm not the kind to want to read a book twice. Once I'm done with it, I don't care where it ends up. Except for my cookbooks, and those I don't lend. I'll copy or scan something for a pal, but those books don't leave the house.

And I don't feel the need to own movies on DVD, so there isn't anything there to lend.

There are so many books to read and movies to watch that I don't have any interest in keeping ones I'm done with.

Music is different. Those I keep. But I've never had anyone ask to borrow those CDs.

Years ago, we learned the hard way, not to loan items or money to friends or relatives. Once we loaned a "friend" $50.00 and finally almost a year later we got it back, bit by bit, but he could go out and buy cigs and beer without a problem. We lost that friendship, if we really ever had it. Recently one of our relatives (not our kids) asked us for a very large amount for taxes or something and after talking about it for day or so, we said no. She was not happy, but myteriously found some money or records or something, but would not tell us. Sorry about that!
We don't loan CD's or books either. My Dad was always being asked to loan tools but on his garden tools, he mixed up a certain color of blue and painted the handles that color so if he did loan them out, that would remind the people of who they belonged to. He is gone now, but we still have his tools.

I learned the hard way. Very hard in a way. I had taped virtually all of Justin Wilson's cooking shows and had my little library. Loaned them to a friend (to copy and return) and of course never got them back and then they claimed they never borrowed them. They quit airing those shows around here and they haven't been on since. It just bugs me every time I think of it. I learned so much from those shows and enjoyed them. And of course now I'm sure they're too embarrassed to return them even if they found them. So ever since, I'll usually offer to make a copy if they bring me a tape or a disk but that's it. And never loan software either. I'll use my disks to reinstall theirs, using their ID keys but no to borrowing. Too many disks have come back damaged. There again I learned to have masters and make working copies, even at the store.

Same with tools. Cars. Etc, etc, etc.

BTW, I watched Celtic Thunder and it was a good show. Although I enjoy their music so it's hard to not enjoy it. And that Damian McGinty's voice just gets better and better as he gets older.

Speaking of which, did anyone notice the misstep by McGinty? During one of the last songs he started down the steps and Paul Byrom grabbed him by the shoulder and pulled him back up! Oops! I got kick out of it.

Not so much with DVD's or things like that. But I let a casual friend ( I mean someone I was NOT good friends with) borrow 2 pattern books that had these denim wagon wheel rugs in them.....She'd seen my wagon wheel rugs in front of my door thought they were so neat. (I bought the rugs and then later found books on how to make them.)

I never got my books back and it still burns my butt!!!!!!
I always put an address label inside my books. I know and they know who they belong to then.

The first and last tape I lent was one the editor of the paper I worked for had made at my wedding reception. I thought I was safe lending it to one of my bridesmaids. Not. She lost it. Even worse, she acted as though she'd lost a cheap paperback. Yes, I have the professional photographer's work, but that amateur tape was dear to me.

Monica has the right idea. Make a copy and GIVE it AWAY. That never occurred to me at the time.

the biggest thing I get asked to borrow is my truck. Now mind you it is a 1989...but it has been fully restored inside and out and looks brand new.
It is my baby.
I am the only one that drives it.
So the answer is no...her hauling/moving days are over.

I don't really have that many requests to borrow much else. Maybe the mower or some other tool by family or neighbor...I usually pick it up within the week.

I do, but I only lend things I don't care about having returned. Once I have read a book or watched a movie, I will generally not watch it or read it again.

Suzieque, that was about 25 years ago. I still have the magazines and I still get annoyed when I look through them and see the clipped recipes. I guess I should throw the magazines away and move on. For those of you wondering why I don't just clip out the recipes and toss the magazines because I would probably never find what I was looking for again. the older Southern Livings were so much better than the ones today! One of these days I'm going to start decluttering it's getting close to that time where I can't put it off anymore!

No! I have huge collections of DVD's and a friend of ours asked if she could come over and borrow some of our DVD's and I told her sure. She came and got them, watched them and returned them so it wasn't a big deal. The next weekend rolled around and the same thing so we let her borrow again. This went on for a while and then she took them for longer and once returned two movies and the case had been destroyed. Then about 11:00 one night her and her son came over and pounded on our door. My DH got up to see what was going on and they had come over to borrow some movies. DH being the gentleman that he is told them this isn't Blockbuster and shut the door in their face.
Needless to say we don't lend out our things anymore.

We had a neighbor one time ask if he could borrow our brand new horse trailer and DH told him no that we don't lend things like that out. The next weekend we went out of town and my FIL called DH and asked if it was alright if our neighbor could take the horse trailer and DH told his dad that he had already told him no. My FIL told my DH that he better go up and stop him then because he was hooking up to it. He had waited until we left town to go over and hook it up to take it when my FIL stopped him! The nerve of some people is just amazing!

Not any more. Still waiting for someone to replace a baking pan that she knew I wasn't fussy about lending out. I had to ask her today if she needs help finding it. Feel like asking for the damaged one back and making her still get a new one.

Seems like I never learn my lesson. Now I'm vexed again about it, lol.

I would probably loan more stuff out if asked, but I'm going to attach something to items like the library does- with something for them to sign, so I can prove later they borrowed it. I'm still looking for a Cirque tape, dangit. Got it back once after being gone for a couple of years and now it's gone, again! And our housesitter borrowed a movie we hadn't even watched yet and lent it to her mother and she had to make a special trip out here to return it after I had to ask for it back. I thought that was almost as nervy as eating a whole gallon of our blueberries.

I don't loan out or borrow DVDs, but I do loan out my books. I always get them back, even the ones I do not want back!

I do not like to keep a lot of paperback books around, so I always tell people to find someone else to pass it one to.

NO, NO, AND NO, had to learn to hard way not to loan out power tools. We are older and when a younger couple moved in our neighborhood, they had lived there about 2 years and really nice folks. Came over one night and wanted to borrow one of our tools, brought it back in the next week and didn't say anything about any problems. In the next month, he came over to borrow another power tool, and brought it back in about three weeks. I am the one that uses these tools with all my crafts and my junking. Started to use the first tool and it kept cutting off, could not use it, have never had one minutes trouble with this tool, so I got to thinking I better check the other tool he borrowed. Same thing, both tools would not work. So I decided to call and see if had any problems using them, First thing he said was no, they were working perfect when I returned them. They were still in the box I purchased them in, so I took them back to the store to have them checked. They checked them and said the motor in both tools needed to be replaced. So I took it as a lesson learned, never loan out my tools again. These folks moved about 3 years later , and right before they moved, called me one day and knew that we have a full basement and wanted to bring just a few things over while they were showing their house. Knew that was not going to be a good idea, so I just told them I really didn't have the room. Another neighbor was caught off guard, and agreed to let them use the room. When they moved, left all the things with the neighbor and it was items that could not be left on the street for pick up. Tires, car parts, oil , they kept calling the folks to please come get the items. After they realized they were not coming to get the items. Had to pay to have someone come and take all the items away. Think we all learned a lesson from this family.

I do. I haven't lost movies, but have lost a few books over the years. I don't care. In all cases the friendship was more valuable than the book.

Once, though, I lent used kids clothing to someone. These were clothes I was still saving for my youngest, but my kids are spaced so that none of them wore a size 4T at the time. I told her I wanted them back if they were still in good shape. When I asked about getting them back several months later, she informed me she sold them in a consignment sale! OMG! I would have been less irritated if she gave them away, especially to a good cause. But she SOLD them and POCKETED the $$! The nerve! In that case, the friendship was not worth it!

I have put a lot of money into books for my classroom with the intention to lend them to students. And fully aware that when lending anything to a 13 y/o there is a good chance I won't get it back... at least in once piece.

I find that no one remembers that they borrowed from you or they get ruined and they never replace it with same item you lent them or pay for it.

I found I had to put name and address stickers on books that I lent out but that still didn't always work.

I feel those items are ones that if you lend them out, expect not to recieve them back or have ruined and not paid for or replaced.

Also because its not theirs, they don't take care of it.

Look at the library DVD's. It seemed for awhile I would put DVD's on hold and get them and go to look at them and find they were scratched and couldn't watch the rest of it.

It really frustrated me alot. YOU see tons of finger prints on them.

Kids are just as bad as adults, doesn't matter what age they don't really care alot of people.

And some go, oh, I can just buy new ones and they do.

But we all can't afford to rebuy all the time.

Just wondering about Fireman'swife -- I think I might have reported my horse trailer stolen....
We have borrowed extension ladders from next door neightbors... but always took them back... Did ask them if they'd like to move with us so we could still have the ladders next door to us -- they declined to move -- but we're still friends...

I don't watch many movies, so don't have a dvd collection. Books, why in the world wouldn't you lend them out? Unless they are special to you, pass 'em on instead of having them collect dust! :)

Juellie, do you ever watch the same movie twice, when you see it in the library or on the video store shelves or on TV? If so, why? Because it's a movie you really like--you know how it ends already, you probably even have some of the lines of dialogue memorized, but you watch it again every so often because you love the movie.

Some readers are like that, too.
(It also helps "wash out the memory" of the last book read when it was absolutely horrid! LOL!)

Other books I pass them on to the library for their shelves (if they need them) or their book sales (the library mostly puts donations there).

Nope. I lent/loaned a book I really likeed to my husband's sister. When I asked her if she liked it, she denied ever having the book. So I bought myself another copy. I will not ever lend a book or movie to anyone, except if I want to give it to them to keep.
