My sister uses only her cell phone and I've actually thought about eliminating my landline..just haven't took the plunge yet!

We got my MIL a Net10 phone a couple of years ago. She's 85yrs. old now and if she leaves the house, she almost always has it with her. She still has her landline and pays an extra $20+ a month for unlimited "long distance". She has over 3000 minutes built up on the cell phone..and 150 mins. are added once a month automatically (I pay that). I've tried talking her into at least having the unlimited long distance taken off her home phone and using the cell phone for long distance. But she hasn't done that yet! lol

I'm 67 and gave up my land line when I retired. But, I'm not a "phone" person. I don't spend hours on the phone talking to friends and relatives. A phone is a tool to me not a convenience. I would have eliminated the land line a long time ago had it not been needed for dial up internet access. It so happens wireless became available about the same time I retired so it was the perfect time to eliminate a $35.00 monthly bill for something I didn't use. It's true that over time I may have the same problem your mother has but until then I can save all that money to use for other things.

I haven't had a land line since my move to Iowa over 4 years ago. It started out that I knew I was going to be in an apartment the first couple of months, so I decided to just use my cell during that time. Then when I bought my house, I saw no need for a land line. I love to call friends and relatives across the U.S. and talk for an hour and my cell provides me with all the minutes to do that. On the rare occasions a telemarketer calls, I tell them this is a cell line and to never call back. I get free incoming calls with my plan.

My sister has thought of doing this. I have a question though, if she does this and I call her on my regular phone, won't I have to pay long distance charges? On her regular phone, it's just a local call.

I know that many have given up land lines in favor of exclusive cell phone use. I just want to say that there is little that is more irritating that trying to carry on a conversation with someone whose cell phone keeps cutting in and out or their speech is difficult to understand...like they are talking too close to the mouth piece. Is it because it's a cheap/poor quality phone? I don't know, but if possible, please call me on a real connected to the wall phone and I will give you the same consideration.

We've gotten rid of our regular land line and are now using a free line (long distance is free too). It works really well. We've had no problems at all with sound quality or downtimes. We have call display and voicemail with it, too. I like free!

As for cell phones, Claude and I have both just switched to a new wireless company that offers an excellent basic $15/month plan that serves our purposes. With it we each get 100 local minutes, 50 text messages, unlimited calling to each other and anyone else who uses the same company, and call display.

I know. I often screen my calls with my answering machine and if the cell phone is cutting in and out, or staticy, or garbled, I don't bother with picking it up. I figure they can 'try' to leave a message if anything is important, or just call back when they are someplace with a better signal.

I'll keep my land line...good quality, and when the power was out last year, I was glad to be able to pick up and check up on and visit loved ones...so long as they had a landline, or a 'charged' cell.

We don't have a landline,just cell phones.I have Virgin mobile.$49.95 a month,unlimited calling day or night and no long distance fees,no contract,very good connection quality and service just about everywhere.You can pay your bill online or on your phone with a credit or debit card or with a top up card.Love it!! For $10.00 more a month I can get unlimited testing but I rarely text so haven't done that.Before this I had AT&T and my bills just kept getting higher and higher.There was always some kind of charges tacked on even though I had unlimited calling/long distance and texting with it.I was tired of paying out the kazoo for phone service so I changed to Virgin Mobile.They have phones in every price range and every extra one would want.And no,I'm not working for them but I do recommend them if anyone wants a good cellphone carrier.
Gadgets-If you get a plan that includes long distance there would be no extra charges.If your area code is the same as hers there wouldn't be a charge anyway.

We got rid of the landline about 6 years ago, and have never regretted it! We live outside the metro area. For calls to 'the city' we either had to pay a long distance charge, or a $25 month metro charge.

We haven't had landline for over two years. It works for us.

Blaming the cell phone for cutting in and out and being garbled and calling it "cheap" is like blaming the waitress when the bottom of your eggs are burnt while your toast is ice cold. Blame the cause, not the messenger. The delays, "garbled" etc are from the cell service and seldom the phone. My cheap little LG Tracfone runs a circle around most contract phones when compared. I'll also have service when a good bunch of them don't. So stop screaming at the Girl Scouts when they come to the door because your lemon creams were recalled. It's not their fault either.

And FWIW, the cost of my landline, DSL line and cell costs combined are less than the cost of just the cell phone for a lot of people I know so many who drop the landline to "save money" are often frittering money away anyhow. There's something about cell phones. People feel they have to spend big bucks to impress people. I just don't understand that.

I'd say bye-bye to the land line but...it's AT&T and it's my broadband internet service. I don't think I can have just the internet portion. Maybe? I'm paying $56/mo. for phone and internet.

My cell is part of our DS's cell system w/free calls between family.

I will NEVER get rid of my land line.We have the LL,cordless phones and a cell.We only use the cell when we go out.I use the cordless phone most of the time in the house(Yes i know it's part of the land line)but we've had a few occassions when the power goes out and the cordless doesn't work,and the cell we have is one of the "pay as you go" types.The majority of my family is 3000 miles away,and we talk on the phone all the time.

Our power went out for 3 hours saturday during our big rain storm,and my sisters were without power some for 2 days,and one cousin still doesn't have any,and probably won't until sometime tomorrow.So if they didn't have LL,what would they have done?? The batteries in the cell probably wear down,and the only other place to plug them in would be the car,which they would have to shovel out first in some cases.

So thanks but no thanks,i'll keep my LL,which also has unlimited calling 24/7,and it's part of our pkg with our provider,and is actually cheaper than when i use to have to pay separate for the LL many years ago.Our bundle is 132.00 a month which i don't think is bad at all for internet,phone,and t.v.JMO

We ended our land line service last summer. So far haven't missed it at all.

If I were to take out landline ...

... the only way that I could "talk" to you folks on the computer - would be to travel to the library and use the one here. And that gets expensive, except when I can combine the trip with other errands, without too much extra travel.

If you have a cell, do you have a holster and carry it with you all of the time? Or, do you have an extra that you always leave near the floor at home, so that, should you break a leg ... and fall (or the reverse) and are lying on the floor ... can you crawl to grab that near-the-floor cell phone to summon help?

If you are using cordless landline at home, do you always have one of the cordless units near the floor, close to the areas where you mostly operate?

If a non-cordless landline, do you have at least one unit on a moveable base, on a coffee table, etc., so that, should you be confined to the floor, you can pull its cord and get it down to your level?

In such a situation ... a landline phone on the wall might about as well be on another planet.

To answer your question, Ole Joyful. I have a holder, for my cell phone, that is like a small purse that goes over my shoulder around my neck. I wear a phone wherever I go. I have both cordless and corded phones in my home. There are times if I have to take Izzi out at night, I will take my cell phone with me. So I have a phone with me all the time.

OJ, 99% of the calls I make and receive are on my cell phone, although we still have the land line for DH's business. I carry my phone with me in one of three ways, depending on how I'm dressed. I have a small case that clips over the waistband of some of my pants. For pants that don't have a firm band, I have crocheted a small case and attached hooks to it and eyes to my pants to clip it on. But most often, I just slip it into my, ahem, brassiere.

I cancelled my landline about 7 years ago. I've never missed it.

Speaking of which, lots of people don't have traditional landlines these days, anyhow, because they're using VoiP phone lines from their internet companies. (I use that for my business, though I've thought about moving to just a cell phone. We'll see.)

No way I'd ever be without a land line (with a cord--won't have a cordless).

In case of an extended power outtage, one is not going to be able to charge a cell phone, nor use a cordless phone. Can't tell you how many times a day my husband turns off someone's electric, and they complain that he 'shut off their phone'--because they have a cordless.

More importantly, does anyone remember back to 9-11? It was next to impossible to use cell phones at all that day. I was trying to call my husband and daughter to check on them, and it was virtually impossible to get through to them because the airways were too clogged with calls. And when do you truly need a phone the MOST but during a widespread emergency? There have been other times of more local emergencies, when you couldn't get cell calls to go through, as well.

In my world, cell phones have their place, but can never take the place of a corded land line.

No, I don't think I'd cancel my LL... I use it all the time. I actually don't own a cell phone. My boss got an extra line and a free phone for me to use. he was worried about anything going wrong with the van. DS is on the same cell company and I can call him out in Ohio for free with the cell phone. I don't pay the bill so I don't use it for much. one of my brothers has the same company and he will call me on the cell phone to talk sometimes. We have a cordless and an OLD PRINCESS phone! lol that one is plugged in to our bedroom. It sure came in handy when the power was out last time. It's only $23 a month... WAY cheaper than the $59 or $50 plan of DS's that is REALLY over $70 after all the taxes, fees etc.
