Opening up a load bearing wall

I've been reading about steel beams vs. engineered beams vs. support columns, in Fishies' post.

My question is...I have a 10' x 16' porch that I'd like to incorporate into my kitchen/eating area. The opening would be on the 16' side...and I'm wondering how much side wall you normally need, with a steel beam vs. an engineered beam. I don't want to do a structural support column, as I'm hoping to open the space as much as possible.

I'd just like to see what other people have done and get an idea of how much space is needed, for the side supports. Obviously, we'll talk to a professional before starting ANY work, but just trying to be a little more informed, before we have that conversation :)
