Personally, I'd use up what's in the tank, then refill it with the correct gas required. This way, you can observe your car's performance with the right gas (not a mixture) in the tank vs. the wrong. Just a way to (hopefully) confirm that the newly found problems are/were gas related. Good luck.

Before making any decision, I'd have a talk with my mechanic (or the dealership, if your car is still under warrantee.)

And if your problems truly are the result of the wrong gas, but you asked for the RIGHT gas at the last fill-up, I'd then be talking to my attorney--you could have serious mechanical problems down the road, depending upon what you mean by 'the wrong gas'. Never hurts to make sure you have your ducks in a row.

Under the heading of wrong gas the options at the pump are wrong octane rating or getting diesel fuel instead of gas.

If you got diesel fuel the engine would run about 4 to 5 minutes emiting a cloud of smoke like a military smoke screen machine.

If you got the wrong octane rating it is not a big deal. Vehicles perform best at the octane rating that they were initially tuned up & set up for. If you happen to get the wrong octane rating it may cause the engine to run a bit rough because the engines computer is looking for the other octane rating, but it will not cause any serious engine damage. I would add the correct octane rating now, which would dilute the other gas closer to what the engines computer is set up for.

I was thinking the same as Lazypup. A lower or higher octane than is recommended won't hurt the car. You might hear a bit of a rattle in the engine, or a pinging, but it won't hurt anything.

My Stepfather WAS a huge believer in premium gas, even though his car recommended regular. It ran great for years, but the catalytic converter had to be replaced. We have to have our emission tests on our cars every 2 years, and they found this at one of his tests. He is anal about his car (and his home). Had he known it would have hurt it, he would never had used it. He just thought if regular was good, premium was better.

My friend recommends that I tell you that it helps if one eats beans fairly frequently ... he claims that it adds a couple of miles to the gallon to one's gas mileage ...

... but I say that one needs to open the back door or the hatch to obtain the benefit.

Either you got gasoline or you didn't.
You may have gotten the wrong grade (octane rating),
but you still got gasoline. Unless you got diesel fuel. :o)
If you got gasoline with a lower octane rating than your
engine needs, just go to the auto parts store and get a bottle
of octane booster and pour in the tank.
If your car requires midgrade gasoline and you put regular in
it by mistake, then go fill it with premium gasoline. It will
mix with the gasoline that is already there and bring the
octane rating up a little. A bottle of octane booster mite
be the less expensive way to go.
I'd do as Lazypup said and just fill it up with the correct
grade of gasoline and drive it. May take a couple of fill
ups but eventually it will be back to its usual self.

First off, tell us what was the "wrong" gasoline, and what is the ecommended "right" fuel. We are making wild guesses here not knowing the facts.

If you got a load of E15 (15% ethanol) and your vehicle was not certified for this amount of ethanol, by all means get that diluted with the right stuff as soon as you can. Start refilling your tank when it is 3/4 full and keep adding new fuel until at least the euivalnet of 2 tankfuls have been added. After that, return to your regular refill interval. If you have an older car and you got as much as 3/4 tank of E15, its best to get that pumped out and replaced. It does not have to be competely removed; removing until there is 1/8 tank left should be sufficienta and then refill with the right stuff. A garage may be able to bleed off fuel from the fuel log and thereby eliminate the need for dis-assembly of the fuel tank.

The hazard of too much alcohol in the fuel is this: Alcohol causes elastomers to swell and soften. Special materials resistant to alcohols are used in fuel systems certified for high alcohol content. Parts subject to alcohol damage are hoses, seals, float assembly, fuel pump, fuel injectors, and maybe fuel pressure sensor.

Addition of alcohol to gasoline lowers fuel mileage because the energy content of alcohol is less than gasoline. If your car got 22 miles per gallon on straight gasoline, a mix with 10% alcohol may lower the mileage by 1 to 2 miles per gallon. By the way, most gasoline available in the US has alcohol these days. Straight gasoline is rare.

Now, if you mean the wrong octane was out in, this may have little to no effect. If your engine can use 87 octane and a higher grade was put in, there will be no effect. Contine to refill using your regular refill interval.

If your engine requires a mid-grade or premium and the lower, 87 octane was put in, you may experience engine knock. If the knock sensor is working, it will retard ignition to stop knocking when detected. This is a temporary change. The ignition timing will be advanced toward standard setting unless knocking is encountered. Knocking will occur again under increased engine load and the process of retarding ignition and then restoring the setting begins anew. In this case, it is best to get the octane increased as soon as possible. As a poster above mentioned, a quick fix is to add an octane booster to the tank. However, do read the label. DO NOT put in a booster that is not safe for the catalytic converter. If the label does not specifically state the product is safe for catalytic converters, leave it on the shelf.

So, what to do if you got a load of low octane fuel and you needed premium grade and you will not be adding an octane booster: While using up the initial bad fill, avoid hard accelerations. Don't get into any "drag races". Begin refilling the tank when 1/4 tank has been used (3/4 full). After 4 such refills, the low octane fuel should be diluted enough for you to return to your regular refill interval.

The problems you had could well be coincidental too. Again, no idea what those problems are, so no way to intelligently comment.

It's like calling the doctor and saying "My friend doesn't feel well. What's wrong?"

I will say this much, I doubt you have anything major to worry about.

When the guy's doc asked him some questions, the guy just said that he'd come to the doc to find out what was wrong.

The doc suggested that he visit the vet - s/he being the only medical person who can diagnose without questioning the client.
