Lessons Learned (A Picture Post)

Post a picture that has a lesson. Doesn't have to be a serious lesson, just a lesson to learn.

Here is mine:

ALWAYS WEAR YOUR SEATBELT

This was my brother's car after it was cut in half by a train in the late 80's. The picture shows it at the junk yard, but after the crash 1/2 was on the right side of the tracks and the other half was on the left with my DB still strapped into his seat with his feet on the grass... gas pedal and steering wheel yards away on the other side of the train. He walked away with a concussion and some bruises.

I guess this picture could have another lesson - 'always watch out for trains'. He's one lucky guy.

Sometimes there are crossings without lights. Such as the one where my DD was hit and drug 50 feet. It was a switching track, night time, no lights, and none on the flatbed railroad car either. And no crossing attendent. Thank God she walked away with just stiffness.

That really is a great idea. I have a small book with lined paper that I keep with me where I take notes and jot down measurements, ideas, phone numbers etc. I wish I'd kept track of more info in there. I also have a really cool tote that hold hanging file folders. I keep regular file folders in the hanging files that are labled, "flooring", "appliances", "plumbing", "lighting", etc. I keep selections, samples, invoices, notes and other details in those folders. The tote also has a tape measure, flashlight, zipper pouch with pens, pencils, sharpies, and scissors. There's a pocket where I put business cards I'm given by subs and vendors. It's really been a great help to just pick that up in the morning and know I have what I need. Oh, I also have a set of plans in the tote, too. Thanks for the great idea arlosmom - even though we are three weeks away, I'm going to start to get more detailed in my journal!

I've been doing something similar and it's already helped me twice... (1) our contractor put up our ceiling w/o replacing the insulation on the outside wall and in the overhang. When I called him on it, he tried to tell us that he didn't take insulation out that the outside plumber did and that if I wanted the insulation put in I'd have to pay to take the ceiling down, put in the insulation, and re-do the drywall. I disagreed and my pictures proved it (taken w/date b/f the outside plumber was in our house!) (2) Our contractor also claimed the outside plumber removed the insulation in our basement, but yet again my pictures proved otherwise! In both cases he asked to see the pictures & the picture date and acknowledged we were correct...he fixed the ceiling insulation and is supposed to replace the basement insulation after the final plumbing & electrical inspections.

Work with a talented KD. Interview many KDs, and it will become clear who the true professionals are. Make all of your decisions beforehand so you can make the tradeoffs (ie, busy countertop OR backsplash?) consciously, before you are backed into a corner by prior decisions. Don't cut corners on the foundational items in favor of "bling." Think of what features you will really need and use rather than being sold on the latest "must haves." i know many on this forum downplay the usefulness of a KD, but ours was the key to making our kitchen everything we wanted. He coordinated the whole process seamlessly with our GC and save for a few surprises (issues that cropped up with the house itself), the reno was completed on time and without major headaches.

There were no crossing lights here either. There were so many accidents at this crossing, they got rid of the road completely.. it went over the tracks kind of sideways.. very dangerous.

Glad your DD was okay Leslie. My Mom's car also was hit and totaled after it died on the tracks, but thankfully she got out when she saw the train coming.

These tracks are kind of sideways too. A long time ago, I remember my younger sister was spend the night with her girlfriend who lived beside those tracks, during the summer months. It was their summer place, next to a lake. Anyway, that night, a train hit a car and killed the 9 yr. old girl in the car. She has a fear of tracks to this day.
I'm glad your family wasn't hurt either.
