About a Cold

My granddaughter lives with us and me and my husband do not agree many things but this 1 thing has caused the issue this wekk! I want your opinion please.

This last week we had a chilly day in Florida. I asked my gd to wear long sleeves and a hoodie jacket to school. She already had a cold. I was in a big hurry that morning and did not see that she wore short sleeves unser this hoodie. I asked her since we did not have time to go back home to wear her hoodie all day.

Upon picking her up she was not wearing the hoodie. I was not happy about this beacuse most of the kids where still in jackets. I would say it was in the mid to high 60's.

My husband told her tonight that he agreed with her. I thought that when you have a cold you should stay bundled up. So he told her to just do what I say when I am she knows I am going to be around to appease me.

I am not worried about the what he said to her about appeasing me but I would like to know what you think as mothers and fathers and staying bundled up to prevent getting a worse cold.

Nothing to do with it....if you are not chilled and shivering ( which indicated a fever) being bundled up has no bearing on your cold.
Drinking lots of water and eating foods rich in vitamine C and A is a lot more relevant.

Your husband told your granddaughter to lie to you (say yes to your face and then do what she wants behind your back)? Yeah, I'd have a major issue with that. I don't have an issue with someone wearing a short sleeve shirt when it's in the high 60s, sick or not. But you told her to do something, and she should have done it.

Why was she going to school with a cold?

Rick and Marie - TYVM. 45-50 was my thought. But now Marie is saying hers are good to 30. If they safe down to 30 that would work perfect for me. I just purchased a Dwarf Moro Blood Orange Tree that is good down to 32. We don't see a lot of nights under 30. My thought for that was to build a burlap covered frame to set over top of it. It's almost to heavy to move. I would just build the frame a little bigger so I can place multiple plants under it. I might put some accessory lights(e.i.Christmas lights) for added heat. For the most part all my plants are good down to 30-32. Some lower. I am mainly concerned about my DRs. I will bring my seedlings in @50. But if my bigger plants can handle the chill down to 30-40 than I may just leave them out just cover them at night. I believe that is the way they would prefer it. Cold and dormant. Trying to come up with a consensus from growers and not scientists or horticulturist. I would assume that you're actual climate. Temp, Humidity, Precipitation and others; all play a part in how actual hardy your particular plants are. It maybe the HRV. Call the builder and ask if the heating system is under warranty. I believe these HRV have a device included to prevent air from entering unless the heating or air conditioning is running.

I'm not even sure sowing it earlier in winter would have helped. Clothiers says something like 6 weeks warm moist followed by 6-8 weeks cold moist. Druse says sow fresh seed (making that sowing in late summer or Fall when ripe, there's the warm moist period) and it still may take a year even then. If you've got seeds now, you've nothing to lose by trying - that seed isn't getting any fresher ;). The suggestions are conditions that are known to have produced seedlings, those databases don't necessarily mean they are the only way you can get seedlings. Sow in something sturdy since the pots may be with you a while. Do you have chick grit, or even parakeet gravel, fine aquarium gravel (often available at pet stores by the pound and cheap)...might not hurt to put a light layer on the pots top to help with liverworts or mosses on those pots that may be intact several months. I don't have as many at this house but still a few....pots growing plants. When I would have a seed pot I wanted to keep several months, I would tuck it in at the base of pots with outdoor plants in them and that way I wouldn't forget to water it occasionally over summer. Another place the topping of grit or fine gravel comes in, you aren't dislodging the seed watering, the grit prevents the seed from moving around if you wet with a hose nozzle or sprinkling can. The only cimicifuga I brought with me is C. Brunette and I haven't sown it, I don't know that the foliage color would come true from seed. Love the fragrance but it blooms very late for me here. And has never given me any volunteers/seedlings.

Thanks for all of the good thoughts around the grandson's birth. She just wants a girl and keeps trying :-) Yesterdays checkup found them both to he doing fine. Roselee, sounds like you are ready for the winter! All of you really. Mara, I love your tree! Red, blue and white makes a lovely statement! We have pre-lit artificial tree, I really need to hang the ornaments! Santa and the giant wreath are up outside. Jeff set up the villages inside. I hung some bells on the doorknobs and hung the door wreath. MsRed Byrd, do you think it was heat (assuming it was stored in the attic) that turned your tree brown? That must have been disappointing! We got down to 24 last Friday morning so the outdoor plants are looking like wilted spinach right now. I've been good about reducing the number of tropicals, only have 9 pots inside this year. Of course one is a 35 gallon pot with my Musa Rojo and one is a 15-20 gallon pencil cactus. Hubby hates the fungus gnats and I really try my hardest not to bring bugs in with them. Every year I dose them a week or two apart with Bayer Advanced. The past two years I tried sand on top and in the saucer to prevent the gnats but still had some flying around the computer monitors. A few years I tried fly strips, but after getting my hair caught on one, I decided that they were too hazardous. We are headed for a deep freeze Sunday through Tuesday. Lows in the twenties.

Kids always go to school with colds! A minor cold can linger on for quite a few days and not be so bad you need to stay in bed.

I am from the midwest and a day in the mid sixties you would probably see lots of kids in t-shirts.

I do not think it will affect the cold much.

But I do not like your husbands statements about doing things only when your around. It is teaching her to be sneaky.

Hi Hoakie!

I agree with what everyone above said.

1. Not wearing a coat will not make you sicker.
2. 60 degrees is not too cold to be in short sleeves.
3. What was she doing going to school if she was sick.
4. She should have listened to you and worn the hoodie.

And the biggest concern for me:

Ok first of all. This was a cold she had had for about a week already. She was at the end of it. Just still a sore throat and runny nose. No fever. So going to school was not a problem. Also she is one of those children that wants perfect attendance and if I had thought she was real sick I would have insisted that she stay home.

This was our first cold snap here and I thought she should stay bundled up to keep from getting sick all over again. I was always taught that when you are sick you stay bundled up to keep from getting sicker. Remember I am from Florida and 60 degrees is close to our winters! Today it was in the 70's and she has had a long sleeve short on all day saying she was chilly. So explain that!

About my husband I talked to him this morning and told him how I felt. I was not happy with the remark and he told me he would talk to her about it. I told him the damage was done. I am not happy about this at all. I am on the verge of leaving because of all this.

These children are of no blood relation to either of us. They are his last wifes grandkids that passed away. (his step grandkids) They spend more time with me than with him and the gd had no respect for me at all. I am sick of all of it and this was about the thing that pushed me over the limit.

Time will tell that happens here. Things have to change!

But thanks for all the post I am open for any remarks to ehelp me out here!
