Halloween is around the corner. Time to have a little food fun.

I have been asked by friends for food ideas. Still trying to come up with some new ideas.

What are you planning?

At the University of Virginia they hold a big trick-or-treat event on "The Lawn" in front of the Rotunda. Students who have a dorm room right on the lawn give out candy from their room. Other groups set up a table and give out candy There are huge lines of kids slowly making their way to all of the dorms and tables Others just hang out and walk around seeing others and being seen One favorite I saw was Leia, Han, and Luke, with Chewbacca on a leash I wore a bat costume I made for a party the previous night and at the end I found a buddy.

Now that I've answered a broad, sure anyone!, I see we're talking about the more general sense of what is going on. . The reality of this year is, I won't be handing anything out. Where I lived before I bought here? Three houses ago, it was fun and our baby was little. Two houses ago, almost no one came to our end of the block, but still fine fun! One house ago, it was our neighborhood block party. Everyone was out and everyone was kind and fun! New house: in 2015, we were at Contest of Champions and left a bowl with a note. In 2016, we were home and the trick or treaters were so rude, we closed up shop and went inside. It was the bused in crowd, not the nice neighbors I have. This year, I have a fence which will remain closed off with a bowl and a note to please take one. I'll be inside and not risk encountering the bused in group again. Oy were they rude as all get out. They were reaching in and grabbing stuff out of the bowl. Or just stood and glared at you. Not all of them, but some of them.

I'm jealous of y'all, and miss where I used to live. I hole up in my house here. It is the only time of year I do not like where I live. I'm happy to give up 3 hours out of a year. This morning, my neighbor and I had to go out and pick up garbage all over our neighborhood. Trick-or-treaters here are loud, obnoxious and as I just explained throw trash everywhere. Not just the kids, I found Jell-O shot containers in my yard. Yes houses give out treats to the adults here too. Which they did in my last neighborhood. Nobody threw trash on the ground there. So why do they here? Same city, different part of town.

They started at 6pm on the dot! I had 100 pieces of candy, handed out one per child, and had run out by 7:10, with 50 minutes still to go! I had seriously underestimated what I would need, but it had been a few years (either at work, or Covid the past 2) and I had forgotten how much I used to buy. T&T is big in my neighborhood! I do have to say that I don't think I had ever seen so many parents with very young toddlers who could barely walk or talk sending them up to get candy... it was a bit surprising to me. ETA: we do think that we have several groups who come in from other parts of the metro area, because our neighborhood has the reputation of being fun and friendly, but they are no problem at all. Occasionally we have a issue with (usually a) parent who is inappropriate - grabbing handfuls of candy or even stealing a bowl.

In the past, in trying to make eating more interesting for the gluten intolerant, I came across this really amazing nut, known as caltrop, water chestnut, buffalo nut, bat nut, devil pod, Singhara or Eurasian water chestnut.

You can get the fresh nuts in a Chinese store, and you can get the flour also. There are many recipes you can find online. Great for gluten free cooking or regular cooking.

[The main ingredient in some gluten-free naans is water chestnut flour. This flour is called singhare ka atta in India and is eaten by Hindu ladies on festive occasions or fasts, in place of a gluten diet. It is also an important ingredient in traditional Chinese cooking.]

I feel sorry for the kids in NY area. Laast year Halloween was cancelled because of a freak snow storm. This year looks like Sandy will cancel out Trick or Treating.

Adult's Halloween parties will still be OK, may be?

One suggestion for a party I am invited to.

Sous vide beef tenderloin with baked Kabocha squash.

dcarch, those nuts look really interesting. As you know, I have a couple of celiacs in the family, so I'm always looking for something new.

I'm going to look for those the next time I get to the oriental market.

Oh, I like the squash too, what a great decoration, although I'd hate to ruin it by eating it.
