Can I reduce the sugar in a too-sweet coffeecake recipe?

I made a recipe for a Swedish coffee cake that I first tried when a guest at someoneÂs house. I raved about it so much she gave me the recipe. It was nothing to look at but the taste was incredible: simple but so good.

But mine tastes too sweet and I donÂt know why, since I followed her recipe exactly. Can I reduce the sugar or would that change the proportions and make it not come out right? The recipe calls for brown sugar, not saying which kind. I only had dark brown so thatÂs what I used. Could that alone make a difference? It seems a little moister than hers too: falls apart a little too easily. The ingredients are white sugar, brown sugar, flour, baking soda, butter, eggs, and buttermilk. The butter is cut into the dry ingredients then the eggs and buttermilk stirred in.

I donÂt feel I can post the recipe details in their entirety since she did not give me permission to publicize her family recipe.
