Suicide.

A friend of someone that my son goes to school with committed suicide either yesterday or today. His dad is a fireman and was one of the people that had to respond to the call.

I just wanted to post this so that all parents can watch their teens. These things seem to happen in groups. When one teen does it the rest that have been thinking about it see it as a green light.

My daughter tried it several years ago..Thank God she changed her mind before it was too late.

Please parents....talk with your kids. I just needed to say this.

Thanks for that comment. It is a thing to watch with teens, it's such a scary thought, isn't it.

I saw a show recently about a teen who killed herself. Lovely girl, nice school, nice family.

Turned out she had depression, she kept a diary. She was so ashamed of feeling sad, she thought it was a sign of weakness, so she didn't bring it up with her parents.

Very sad story.

I think it's important to talk about how they feel.

My son has been moody lately, he is 16, and I have tried to bring up the topic of feelings, but it's very tricky. They just clam up!

I guess a good thing to say is "are you feeling sad?".

What do others think - what is a good way to talk about feelings and sadness, with teens, especially boys ?

Hello popi...I am not an expert by any means when it comes to this. But I can give you my suggestions. If you feel you should talk to a professional please do so.....I would let DS know that you have noticed his change in moods lately and that you are concerned about him. Letting him know that you are not judging him nor do you want to criticize him. You are just concerned. Is there something with a friend, a teacher, school work or perhaps something within himself that is bothering him. Like...is he nervous or anxious about things, afraid now that he is growing up and getting closer to graduation. Maybe his friends are moving in a direction with their behavior that makes him uncomfortable....Is he on the computer a lot? Does he have a "My Space" account? Watch those things if you can....check the history of the computer that he has been on and see what type of sites he visits.

Let him know that you are there for him NO MATTER WHAT. and that he can come to you anytime, night or day to talk, to have you listen.

I know that many parents feel that the privacy of a teen is a sacred thing and many would not cross the line of reading emails or diaries......I would if I saw change in them. Like the show that you just watched. The girl expressed her feelings in her diary...I would rather she be mad at me then not alive....I wish you well with your son. Mine is 16 also and this is a difficult time for young men. We talk A LOT!.

Daisy: Since own-root roses are small, I move them around a lot and observe their roots. OWN-ROOT W.S. 2000 has thinner roots & more cluster roots thus need a fluffy medium to push through. In contrast, Comte de Chambord has long woody sticks, not much cluster roots, and cannot handle tons of acidic rain resulting in black spots. Hard woody roots need hard-minerals in clay to form. W.S. 2000 as own-root has PALE and small leaves. Small leaves mean it needs fluffy or sandy soil, and pale leaves mean it blooms best with acidic rain. It refused to bloom with my alkaline tap water at pH 9. In contrast, DARK-GREEN leaves like Dee-lish, Intrigue, Liv Tyler, Arthur Bell, Double Delight, Firefighter or Evelyn bloom easily with pH 9 tap-water. Dark-green leaves are also prone to black spots during acidic rain .. while the very pale leaves like own-root W.S. 2000 never have black spots, even with tons of acidic rain. Sharifa Asma also has pale leaves as own-root and I never see blackspots on that one. pH of rain here is 4.5. First pic. is own-root W.S. 2000 in my amended clay (note the pale and tiny leaves). Second pic. is Sharifa Asma (gets rain water from my 6 rain-barrels so leaves are darker green). But own-root Sharifa Asma was very pale with alkaline tap water at pH 9. Own-root Carding Mill also has pale leaves and refused to grow with alkaline tap water. Light-green or pale leaves are BEST AS GRAFTED. I wish I had bought Sharifa as grafted. See own-root W.S. 2000 below: Own-root Sharifa Asma below: All my 134 varieties are own-roots, and Facebook Fragrant Rose Lovers (founded by Khalid) helps me in choosing dark-green and large-leaves for my alkaline & dense clay. Khalid urges his 1,800 international members to post bush-shots where leaves and growth can be seen. When I want an own-root rose suitable for my rock-hard clay, I search inside that Facebook group for "dark green leaves" or "large leaves". These rosarians always post bush-shots plus detailed description of each rose (lineage & types of leaves). The info. is more accurate than HMF since they post many bush-shots in different weather (above 110 F, or month-long rain, or in sandy soil, or pots, plus bush-shot videos of rose so I can see what type of soil they have). My darling husband passed away 15 days ago. We knew each other for 8 years. He was very vibrant and full of life, had a good job house and car. Internally though he was suffering from chronic depression and was addicted to alcohol for many years even before i knew him. It got worse when he lost his mother 3 years ago. He would constantly talk about killing himself, praying that God would take his life. It was like seeing him die everyday. I prayed that he comes out of his depression, went to the psychiatrist to get meds for him, put him in rehab, gave him unconditional love but nothing seemed to work. He stopped eating and would just drink and watch the tv the whole day and night. Any attempt at communication was met with silence. He did not want to talk about anything. He gradually became so weak that he was bed ridden. I would coax him to eat or at least have some soup or juice but it was an uphill task. 3 years and 10 hospitalizations later he is no more. His body and organs were so weak that it could not process any medicines. I just wish that he would be alive today maybe he would have made an effort at living. People tell me that he is free from his worries and depression. I hope he is finally at peace. People say that your love was one sided but i know that he loved me and needed me. He would feel more depressed when i was not around him. I would call him my sunflower. In the end i feel he could not help himself. I miss my darling a lot.

Sagae made it ....to write another letter....he's got a budding career as a writer after all! Ahem... Any of you who don't care for minis...what do you think about their survival? I have thought about the implications for the personnel who are expected to "assist" the suicide. There are some who have no problem with it, some who even make it their life's work, but I would not want to be asked to play a role. I've encountered some folks who want it, but don't want to take the action themselves. I'm not comfortable with asking another, MD or not, to take on that emotional burden, even if they express no qualms about it. If the time comes for me, I will find a way that doesn't involve someone else in any way. I have a detailed addendum to my medical POA and living will explaining when or when not to resuscitate/use life support, and institute comfort care only....when I run races I write on my bib to limit CPR.

You're exactly right. One suicide often leads to others. The statistics show that once there's one suicide in a family, the odds go up astronomically that there will be another. Unfortunately, in my husband's family, there have been 6 (maybe 7) suicides over the years.

Normally, we see suicide as unthinkable, something so wrong, that we shouldn't ever consider it. But once someone you know (friend or family) has committed suicide, it ceases to be an unthinkable act and becomes a viable solution to ones' problems.

I'm a strong proponent of ANYONE who has been touched by suicide getting the appropriate counselling. Of course, that's so hard with teens--they are so closed down at times, so reluctant to let others in. If that's the case, then it cannot hurt for the parents to sit down with a knowledgeable counsellor to learn what they can do to help.
