That Time Of Year....Halloween Party With Friends

Hi everyone,

Next Saturday, I'm having a small Halloween party with a few friends of mine, some of which who were in attendance for the picnic. It's at the same location as the picnic, and I know of at least three of us, including myself, who are arriving in costume.

For the menu, it'll be simple party foods, but, I am thinking of giving them Halloween adjectives in front of the name of the food. Deviled eggs are the only menu item that won't be changed. For example: Ghastly Guacamole, Spooktacular Salsa, and so on. I may make some lemonade for the occasion, but I did find a recipe for some Trick Or Treat punch in my one Halloween recipe book that sounded quite scrumptious.

As for my costume, I am being very brave and creative with it is all I can say. I feel good wearing it, but the people's reaction is the true test. Some of my friends know what I am going as, and they all think it'll be wonderful, but, next Saturday is the true test when I have it all put together.

Brad, it sounds like a blast, and I can't wait to hear about your costume. We used to have that kind of party when I was younger, and then my daughters had them. Amanda's birthday is November 2, so birthday parties often had Halloween themes.

Oh, don't forget the breadstick "fingers" to go with the dip, with a sliced almond for a fingernail. (grin)

I just saw a YouTube video of cake pops that were made to look like a brain, I'm going to figure those out, there was this mold, not a big one like the "brain" jello mold I have, but smaller individual brains, LOL.

Thank you, Annie! Not only will you get to hear about it, but I will post pictures of me in costume! :-). LOL Those brain cake pops sound like an interesting cooking project for sure.

Mellon--Lovely, lovely package. So generous and thoughtful!! She sent me a ton of stuff. My friend Mare is visiting and she remarked "It's just like Christmas!!". Oh, yah. She's been helping me get my dahlias in the ground because I have an injured left wing. Mellon gifted me with TWO hostas 'Chinese Sunrise' & 'Plantangea'. Heucherra 'Can Can'; Daylily 'Erin Leah'; Wigalea 'Ruby Glow'; and a big fat bulb of lilia 'Black Beauty'. Love, love, love it all. Everything was well wrapped and packaged. GAME TIME....girls were off to watch the ponies again! THE PREAKNESS 2014 RULES: At presant, there are 10 horses running. Rules are pretty much the same as The Kentucky Derby. This time SHIRLEY does not get to pick two horses...sorry! *To Shirley and each of her party guests (if you want to play), pick one horse and put your name next to it. DO NOT PICK a horse that someone has already chosen. *If you choose a horse and it is scratched, meaning for whatever reason it does not run in the race...to bad....LOL! *If you decide to play, please post your pick by 3PM Eastern/12 Noon Pacific on Saturday, May 17. If there are any horses left, I will put horse name(s) in a dog bowl...and in another dog bowl put all of the party guests that are playing.......and possibly you will get another horse. ******If per chance, you come late to the game and all the horses are spoken for, I will have another game....YOU WILL PICK WHO COMES IN LAST PLACE. 7 pm seems like dinner time to me. If you invited me for a party then, I'd expect that to be my dinner. Appetizer-type foods only would be fine, but I'd make sure you had loads, because your guests will be hungry and filling up on them. You will really have to be careful about how you word the invitation. "Hors d'oeuvres" implies before dinner, not after. If you want to make sure people don't expect to make a meal of it, call it "desserts" or "cocktail party." I'd do a cocktail party at, say, 5:30 - 8:00, and desserts at 8:00. I'm not saying you have to feed guests a meal every time you entertain. But if you don't, then don't make it at a meal time. It's not considerate of your guests, and it will backfire on you if you only prepare a little bit and the first guests eat all of it before the others come.

Bumblebeez - Thank you, I do a lot of tasting before I make a dish especially for company, I want to give them a good experience and next time that I invite them, they are going to look forward. Try to make the farro salad, it is one of my favorites grains, if you have a local Italian market, look for authentic Italian farro if not look for sometimes they called it spelt here, if you get this one it has be cooked longer. Add any salad greens that you like, any cut up veggies and a vinaigrette of your choice, the sky is the limit on the choices of add-ons, everything that you like you can add like nuts, beans, lentils even dried fruit. If you don't add fresh greens, you can keep it in the fridge for longer time already made. Annie - That is so good that you found the purple sweet potatoes and the red rice. When my friends were here, I took one of the purple sweet potatoes and told them that I was going to cook for them the next time. Dcarch - I feel the same way when I bring my friends together, I like to give them a good time sharing food and company. I am going to give you the details beyond the scenes before the party,lol. Drinks, wines and mixed drinks that I know they like, one guests is a non-drinker and likes soda. Charred salsa went well with chips, they all liked it, because one of the guests I made it not too spicy. The soup was the bomb, the recipe called for adding 2 cups of water, I didn't. And it was good! however I had more things to eat so I didn't want to make them full. Then I thought about the cute Arabic coffee cups, but I only had 6 in a set and we were 9, so I remember the other non-matching expresso and put them in. I had a ramekin cup that I don't show,lol. Note to me, get some more cute cups that match! The BBQ went well, I marinated the shrimp in a spicy marinade to give it some flavor. 2 pounds. The other kebabs were sausage and bought 3 pounds of kielbasa and put them in skewers with red onion and peppers and had them in a marinade of pesto, half cilantro, half parsley. Dismiss the hot dogs, they are for my dogs, they were having a party too and they get the angus ones, no nitrates. Now the sides. I had 12 ears of corn, 6 went to the chipotle corn salad served at room temperature, and 6 went to a corn cakes made mostly of pureed corn and cook with cheese on top, they love this and is originally a humita recipe that I changed it. The black beluga salad was originally with mushrooms, but I thought they don't keep too well, so I made it with a mustard dressing. One of the guest (French chef) said was the bomb! and I had leftover roasted red peppers and put them in the dish. The red rice was assembled like I described before. I always try to buy something from the Himalayas to remind me the time that I spent there, beautiful memories, their cooking is a hot fusion of Chinese cooking and Indian. When my cauliflower is in season (soon) I make a dish that is very popular monsoon time, cauliflower and potatoes. The wasabi arugula was just harvested for them to try, I figured since they were all foodies, they would liked that, and they did. The desserts I had to use the meyer lemons and the pie was great tasting but rich, they all like it. The cookies was something different and easy to make, also finger food. And Dcarch after seen your posts, I bought the book Eleven Madison Avenue, even if I don't learn about the sauces and pickles there, it is a beautiful coffee table book. Silvia

Some of my theatre family got to see me in my costume today, and while there were a few laughs (I am sure in good fun and not in a negative way), they seemed to like it very much.

Shall I give you all a hint or keep it a surprise?

We have a big halloween party every year. Some foods that I have made for the party in past years are:

Deviled Eggs (with horns!)

Green peppercorns for eyes, Capers for noses, and pimento peppers for mouths and horns.

Roast Zombie Arms:

Roast pork tenderloins with chicken wing for fingers

Green Slime Punch:

Limeade with lime sherbet floating in it.

Witches Brew Stew

Brazilian black bean stew, aka Feijoada

I usually make ghostly macaroons for our Halloween party. The usual macroroon recipe, but I make them taller to give them a ghostly body and then I use two chocolate chips or two cinnamon redhots to give them eyes.

bob_cville, those are great deviled eggs!

I've only seen this type of 'halloween food' in photos and the worst I have ever seen are the "kitty litter" cakes and cookies! how could anyone eat that?! LOL!

Great pictures, bob_cville!

I heard from my friend who's home is the site of the party. She told me her sister is bringing sloppy joes and loaded baked potato casserole :-). Meaning, all she and I have to fix are the deviled eggs, some kind of dip (maybe guacamole), a beverage, and something sweet.

T-Minus 2 days and counting!

Found this on the San Francisco Chronicle website, but it looks like it first came from Sunset. Some great ideas.

I "met" Cruella twice at Disneyland last summer. As she said the second time she passed me, "Twice in one day---lucky you" in THAT voice!

Brad, I like the Poison Puppy Chow idea. I used to make puppy chow for my girls, it was just Chex cereal coated with a mixture of melted chocolate and peanut butter, then shaken with copious amounts of powdered sugar. It DID kind of look like puppy chow too....

I can't wait to see pictures.

I think I'm making ribs, eyes and brains.....

The party was a hit and so was my costume! We only made the deviled eggs and some Trick Or Treat Punch (frozen lemonade concentrate, orange powdered drink mix, and ginger ale and we cut up an orange to add to the pitcher). All the other food was delicious and a good time was had by all. Two of our guests didn't show up, but still it was a good time just catching up with old friends and got to meet some new people as well. Stay tuned for when I post pictures of me in costume!
