One last time: Guest room curtains

Really, I'm so over this. I bought these the other day:

The style, fabric, and size is perfect. I wanted the "cream" color, but they only had "ivory" in stock. The ivory is just seeming too beige-y to me. In certain light it almost looks like a pale tan. Here's a sample of what the cream fabric looks like next to the ivory.

So, do I wait until the cream curtains arrive (backordered until May) or suck it up and be done with it? I like the cream because it's the exact same color as the wall paint, and I think makes the room look bigger. OTOH, the cream will show every speck of dirt and cat hair...

I would wait until May for the cream since you like that better. It will be here before you know it. Are you planning on accenting them with pink?

Being in Backorder Hell myself, I feel your pain. But I agree - wait until May, when you can get what you really want. It's 3 months away, but you'll be "stuck" with the ivory - which you obviously don't really want - for much longer than that if you settle. If you want the curtains to blend with the walls, the cream is definitely best.

There are a lot of books and mag articles on such a topic, and I have come across lots of features in my years of taking too many magazine subscriptions, so you might browse a bookstore or search the net for great photos. The closet might be able to be outfitted as the actual "office," if you use the right doors and really outfit the inside. There are lots of decor features on that approach. That is more important, I think, if you and your nuclear family want to use the room more often as a cozy library/study and can then close the doors on printer, FAX, etc. but also is a great way to maximize floor space, since you can use a closet as an "indent" in a room for office equipement and desk, but can't sleep in the closet! Sofa bed vs. Murphy bed can be space-saving. There are furniture lines for installing Murphy bed and associated cabinetry. This approach is more for if you yourself don't need the sofa and want to preserve more floor space and a clean-lined look. Otherwise, a compact sofa bed would serve you and your family for library. Shelving is key and you should be prepared to design and install it so that it works for you--(or have done professionally). That goes for the whole room--by that I mean, draw your floorplan and wall views with windows, doors and really brainstorm on different ways to use the space. For example, you might be able to surround a sofa bed with built in shelves floor to ceiling for a great library look, whereas a lot of free-standing shelves would take up space. Or, you might be able to find free-standing shelf units you can pair and connect with a bridge. Lots of ideas like that. Of course you have a budget, but try to think outside the box and be prepared to buy a new item if it will really make the space work better--so if your current file cabinet doesn't work well, you might budget for one that fits better or is more streamlined, or maybe you need 2 matching and put over them a desk top. As in first paragraph, there are huge numbers of ideas on multi-tasking furniture for these purposes--file cab as bedside table or under a table top and skirt; rolling file or printer stand that rolls under desk top; storage containers that might let you "remove" a few items temporarily when guest using the room and needs place for luggage, and return later.

Agree with the others about the curtains, so it's unanimous! Do not care for the lamps on the nightstands. They look like desk lamps and unless they have VERY heavy bases they look like they would be pulled off the tables if they were moved around very much. Do you have to have matching lamps? I know it is the usual thing, but it isn't really necessary. Love the wall color and looking forward to seeing the curtains in situ.

Maggie great job! You sure as didn't need any help, that is a gorgeous spread. I should have mentioned this when I posted the recipe. I think Gougere are best when cooked as close to preparing the batter as possible in order to get maximum "puff" and best texture. I'll add this note to my recipe. I usually put them in the preheated oven about a half hour before I want to serve them (when doing the singles). Mind you these are lovely served hot or at room temp and I bet they would reheat quite nicely. They will also spread if the batter is to thin. It should be a very stiff batter that does not move freely from the spoon. If using extra large eggs three may be enough. Linda I think any hard cheese would work. I believe the correct pronunciation is Goo-jair..but maybe Monique or Mitch can help.

Also...make your refrigerator look "built-in" If you keep it w/the cabinet to the left (maybe a 12" deep Utility cabinet for broom, dustpan, etc.?), then * Put a 3/4" finished end panel on the right side of the refrigerator that's as deep as the carcass/box of the refrigerator (if it's a cabinet-depth that would mean somewhere b/w 24" & 27"). The door(s) will extend past the panels so you can still open the doors fully. * Put a full-depth cabinet above the refrigerator If you don't keep that cabinet on the left or put in base + upper cabinet, then do the same as above except put end panels on both sides of the refrigerator. As Holligator said, if you don't have any cabinets on the left, then you will need filler to allow the refrigerator door to open fully (not just the 90o needed to get most things out)...for the greater angle that will be needed to open and/or remove drawers or bins. The refrigerator door must clear the doorway trim around and then some. You'll probably need at least 6" of filler. The cabinet idea is a much better idea. For that cabinet on the left, depending on your cabinet/door style (partial overlay/full overlay/inset) you may need filler b/w the cabinet & refrigerator to ensure the cabinet will open. The best way to accomplish this is to put a 3/4" end panel on both sides of the refrigerator. If you have partial overlay you probably won't need that end panel/filler. However, you will still need filler to the left of the cabinet. Right now, the door trim will be in the way of it opening. You will need enough filler to clear that door trim...but it will be much less than you would need for the refrigerator...only an inch or two.

Thanks for that. The irony of all of this? Those cream curtains were my very first choice for that room ages ago. I talked myself out of them several times, but kept going back to look at them.

In the meantime, either bought or ordered and returned many, many others, but here they are again. I just know in my gut that they're going to be perfect, and I'm just going to have to wait it out. Maybe they'll come sooner?

I haven't decided if I'll add a trim to them or not. I'm working on some other things in that room, and since the drapes will done last, I'll just wait and see if they need anything or not. I keep thinking of hot pink ball fringe...

I would have liked the ivory, if I hadn't seen the cream. Go w/your gut and wait it out. You have good instincts.

But hot pink ball fringe just made me laugh out loud. Thanks!!!!

One thing I have *finally* learned.... I always regret not getting what I really want. It seems whether I cave in because of price, ease of getting it, timing it, whatever.... I ALWAYS regret not getting what I know I want in my heart...

Isn't that so true? I'm just mad at myself for not buying those a year ago when I first saw them. None of my other rooms has been this much of a chore, so I'm mad at myself for wasting all of that time and money on other choices, when I should have just bought them first. Lesson learned.

Really, hot pink ball fringe. All down the leading edges. I think it could look fabulous, but it's potential as a cat toy troubles me. And you know what else? Since I rearranged the furniture and starting playing around in that room, it's the kitten's favorite room! I keep finding Mo snuggled in the pillows. The room still has some accessories to go, but my Mom and sister saw it the other day and just went on and on about how much better it looked, and how changing the furniture around made it look so much bigger. And they apologized for making "that face" when I said I was painting the furniture hot pink. Heh!

You could pin the trim on and take it off for cleaning and when you felt like it.

Hot pink ball fringe is no laughing matter >:/

I looked at all 2694 offerings at Kravet and came up with these. A couple of them are only probably slightly more expensive than your car.

Well, #3 is definitely a cat toy. Frank would LOVE that!

The ric-rac...love that! Although, I have a whole ric-rac attack thing going on in another room. Too much?

The next to the last is my absolute favorite, though. Wow! That's perfect! I wonder if maybe I could buy a tiny piece of it to trim out a lampshade or a pillow? This lamp will be here any day now, and it's going to need a special shade.

That one is not Kravet Couture, It's Kravet Design and its Chinese Rayon and Wool rather than Italian and silk. So it may not be toooo expensive (relatively?). There was an issue at my parents house when I picked the fringe for the living room curtains (I'm such a weirdo, I was like 20) and it was Italian, silk, and $95 a yard, about ten times the price of most of the contenders. Its still there, since 1983, so I guess over its life cycle thats not bad, but that extra je ne sais quoi caused a bit of ruckus. (and made the price sky rocket. hmph)

GREAT NEWS!!!! I made a few calls, and there's another store that has them in stock, and they're holding them for me until Monday!!! Woohoooo!!

Pal, that's a hoot! There's always something to be said for quality! I could totally settle for Chinese rayon and wool. Better than Chinese polyester, no?

Jamies, thanks for looking. I've been trolling ebay all week, and just decided that I didn't want to have to buy anything that would need to be altered. The pair I need are 75x84, and I need two sets of them.

Lol, palimpsest! I had a fit over the cost of the trim samples for some of our curtains . . . . The designer heard me rant and then said "well kswl, what can I tell you? It costs to be fabulous."

We now use that as a family saying :)
