Tell me how you clean your stainless range?

Yesterday (while fridge shopping!) I purchased a Capital stainless range on deep discount.

Now I am thinking about cleaning the range, and want to hear from people who have one and how you keep it looking great. I'm especially interested in environmentally friendly, non-toxic methods. I'd like to be ready upon delivery as I have BIG plans for this baby, and I also need to be ready to train DH in the new methods before he learns any bad habits.

Finally, is there any cleaner I should avoid? I know to avoid scouring pads and abrasive cleaners, anything else?

Here's what I've learned from GWer's. I use dish soap and water for general cleaning. For heavier cleaning I use Barkeepers Friend or a paste made from baking soda and water. For a little shine I use baby oil.

Wonderful you got a new range!

How do I clean mine?
Actually I have stainless on all sides but the top
of my range is gas on glass. So I do not have the
big challenge of scrapping off burnt food from SS.

My grates are wondeful, as I can take these up and put
them into my dishwasher to clean. They come out looking
perfect.

This is not eco friendly but it is better than using
fumes or chemicals to strip the grates. I do use pledge
to clean the rest of the stainless peices. Again not
sure if this is what you are looking for as far as
environmentally healthy.

Wow, that sounds like a lot of work! I can't help you as I still have a little ol' Broan that uses mesh filters, which I put in the dishwasher. Is your hood working properly, meaning is any grease getting to the cabinets, ceiling, etc?

The confusion is in the word seasoning in this application. OK it's not a wok or a cast iron pan that needs to be properly seasoned but here's Bluestar's recommendation: This is from the BS web site..."Your ring grates, top grates and burner heads may darken over time with use. This is normal. TIP: To prevent your burners from darkening at an uneven rate, rotate the ring grate and top grates between more and less active burners. BURNER CLEANING Ring Grates and Top Grates TIP: Clean spills as soon as possible to prevent sticking and build up.  When burner is cool, remove the ring grate, top grate and center filler grate (30” models only).  Wash in hot, soapy water. Rinse well and dry thoroughly to prevent rusting.  Handle gently to prevent nicks/chips, which can lead to rusting TIP: If you have a nick or chip you can season the area to prevent rusting. Nicks or chips are not covered under warranty.  Put corn oil or other high smoke point oil on a paper towel and rub onto rusted area.  Wipe away excess oil and replace the part on the range. Do not submerge the burner grates in water for extended periods of time. Prolonged exposure to moisture may cause rusting.  For heavy soiling, use a commercially available oven cleaner. Follow the cleaner manufacturer’s instructions. Make sure the cleaning chemicals do not contact any stainless steel or painted surface on your appliance.  Reinstall grates in cooktop and make sure they are seated properly, and do not move unsteadily from side to side". So, BS says it's OK to hand wash or DW and they also use the word "season" so this is maybe why it's a bit confusing to some. It's not seasoning in the traditional sense but oil on these grates will keep them looking good over the life of the grates, IMHO. show me/tell me about your niche/shelf over your range

There was a thread on this topic some months ago--see below. There are some good photos of niches. Our project is bogged down, but I have a few additional comments since I posted... Because we have to watch our pennies, I'm shopping in bargain places. One problem I have encountered is that oddball lots of tiles often don't include bullnose pieces as well as regular field tile sizes. The niche that we have roughed in will require some cute tricks to make ordinary tile edges seem attractive and classy; we don't want to just snip tiles and leave raw edges. DH, my sweaty equity, did not finish the niche smoothly when he created it in drywall because we knew we would cover it in tile. Now, we're thinking that we might not do the tiling right away and he'll have to pull out drywall tools and make a proper corner edging around the niche. This kind of "go back and do over" gig is getting very frustrating. [Meanwhile, I've found a smashingly exciting tile that of course only comes without trim pieces. It's sitting right next to me, thinking. Unfortunately it has a decidedly unfinished raw edge and will require tricky handling if we choose to use it. I just covered it over so I can't see it tempting me there on the table. Have to be more practical. ] Tile shops do carry a metal edging that can be used to finish off edges when no bullnose is available, but I haven't seen examples of it in actual use on a range niche. Would love to see a sample photo to reassure me. Also, remember that if you choose to work with a thick tile or a remnant of some kind of rock from countertop on the back of the niche, that will cut down the depth of the niche shelf. If you want the area above range/cooktop to be an artistic focal point, I humbly suggest that you either make a niche OR some kind of tile design but not both. If you choose too fancy a niche back, the items standing within the niche will compete with the tile design for viewer's attention. Mine will be a working kitchen, so we're planning to put oil bottles, vinegar bottles, salt shaker, etc. there and they are supposed to get top billing. I can help with the brown spots around the burners. I found the advice in the owner's manual for my GE Cafe range. Make a paste of baking soda and water and rub it in on the spots. It may take some elbow grease, but they will come out. I waited too long to clean mine and it took a few attempts, but the range now looks like new! Good luck

I just discovered Weiman's Stainless Steel Cleaner Wipes and I love them. We tried the Pledge, but it didn't take all the fingerprints off & definitely did not work on the drip marks. I use these once a week or every other week.

For everyday cleaning I use just simple soap & water. Someone posted recently about using Bar Keeper's Friend on their stainless and ended up with spots they couldn't remove--so I don't know that I'm brave enough to use it on my range (although I do use it in my sinks and cast iron tubs).

For the grates, I run hot water in the sink, toss in 1 or 2 Cascade Dishwasher Packs with Dawn and let them soak for about 15-20 minutes. While I wait, I use a Mr. Clean MAgic Eraser for Kitchens and wipe down the enamel stove top between and around the burners. Then I return to the grates & wipe them down with the Magic Eraser to take care of any residue that may still be clinging to them, rinse with hot water and set out to dry. I do this once a week or every other week.

Soap and water. And I occasionally use a Magic Eraser gently if food gets cooked on.

I use the BKF all the time on my stainless cookware... but I don't want to damage the range. I am mostly worried about the cooktop which is all stainless and will definitely get greasy and suffer from baked of goo. We do a lot of cooking and it just happens... The salesman said the grates are Dw safe, but I haven't read the manual yet, need to print it today at work.

Dreamhome, can you use the wipes on the cooktop where it will get very hot?
