Does this mirror work, and if so - why?

From PB:

Very angular couch, furntiture, even the windows have a grid. So do you think the round mirror works, and if so - why? WOuld it be better with a square/rectangle mirror? Oval? The lamps are kind of ovally. The vases are kind of ovally. The lampshades could resemble the mirror's shape if they were sticking out into the room instead of on the lamp. But nothing screams "foul" about that mirror to me and for the life of me I can't figure out what's making that one big circle work in a room of rectangles and slightly curving things.

I like the idea of this thread - looking at items that work well in a setting and thinking about why they do.

That mirror works because it is the right size for the wall and the framing box it sits in. It's at the right height, and the brown tones of the mirror's frame coordinate with similar tones in the room.

As madtown mentioned, the roundness works because it contrasts nicely with the squares and rectangles in the room.

OMG acountryfarm, I'm so sorry to hear about what you're going through. That sounds just awful. I really appreciate the support and wish you all the best in getting through your project too. It's so hard. I wish I had found this site before I started this project. I wish I had listened to my gut when I was deciding between this and another contractor. Such a mess. Fern4, I might be mis-stating the term "allowance". You're right, typically allowance is for materials that the owner will choose later, like tile or appliances, and the installation of these materials is included in the contract. However, like I said, the original proposal was for things like a stone bathroom, and I knew we'd be doing ceramic (which is less for material AND installation), so we put a figure in for the whole thing and now we're bidding it out (or rather I am). But one thing I can say for sure is that in no way should change orders carry a larger Profit and Overhead than the base contract. P and O should be the same amount no matter what, so that a Contractor doesn't have a benefit to changes, it should just be fair. Yes, change orders are usually items where you make a change. But they also include "unforeseen conditions" which can be a point of contention as well. What should an experienced contractor with 20 years under his belt have "foreseen"? Should they only look at the drawings and exclude everything else even if they know it's going to be necessary by Code, or whatever? It depends on the Contractor, their experience and integrity. 2 x "the times you have chocolate" x 50 always puts the times you have chocolate third postion from the right in the answer...it's a confusing way to say "times you have chocolate" x 100 the "add 5" x 50 equals 250...added to 1759 gives current year... Less birth date equals age with "times you have chocolate" third number from right. It will work in any year..next year add 1760

Oh, good. So it wasn't just me! It's been too cold to do much work in my shop, and rainy. I'm really getting tired of the rain. I did manage to finish a mushroom and start another: Also, I do most of my GardenWeb browsing at work during my lunch, but for a while they started blocking Photobucket pictures. Grrrr. You definitely lose a lot not being able to view photos on this thread. But they have released the ban (maybe too many people complained). So I'm looking forward to catching up on everyone's projects! BTW, I'm thinking about taking a class in darjit at my local JC. Anyone heard of darjit? From the description, it seems to be pretty much cement sculptures using armature (a technique I haven't tried yet), but with a mixture that isn't quite cement. I think it feels "wonky" because the tub, which is often a central item, a focal point . . . is hidden behind the door. I see why you put it there -- it's the only window, and tub-under-window is a standard. I like the size of the bathroom -- it's not overdone, and it won't cost a fortune. Here's what I'd do: - I'd bring the tub to the center so it's the first item you see upon entering the bathroom. I would not necessarily welcome walking in / staring at myself in any stage of disheaval as I walk into the bathroom first thing in the morning. - Second, I'd look at relocating the closets to the upper right. Why? Because this would allow your closet to extend into the not-unsubstantial space under the large staircase. It might not be "prime space" because it'll be short, but you could have space for boxes /out of season items BEHIND your clothing. I'd want that space. I do agree that the closet doors need to open OUT -- you don't want to have to enter the closet /close the door to reach items behind the door. Pocket doors aren't an option in this small space, but you could go with bi-fold doors. - Having said that, the shower has to go somewhere. Could it go in that oddly shaped space that is now a closet that's to the right /back behind the door? A shower can be an odd shape. You'd be set up to have some cool little triangular shelves in the back corner. - And that would leave the left side of the room for the toilet and the sink. I'd pull the toilet out of its claustrophobic, difficult-to-clean closet, and I'd place it kind of behind the door -- in a spot that's private but not so closed off as to be inconvenient. If you do leave the shower in its current spot, for sure change the swing of the shower door -- it'd be more convenient if it opened towards the room. I see that in this scenerio, you lose the window above the tub. I'd go with a little niche, perhaps to be filled with candles? And let the window be above the toilet. Perhaps you could have smaller windows (for light but no view) above the vanity /mirror?

Yes graywings - exactly. I think it works, but I couldn't put my finger on why. I have that problem A LOT when it comes to decor.

If I were shopping for a mirror over that couch, I would think it should be rectangular (although I would probably think rectangular was a bit overdone), or I would've looked for something shaped like a platter - rectangular with rounded corners, to mimic the shape of the vase and lamps. I don't think in a million years I would've picked a round mirror, but I like it.

The mirror also has a certain chunkiness to it that plays well with the visual weight of the other pieces.

Graywings stated it very well, imo.

I also think the mirror works because it has depth in the frame, that gives the wall some additional interest. If it were a flat mirror, since there are no drapes, the wall area would feel very flat, one dimensional.

Plus, while you are thinking the lamps are oval, I believe they are round as are the shades. I think it is perspective that is perhaps flattening them visually.

Yes, the depth of the frame - that's what sets it apart from your average round mirror.

...but yet, I've heard HGTV designers say "oh, the round mirror picks up on the circles in the upholstery fabric"! No circles here, but I like it.

Visually, it works ok, but I don't know if it would work in my room IRL. The depth of that mirror frame makes me wonder both about banging a head on it when sitting and having to dust the thing, top and bottom.

I think the depth of the mirror works because there's a shelf or narrow sofa table behind the sofa--so no head banging will happen.

The mirror works because it is round, just like the lamp bases, and visually is included in the group of 3.
