Depends on where I am. Restaurants, no. Department stores, no. Any service like oil changes, tree trimming, YES! My husband wants to curl up in a little ball in the corner when I start discussing price (I call it discussing, he calls it intimidating the seller). The seller and I find the break-even point, and we are both happy. Well, at least one of us is . . . .

Yes, I haggle. The worst that can happen is that the other side says no and maybe laughs at me. Oh well, worse things can happen.

"Haggle" is a rather harsh word. For some reason, to me it conjures up images of a snaggle-toothed witch.

That may be the image salespeople conjure up when I ask them about price, but I often do. And I will continue to do so because I almost always save money that way.

I never get into long bargaining sessions; I simply ask, "What's your best price on this?" They almost always name a lower price. I used to come back with another price, but I stopped doing that because it rarely got me anywhere.

For those who have never done this, I highly recommend it. Many, many retailers have a lower price in mind that they know they will take. I've saved a fortune on furniture this way, for one thing. If you're nervous about it, you might feel as though you're choking the first time you ask for a better price, but it gets easier with practice. :-)

My husband is great at that! I can only remember one time that he didn't get a discount on a purchase.

Yes, like Alisande, I will do that when shopping at flea markets and yard sales. If I find something that I think is a great price already, I will never ask for it to be discounted.

I also don't make an issue of it. If something is $15, I may ask if they will take $10 and they will usually say $12. Usually it is something I want anyway, so I will take the $12 price.

However, if I see something I want...and it is, say, $100.
I may only be willing to pay $70, so I will ask if they will take less. If they come down to $90, and I still think it is too much, I will say "Thank you very much, but it is a little out of my price range." If they come back to $80,
I may go ahead and buy it anyway, because I wouldn't have asked about it if I didn't like it a lot in the first place,
and I will go ahead and take it. I don't try to "haggle".
Dealers can get very insulted if you are pushy about it.

Recently, thanks to SO, we purchased a living room suite for almost half of the tag price and then the owner threw in a coffee table I loved for free, and also free delivery. SO knew the owner, he said that made the haggle game even more fun.

No, I don't like it when people do it to me, ie yard sales 10 minutes after you open, or at my Etsy shop, so I don't do it to others unless there is an obvious flaw on the item.

I will haggle at a yard sale and when buying a car but that's about it.

Fairly often. Sometimes rather seriously, but sometimes in a rather easy-going, lighthearted way.

Often it works, too.

One day at a yard sale I asked the price of a few things, including a small radio - $2.00, said a young lad about 15, whose mother was there with him.

Very soon after, almost before I had time to take a breath ... he changed the price on the radio to $1.00.

In a rather light-hearted way, I said that he wasn't supposed to do that - that he was in too big a hurry - that I was supposed to offer the $1.00, then he's to consider a bit and say that he might take $1.50.

If you're going to negotiate a price ... you need to know and follow the rules.

He rather enjoyed that, I think - and his mother did as well.

Sometimes kids'll take directions from an outsider/stranger more congenially than from a parent.

I have asked for a better price at stores where they have negotiating power - car dealers, furniture, car repair.

Our friend's BIL went to a very nice department store in DC and was trying to get the lady at the perfume counter to give him a volume discount. The saleslady said "Sir, these prices are set by the manufacturer and we're not allowed to give volume discounts - they run special deals periodically" Our friend's wife was mortified!

Depends on the purchase. There are some that you could offer a new $30,000 car to them for $5 and they'll haggle over the price. To me, those people lose all credibility.

When I bought my first new vehicle and was selling my old Buick a guy kept trying to get me down in price. He sat there for an hour till I finally said this is it, take it or leave it, then he tried again. So I raised the price! The wife looked startled and said "That's HIGHER!!" I said yes and it's going to keep going up. I told you my best price and I'm not sitting here all day for free. At that rate I'll keep it as a second vehicle. The car was cheap and worth more and they knew it. So I also made them drive us down to transfer the title and pay the transfer fee. Their cheapness cost them actually.

Another favorite was when I had the computer store and a guy came in to upgrade his computer. He wanted to haggle on prices after I gave him the quote. We always gave a "best shot" price, well most of the time anyway. It wasn't an expensive upgrade and he goes, "well for that you can kinda throw in a video card on that, right?" So I go, "Sure! I can throw one in.... for $25.00" and I smiled. He thought he really pulled one over on me, grabbed the deal and I walked over to the shelf and took the card and added it into the box for his stuff... and the price tag on the card was $24.95! I'm wondering if he ever looked at it. :)

I will at a garage sale if I think the price is too high, but that is about it. Dh does the car deals. He finds out what others are paying on-line and goes from there. I am willing to pay a fair price.

I used to, when I frequented garage sales and antique shows. I once was in a fancy dress shop looking at a blouse marked $80. The clerk came over and asked "Do you like it?" Yes, but it's too expensive for me. She offered to sell it to me for $40. I bought it.

Sure, all they can say is "no." I used to buy a lot of antiques and can't remember a time I wasn't able to get a better price.

I work in a party rental business....WHY would you ask me for a discount??? Did you ask your other vendors for one? I DO listen very carefully to my customers...if I have a "party" that is very budget conscience but really WANTS something out of that....I WILL make exceptions for them...

My thinking.....if you ae hosting a party....you CAN afford it and cost should be NO factor!

I do NOT "do" garage/yard sales........so I have NO opinion on that.

I found a pair of $60 Avia sneakers at Kohl's, on sale for $29,95. Only pair my size, but there was a minor scuff on the back on one. I got another 10% off.

Nope, I don't haggle. I've had customers try to do it in our small store and we don't give extra discounts.
