Bread is heavy

Please help me figure out what I'm doing wrong with my bread!

I've been making bread for several years but am not very adventerous and haven't really learned what works and what doesn't. I have a couple of recipes that usually work very well, so I tend to stay with them. I use my bread machine for the kneading and first rise, then pull the dough out to shape, rise, and bake.

One of my "reliable" recipes is simple French baguettes - water, salt, flour, and yeast. It usually works very nicely. I haven't made any bread for several months and then last week decided to make some. It turned out very heavy. Didn't rise as nicely as it should and just was heavy - I hope you know what I mean by that. I thought maybe my yeast had become old so bought new and tried again. Slightly better, but still heavier than it should be.

So why? This recipe has worked very well in the past, why not now? How do I fix the problem?

Thanks for your help!

Ann
