Gift from Brazil?

OK, a co-worker is going to Brazil and he owes me BIG TIME!!!

What should I ask him to bring back?? (Flying, so something that will go through customs without problems).

Juliana - Your best course of action would be to contact the customs department in your state and ask them what restrictions apply to the importation of live plants from Brazil. You may even be able to look it up on the web. I don't know what the import requirements are like in your country but I do know they are very strict here in Australia. Having said that, we need to remember that these restrictions are there for a purpose, and that is to prevent the introduction of noxious plants, or worse still any insects or diseases they may be harbouring. "Second thing I heard is that even Italy is shipping stone to China to finish. They ship big hunks of stone over there and they cut and finish and ship it back. Lots of jobs in jep because of it in Italy. Please correct if wrong" I truly hope that is not the case, another thing to question when I am making a purchase for the next project As far as the quality thing goes, all you need to do is take a look at a high end Italian kitchen cabinet, car, furniture etc...the level of quality in the finishes is second to none (German being a very close second) in my opinion at least I think if you look up average pay for a factory worker in China compared to say Italy, Germany, USA...it will be pretty obvious that it is a huge economic advantage to ship things to China to have them processed.

I've got it, too, is available, but because of expensive gas, I do hippeastrum it can not stand until warmer weather. I empathize with you in relation to health and wish recovery. I'm likin' coffee....alot! Chocolate is good, but I'm not a (gasp!) big chocolate person.

I do believe DH would have a problem with either the soccer player OR cabana boy. And we don't have a pool or soccer field anyway. :-)

Seriously, colored stones, topaz, tourmaline, emeralds are all very inexpensive in Brazil. I think he might be amazed what $20 will buy on the beach!...And the shops as you get off the plane..

Oh, coffee - their Brazilian Bourbon Santos, it's considered their finest coffee. A coworker brought some back for me a few years ago, and now it's all I drink.

When I was there I bought bags of coffee at a regular old grocery store. It was inexpensive and fabulous.

Brazil is known for their leather goods. I'd ask for a new pocketbook. Too bad someone else can't buy shoes for you. I got some leather sandals that have lasted for years.

The other thing I got there and love is a sarong-type wrap. I bought it from someone on the beach in Rio (I love to say that!). I think it cost $7 US. The women there wear it wrapped around their waist to go to the beach, unwrap it and use it as a beach "towel" to lie on, then re-wrap it when it's time to go. You don't see people going to the beach carrying chairs, umbrellas, coolers, buckets, shovels, boogie boards like we do here.

I had a brazilian foreign exchange student once, she brought coffee and it was very good.

How about a wooden cutting board or bowl made from Brazilian cherry? It's a lovely wood...

Coffee....just your average ground coffee from a grocery store is fabulous Pialo. Also a sangria spoon....a long ice tea looking wooden spoon with a larger flatish end than a ice tea spoon.

I think I'll need to stick with something "safe" for a nerdy type engineer to pick out for me that doesn't really know me all that well on a personal level (wish he was a foodie).

Coffee is good.
Wood items.
Maybe chocolate.

I'm pretty darned picky about my pocketbook/handbag options so that won't work (wish I could go pick my own!!).

It's really more of a joke than anything. He always wants stuff done at the last minute. I finished some things for him ahead of schedule and he sent a "WOW, that was fast" email. I wanted to respond with "Yeah, now you can bring me back ______".
