Remember those hangers 20 years ago where you put 5 items on, and then it hangs down straight to take up less room? I see they're out again, on infomercials. Do you think they really work? I've never known anyone who had them the first time.

I love Huggable Hangers. They really do take up less room than the plastic ones.

I'm with jasdip. Come on folks, give us some hints. I've read the organizing forum and those folks just make me tired. Once I retired I stopped buying very many clothes. I haven't bought new shoes in a long time. I figured if it worked (clothes, shoes) yesterday, it will work today!!

The best tip I ever received was to get rid of clutter. It really helps. This tip will probably make you tired too ~~giggle~~ I made a notebook listing where everything is stored. It was a lot of work, but I no longer have to look everywhere for things. I only have to look in the notebook. It is a little trouble to add to the list and take from the list when things are purchased or removed.

I just put everything back where I got it from, and regularly purge things I don't use. How can the closet get messy?

I bought some of the storage cubes that come in black or white (open at the back). They are on top of the shelf, and I stack my sweatshirts in them. I'm not sure if you can picture it. It has one shelf in the middle, so it gives me 2 storage areas. They can be stacked on top of one another as well.

If you haven't worn it in a year, throw it away or give it away.

If you bring in a new something, an old something has to go. That helps it not grow into a monster.

I also have 2 of those cardboard chests of drawers in my closet, one holds purses and mittens/gloves/hats and the other has shoes that I rarely wear. I have a shoe rack that holds all my flip flops, clogs, sneakers and slippers, and I have that underneath the pants/slacks that are folded over a hanger. All my long things are hung at the back (I have a walk-in closet and the shelves/rods are L-shaped.) Sweaters and big bags and jeans are on the top shelf along with bed pillows that I rarely use. And I have a rack on the wall that I can hang a few things on, like my robe, pajamas, belts, etc.

Organized? A closet is supposed to be organized? Ok...about the only thing I do, is put all the empty hangers in one spot when I take clothes off them. Then I just have to grab them when I am doing laundry, instead of filtering thru the clothes. Oh, and I have 3 laundry baskets, all labeled, so I don't have to sort laundry either.

I'm just like Vicki LV, in that I just move the hangers to one area, and take them out when I do laundry. I have a big walk in closet too. Long rods on both sides and shelves above. On one side I have all my everyday T shirts/sweat shirts. Shoes on a rack, some on the floor, and some in a box. Next garage sale most of them will go into it. On the other side I have my church/dressier clothes. Luggage is under that. Bags up above, on one side, and my red hats and purses above on the other.

I agree with going through your closet at least once a year to get rid of clothes, etc., you haven't worn or used. Donate it to your local Goodwill or Salvation Army or women's shelter. Arrange your clothes by season and color. This will make it easier to keep track of things and visually "cleans" your closet.
One item that really improved the use of space was a shoe cube that I got at Home Depot. It's made of melamine and is about 4' high by 2' deep by 3' wide. I secured it to the back left wall and it holds 20 pairs of shoes neatly. I also store items on the top of it.

Huggable Hangers are AWESOME! Just having them encourages me to keep my clothes neat. I also have hooks in my closet which are perfect for hanging up a robe, pajama pants, etc. And a shoe cubby for shoes...not that I have many, maybe a dozen pairs. But they are dream shoes (to me) - Born, Clarks, Asics. ;)

One of the things my mother did was when she took off a garment,it got checked for repairs like hem coming unsewn, etc, then buttoned or zipped up and put on a hanger. I have a bad habit of throwing clothes across a chair until I get "time" to hang them up. So my tip is to hang up things as soon as you take them off or bring them home from the store.

Oh...what a good question! I'm hoping we have some really organized people that share some wonderful closet tips with us. I have a walk in closet and lots of shelving but it seems the more room I have, the less organized it can become. I guess my main tip for keeping my closet under control is to weed out my clothing as often as I can. If I don't wear it, then I try and take it to Goodwill. I out two bags of clothing in my car yesterday to drop off.

Mine is not organized- I am gonna get some of those hangers! My problem is a certain little black calico kitty who feels the need to pull things out of the little cupboard that is built inside and of course climb my clothes to the top of the closet to knock all the sweats down. Sigh..

My advice to save money, is to sign up with your local Freecycle. I've received a lot of useful things for free.

My advice to end clutter and keep your closet organized is NOT to sign up with Freecycle. I can't say I don't need that, when it's free! LOLOL

I hang all jeans/slacks on one side and all tops on the other with a dress or two on the end. Tops (which I have the most of) are hung by color with white/offwhite/light tan in one area, yellow, pink/peach/orange/red, darker tans/rust/brown, greens/blues/blacks.

My husband and I share a closet and his side and my side are separated by a hanging shoe holder which has compartments for shoes, purses, ect.

I keep the empty hangers in one spot, moving them as I take the clothing off of them.

We have a second closet where we store out of season clothing, some on hangers and some on those big covered, rectangular tubs on the floor. Laundry baskets for dirty clothes sit on top of the tub lids.

That's pretty much it, I think. We both have folded clothing in dressers as well. Mostly underwear, socks, gardening and camping clothes (old raggedy stuff).

Huggable Hangers. They are the best. I've had some of ours for many years, and they just do not wear out. Purchased in one color (mine are tan), hung facing the same direction, they really do make a closet look better and roomier.

I use tiered shoe racks and have only shoes and a few boxes on the floor. Everything else is on hangers. If I buy something new, something else has to go.

I got into the habit of keeping my walk-in closet tidy when I was getting up at 5:45 a.m. every day for work, and couldn't stand fussing through a messy place. It takes only a minute or two each day to put everything back in its place.
