Well...it's my first time on this forum. My husband and I went through their warranties words by words and noticed something : "However, all bare or unprotected wood surfaces (such as door frames) on all steel and fiberglass Products (note: including any bare or unprotected wood surfaces used or exposed by builders, contractors, dealers or distributors on or in conjunction with the Products) should be primed and painted or stained and top coated within the lesser of 2 weeks of installation or exposure to weather." So does it mean that we need to paint over the hinge location? who paint the hinge area before installing the hinges? NO ONE does that. Anyway, we end up with PlastPro door and we are very happy with it. Plus, their door doesn't have the ugly screw hole around the glass like the old door.

Thanks for the information. The install is a full frame replacement and includes haul away of the door. We were leaning towards the factory painting because of the smooth finish. I have a Mastercraft door going into my garage that has the same type of finish. It is 6v years old and looks brand new. I did look at the Provia too. Just seemed like overkill for the spot where I am installing. The location where we are installing the door only is used during the summer, is well protected, and cant bee seen from front or back of house. I really wanted natural light for the laundry room.

My opinion Therma Tru would be the lowest I would go on the food chain. I would seriously consider Provia at the very least for your front door.

Whew. Where to start. Prefinishing is not something that is always done by the factory. Many times it's just a off-the-shelf product applied in a controlled environment, nothing more. Easily something you or any painter could do almost as well, if not better [i.e. no thinning] I work for a distributor and a local painter does our prefinishing, something we charge a handsome fee for. If I was finishing a steel door and trying to do the best job possible, it would go to a body shop, and I'm fairly sure they could do a good job on fiberglass too. Harvey should be able to provide some information on what the door was finished with, so that someone can help you re=coat it, or strip and start over. The pinkish color may simply be due to colorants that were used to arrive at the finish color, just like your local paint store uses. These come in different grades and cheaper ones, combined with the thinning may have brought you to where you are now. They may not want to tell you, as you might discover what I just said, that it's just house paint? And power washing a house with a 25% bleach solution ALONE is like buying bias ply tires. We don't do that anymore, unless you want a bad job and trouble down the line. Ask your local paint store for a good quality house wash that will do much better, be safer to use, and not risk the growth of mildew and other un-wanted results in the long term. The proof may be in what it did to your door, if that is the reason.
