What happens when the counter is filled with flour, pie dish, spices, vegetable peels, cutting board etc.

I have a "cool" gadget for keeping my recipes out of harm's way and it was pretty inexpensive. I thread a skewer through the upper cabinet pulls and use a clothespin to hold the recipe to the skewer up at eye level and out of the way of spills and fingerprints.

I saw this on a Bill Gates fantasy house thing. It was seriously cool actually, but I like the old fashioned way of dealing with my recipes I think.

Sounds like any projection TV that could be hooked up as a computer monitor could be made to do this.

The other thing I've seen is computer mounts that position the monitor just below the countertop covered by a sheet of glass. Not the most ergonomically correct, but cool.

Surely it's the same kind of thing that projects a clock face. A small version of the projector that does your power point presentation.

Easier, but much lower tech, is what I do: Print the recipe on recycled paper, and keep it in a basket (because I can't be troubled to put together a notebook). If it gets gunky, put it in the recycling. Print a new one. If someone wants the recipe pull it out of the basket. Print a new one. If I can't find it, print a new one.

How do they keep the controls of this unit from getting gunky?

The links have been some fun reads and I also loved hearing how each of you keep up with your recipes. I like getting lots of ideas and melding everything I like into something that I can use. Thank you again for your help and insight!

you can have drop-down screen for a computer.

Or you can buy that plastic recipe clip that mounts on the underside of your cabinets, and then you clip the recipe card in it.

Stuff like that projector are mostly a way to waste money, I believe. Low-tech is almost always cheaper, more reliable (I've never had a computer that didn't lose the hard drive at least once)

Like a battery-powered pepper grinder. Unless you've got dexterity problems, it's a waste of resources.

Now that I think about it, I bet the Media Center system that my DH has set up in my current kitchen could also handle recipes. He has a computer monitor in the corner of my counter and I can watch TV, videos, listen to music, watch a slideshow of photos, etc. on it.

I'm betting he could set up a recipes option for me, or if nothing else, I could save my recipes as .jpgs and put them in the photo album, then just select the one that I want and pull it up on the screen...

Recipe Projection System. Eight in 10 of those surveyed said they cook for enjoyment, and 64% do so at least several times per week. Consumers reported wanting a wireless recipe projection system that would allow them to look up a recipe online, or even say aloud what they want to cook (e.g. "beef stroganoff"), and then have the recipe projected onto a surface in the kitchen from a small cabinet-mounted device.

"Consumers reported wanting"???? What the hell kind of survey was that? One at Comdex where they showed it to some gadget junkies and asked if they wanted it?

Can you imagine having a controlled survey, Gallop Poll, type of thing where they were asking you what you wanted in your kitchen and you thought, "Gotta be able to say 'Beef Stroganoff' and have the recipe projected on the cabinet!"?

Especially considering that any old recipe is not what you need when you're cooking, but something that matches your tastes, supplies, style and skills. I've found lots of great recipes online but it takes a proper search and a lot of forward and back until one finds the right thing.

When Mo_sgal first mentioned this I thought it was for personal recipes which one has stored on one's own computer (hence, print a new one). I think what the people in the article are talking about is a Star Trek kind of thing where the computer knows exactly what you want and gives it to you right when you ask. "Computer, look in the kitchen, see what I have, and tell me how to make something fantastic." They have all these kitchen inventory sensors they're trying to market which will tie in. For those who can't remember to look and make a list before they leave for work.

I went a different route other than a projector.

I'm a programmer, and I've been redoing my kitchen in my 1900ish-1920ish house. I'll probably post pictures when I'm done on GW cause there will be some pretty unique things: weird art, grasping pot lid arms, hopefully a microfiber easy chair. I'm single, so I can pull this sort of stuff off.

Well I wanted to put in a pc for a couple reasons: music all the time, maybe watch dvds and eat, recipes and so forth. I trawled for a solution for quite awhile. I looked at all the "HOUSE OF THE FUTUUUUURE!" stuff out there and was kind of unsatisfied.

I decided to go with a HP Touchsmart. Its compact, and has a really good touchscreen. The kind you can hit with an elbow or pot handle so you don't have to get the screen dirty. It also has a wireless mouse, wireless keyboard, and remote control, but my primary kitchen use will be centered around the touchscreen.

Of course, there are no real touchscreen friendly recipe management software packages out there, so I'm creating a website to "scratch my itch". It'll be publicly available in a couple months I hope, but I won't link it at gw because of the anti spam policies.

Programming it has been a great way to relax from all the construction though. It keeps my mind off all of the minor disasters.
