That falcon has been hurt...either shot with buckshot; attacked by another falcon/predator or flew into something impenetrable. From the pattern of blood spots on his breast...I'd probably opt for buckshot. Breaks my heart to see a bird in this condition but falcons and hawks aren't always appreciated by farmers and the like.

In any case...if you frequent the area where you took this photo...keep your eyes open. Depending upon what caused his wounds...he may become unable to fend for himself...becoming more visible than is healthy for him [or perhaps dying] until any missing wing feathers fill in.

I, personally, would love any follow-up you might get regarding him. They're such beautiful birds.

Anne I believe the falcon had just finished eating something, that would explain the blood. It's a frequent visitor to the area where I took the picture and it often sits in the exact same tree and eats its kill. Usually a starling.

Oh...thanks Karen. I looked closely at all the shots you took of him and thought, perhaps, he'd just dined but his feathers were too askew. As a matter of fact...that's what first caught my attention. But you could be right. Dinner might have put up quite a battle. I did notice something blackish in the talon he had tucked up....on the right side facing him.

They sure are magnificent birds. I live in a rural area and see them once in a while here. But not often.

Here is a roadrunner I saw in Austin, TX about a month ago. That was a first for me!
