What to do with leftover Halloween candy.

I simply don't buy any candy! I turn off the porch light and hunker down. I'm a Halloween bah humbug. But for those of you who keep the jack o'lantern candles burning and still have candy left at the end of the orgy, er...evening, here are some ways to dispose, um...make use of the bounty in other desserts.

Many of these make my teeth ache but a few sound pretty yummy.

We have a local dentist who "buys back" any Halloween candy at $1 per lb. My kids usually skim off a few favorites then are perfectly happy to get rid of it.

That's a sweet deal!

The piles and aisles of candy in the stores are stunning this time of year. Mostly I'm never tempted except by the occasional mini peanut butter cup, which I find to be the perfect ratio of chocolate to peanut butter middle.

Punk. this is a delightful table. Great job stacking the plates to look like candy corn. Rolling the napkins and putting them the glasses to show the design was brilliant. Your buffet looks fantastic!! The 3 ghosts are really neat. Good idea having your DH make a shelf to replace the broken one. TJ sure looks excited for Halloween to arrive so she can go trick or treating with your DGD Rowena looks pleased as punch at all your decorating. I'm sure that's why she is laughing and winking so much. She never meant to cackle so loud that your shelf cracked. And I know she's really happy she wasn't put back in the shed. My daughter, now 20, told me last year that she just realized she likes Almond Joy -- she always thought she hated them, because they went straight to me from the trick or treat bag. She didn't realize that we were just following the tradition of each parent having "first grabs" rights for one personal favorite. Definitely the least popular "treat" in my childhood neighborhood was the "Greatest Story Ever Told" pamphlet one family gave out instead of candy. One year they taped on some root beer flavored hard candies, but even they weren't very good. I loved Chunky and of course Almond Joy best. We used to live on a street so popular for trick or treating that we went through at least 15 big bags of candy each night. When we moved just three blocks to a different street, we get so few kids -- maybe 3-6, tops -- that I can be the nice lady who gives out big Hershey bars.

I've enjoyed your stories and suggestions. Rhizo, I agree with you -- it's like a plague of locusts hitting us -- with the SUV's lined up out front coming from who knows where! Sometimes the "kids" look old enough to vote! My regret is that there isn't a good prediction of necessary quantity. Some years we have a hundred or more and run out; other years we get so few that we're left with a bunch of candy that I don't want! Here's a story though that makes opening that door to the little ones worthwhile: One Halloweed the doorbell rang; I opened the door to a little one (about 2 years or so) who said nothing -- just stood and stared at me. His dad was standing back in the shadows, otherwise the little boy was all alone. I said, "Is it trick or treat? Is that why you're standing on my porch looking like that?" The little boy said nothing, but the father stepped forward with a smile and said "sometimes he gets it and sometimes he doesn't." I gave the little boy some candy and the father started asking about my decorations and how I made them. As we were talking, I could tell the little boy was anxious to get on to more trick or treating. Finally he stepped forward and waved his hand in a sort of solute and said, "Well, Merry Christmas!" and turned and marched on. I said "and Merry Christmas to you too!" His dad rolled his eyes as if to say "like I said, sometimes he gets it and sometimes he doesn't." When I closed the door, my husband said "did I hear you wish someone a Merry Christmas", as if I had completely lost my senses! We laugh about that sweet little boy and re-tell the story often.

I posted the dentist link on my Facebook...what a great idea! However, ours will probably go to the shelter for battered women and their children here in town. They have multiple fridges and freezers and take all sorts of things to save for use, including by the way, any excess produce/orchard fruit that would go to waste. I'm sure there are such shelters in many of our communities. Not to be holier-than-anyone-else, though.........likely, we'll eat our share!!!! :D

We don't get many Trick or Treaters here so I make sure I buy something I like...it doesn't go to waste.

Barnmom, I wish we could trade abodes for the night. I love Halloween and have never lived anywhere where I could give out candy.

We have a buyback thing too, for unopened bags. Goes to the military, I think.

I have always given it to DH to take to school to hand out to his students to--well I was going say to reward good behavior but that doesn't happen often with his group (EH)--bribe them.

Great idea! DG's will have had 4 Halloween events by Monday night. J said he was going to donate his candy. Mom approves, but doesn't know where this 7 yr old heard about it! We know and love Operation Gratitude!

We love Halloween! We want the kids to come to the door. We deck the porch out in all it's goulish Halloween decor, give out King Size candybars and love the costumes the kids and teens wear. If there are any candybars left over, we keep a few for ourselves and then bring the rest into work. Our trick or treat night is Sunday. We will see how many kids we get with the 3-5 inches of snow the weathermen are predicting for Saturday night! Happy Halloween everyone, NancyLouise

we also have Trick or Treat Saturday....If the weather is nice....as it's supposed to be....I can get a lot. I only bought for 100....but know that I will give several mini bars to kids I know....maybe I better buy more....
I try not to have anything but chocolate left over!!....best I go buy some more of those mini packs of M and M's!!

There is a dentist here who is collecting left over candy and they are packing it up to send to the soliders along with the tolietries that are sent. I thought that was a really good idea.

DH eats as much as he can and I take the rest to work. And add it to the piles of candy other people have brought.

This is the beginning of the season of holiday food in the office. From now till Christmas there will be food for the taking hanging around in the kitchen at work. Oh boy.

Leftover?

I know now its a race to get the chocolate Halloween candy on clearance. I break up chocolate bars, Snickers bars and such and use them in Christmas cookies. The wrapper color doesn't matter then.
