Found a treasure trove of recipes.

Been emptying shelves because of a roof re do....if I didn't empty it likely would fall!!

Anyhow...I found cookbooks from several small churches...and several club cook books from my mother dating to the early 1960's.

Most of the small church cookbooks are nothing I would even consider....lots of recipes using a can of soup or a packet of some sort of flavoring or mix....but the desserts are fabulous!

Then I started with the Penny Cookbook from the Woman's club of 1963...OMG!! Pages of really interesting molded salads, NOT using Jello...but things like melted baking chocolate and gelatin....and one I will post when I have more time for a "mousse" featuring Brie, leiderkrants, blue cheese and whipping cream and gelatin....saus to serve with pear wedges! Sounds good to me! And another for mustard ring.....which is pretty much whipped cream and dry mustard and gelatin....says to serve in a ring mold with peaches??? Not me!!

I'll try not to lose it again and post recipes from time to time. They were all great cooks and not a can of soup to be found. One woman was German and she entered some really good sounding recipes for German specialties.

Anyhow I had fun!

Did you ever spend a day putting away 40 books? LOL!

Lucky you! Yep, I could spend hours putting away books, but having to look through each one I picked up, then reading a bit here and there.......easily a whole day's fun.

Hmmmmmm......whipped cream, dry mustard, and gelatin.....interesting.....

I have few spiral bound fund-raiser cookbooks in my shelf. I am amused by the one from my little sister's days in Tucson Youth Symphony. It must have a record number of beef stroganoff recipes. They included each individual submission. The recipes cames from parents of the orchestra kids, I suppose. I look for these little booklets when I'm in a used bookstore. They are sometimes real gems.

The original plant, raised from a cutting given to me by a member of our rose society, was rooted 10 years ago. At year 7, it had completely engulfed the 15 foot pear tree. I had to cut it down completely to the original trunk. At the time of drastic pruning, some of the canes were 20+ feet long. I just went out to visualise the are it used to occupy and measured it - it's about 20 foot wide by 15 feet deep. The estimated height was 15-20 feet. So, it was a complete monster. In the 3 years since I cut it back, the remaining trunk threw out enormous canes, and the result are trusses of blooms the sizes of which I have never seen before. Basically, the description is that of the growth habit of Rosa filipes "Kiftsgate" - i.e., not for the faint of heart. And do keep those nitrogen rich fertiser well away from its roots!

I'd copy them and then proceed with your original idea - during chats with relatives you send them to you might come across the ideal person who would really treasure the originals and who might have someone to eventually pass them on to. I'm very sentimental and it sounds like you are too, but not everyone is. We have a couple of recipes scratched out on the backs of envelopes and things like that from my grandmother, but that's it. My sister actually made my mother write out some of her basic recipes - gravy, meatballs, alia oglio, etc., by hand and give us all a set so we'd have them in her handwriting because of those few scraps being all we have from our mother's mother. Anyway, I think that's a great idea, and even tho you don't have someone to hand them down to, someone who gets the copies as they're passed along might contact you and want the originals. At least that way you know they'll be treasured and passed along and not end up being thrown away or lost or damaged. And the notes your mom added to them will make them even more special. But when you get right down to it, the recipes themselves and the joy they'll bring to people who prepare them, then share them with their families and friends are the most important part. But like anything, having something original, written in the person's hand, always makes it more special. Lisa

This is not my oldest but it is one that I do treasure because it is practical and used everyday. It is a 30" laboratory sink from a university that was built in 1970. When they were renovating the labs, I got one of those sinks and it is now my refurbished "farmsink" that holds a prominent place in my kitchen. Another one is my large steamliner pressure cooker which is still going strong. Bought this in 1970 from an old woman who was leaving the island. Never had to service this vintage and cooks up a storm during the holiday seasons. There was another tall one that I had, can't remember the brand name but it had four stacked "trays" that would allow you to cook products of varied cooking time at the same time. That I gave to my mother when I was leaving home. It was too big for me then. Lastly, my grandmother had a brass plant pot that every weekend, as children, we had to clean it with burnt charcoal and lime juice. I could not wait to grow up to get the younger ones to do the cleaning. One day I went to a garage sale and found one just like it. I bought it because now I can buy silvo or brasso :). I love old things especially if they bring back memories. They must also be unique. Just my 2 cents.

Here's the pic I just took under lights at night to give an idea of the grouping. They're stacked by different designs &/or colorways. While they're neither my style or color choice, they're quite graphic & dynamic, it'll be a BOLD something, whatever I make. Thanks ToolGranny for clearing that up early re Quilt Forum. Latif, these seem too small to worry abt grain, I can't pull them to check since they're so small, they'd skew badly w/ that long bias edge. Here's a clear example of what I meant earlier abt maybe using the QST for the added advantage of being able to alternate them directionally. I realized later my pic under that comment didn't match what I said. Well Caroline, if I'm any example, I do hope someone is working to finish your partial projects. If I can match the black I might try to alternate blocks of the prints w/ black panels as suggested (thx). Guess I've got some time to think abt it. But I welcome all ideas Gang, thx!

When our Friends of the Library group has their annual used book sale, we get about 70,000 books donated and the volunteers get first choice of them. Whenever I'm working before the sale and we get a particularly heavy load of old cookbooks, I always volunteer to sort them and have found some real treasures.

What fun! I love rediscovering old cookbooks that have been put away for years. You are lucky you got them all put away again, I would still be reading them LOL.

I just love those old church cookbooks, I would love to be sitting at your kitchen table (or floor) browsing through them! Funny thing is a couple of years ago a friend gave me a copy of the cookbook from her rather 'upscale' community and I thought - wow, this is really going to be quite a collection cause these gals are the cream of the crop of entertaining - and LOL, they were the usual collection of "cream of" soup recipes! (There were a few terrific recipes scattered throughout.)

I've got lots of those old cookbooks, some are real gems. It's fun to go through some once in a while, I've got some from churches, different groups and many Junior League of..... (insert city name) from all over the country.

I still like to make a molded salad occasionally, I even use Jello, always liked it. Haven't used a can of cream soup in years though...

the sauce with pears sounds good to me, too.

Looking forward to some of these interesting recipes, Linda. I actually love to go through my stuff like that...haven't done it in a loooong time. Always seem to think there's something I "have" to be doing, instead of something I'd "like" to be doing...sigh.

I like the church, women's clubs cookbooks the best and look for them when we travel and I've rarely been disappointed.

"mousse" featuring Brie, leiderkrants, blue cheese and whipping cream and gelatin.

Are you going to make this first? It sure sounds interesting though. I googled leiderkrants(z) and it says it is similar to limburger cheese.

Oh, I want the one with brie and blue cheese too! My brother and I both love those and I try to make a special appetizer for Christmas when he is over: that would be a real conversation piece.
