Local NJ Cabinet Info

Hi all. We are just getting started on a kitchen reno, and so far you've all made me sound a lot smarter (especially to my husband). I'm definitely going to have a lot of questions, and I'm hoping to find some extra help here.

My first question - has anyone worked with Builder's General in Edison NJ? The first contractor we had in suggested working with them for cabinets. When we went to their store, they suggested HomeCrest cabinets would be best to suit our needs. We don't need enough bells & whistles to warrant custom cabs, but HC offers some options that would help make our kitchen semi-custom.

So, do you know anything about Builder's General, or any other kitchen places we should be checking out in the central NJ area? And how do HomeCrest cabinets hold up? I'm am totally clueless (aside from what I've already read/researched on here) and I don't want to be taken advantage of.

I should also add that I have 2 young children (2 & 1) so we durability and affordability are our keys factors.

Am I correct that Edison NJ is not too far from the PA border (looks like about 2 1/2 hours to Lancaster, Meyerstown areas?) If so, I would strongly suggest you look into some of the custom cabinet makers in Lancaster PA or the general area. You may be surprised at the fact that really custom cabinets from a custom local cabinet maker are both less expensive and better quality (especially as far as being durable for your kids).

I know that a lot of people here have worked w/ Oxford Cabinet Company. Craftlady (not sure if that is the exact right user name?) just had her kitchen done by Blue Mountain Woodworking. I am getting my kitchen done by Dutch Wood in Meyerstown.

I would do a search for threads related to those cabinet makers and think about paying them a visit if you are even close to being w/in the driving range of them. My custom cabinet order was way less than it would have been had I gone w/ a "big box" store and I am getting ALL the bells and whistles now w/ my cabinets too.

You can also try Wholesale Kitchen Cabinets in Perth Amboy. I am not at the stage yet to shop, but I plan on checking this place out. Ive heard theyre good. Also 3.5% tax.

I live in central NJ and had Carrier Infinity ICS furnace and Infinity 17 condensers intalled in my house at the end of April. First thing I recommend is requesting a quote to upgrade to a Infinity condenser. The rebate is $1000 vs. $400. I found after rebate it was cheaper to go with the Infinity set up, plus you will have a two stage condenser which is great for removal of humidity. There are two rebates available from NJ. WarmAdvantage and CoolAdvantage. The WarmAdvantage pays $400 for a 92% efficiency furnace with a variable speed motor. The Infinity ICS (95%) qualifies. The Cooladvantage pays either $100 or $150 depending on the EER and SEER value. Unfortunately the Infinity 17 does not make the numbers with all coil combinations. You will have the verify this. The Performance 15 actually does a little bit better with EER and SEER ratings, but it is deceiving since the Peformance is a one stage condenser and the Infinity has two stages. If the conderser does meet the required numbers, the contractor must submit a Manual J and Manual S calculation with the application. Several contractors I talked to did not want to do this. They said it was "too much paper work". The contractor receives $100 for submitting the application. I am not aware of any $5000 rebate from the state of NJ.

Hyjenist, you're cabinets are awesome!! nyrgirl, Based on the quote I got from dutchwood, they're out of your price range. For what it's worth, I may be in the minority, but I wasn't impressed with them. I loved my cabinet makers and I'd think they'd go to Staten island. They don't subcontract, make all of the cabinets in their shop (it's in the back of their showroom and you can take a tour), get the doors from the Amish in PA and seem to meet all of the requirements you listed, plus they have fantastic weights requirements for the drawer hardware. One wall had two cabinets, upper and lower which were either 24 inch or 30 inch. This wall also had a fridge. Another wall had a 30 inch cooktop and two small cabinets (15 or 18 inch) with uppers on the side of the cooktop The island was about 5 foot and included a sink/dishwasher. There were very few upper cabinets and no pantry in this design. The design was hand drawn and when I went home I realized that the wall with the cooktop was about 1 foot smaller then the design so it would not have even fit. It did not warrant a $2000 retainer which was going to be the next step. Instead I am ordering Brookhaven cabinets without an inset.

Talk to their past clients, but don't get names from Lidel Homes or Shant Gueyikian. The names you would get from them may be partial. Talk to the local building department to get their views.

I used Builder's General in Little Silver, NJ and Homecrest Cabinets for my kids' bathroom. I had a very good experience with Builder's General. I think Homecrest Cabinets are considered more of a stock cabinet. While they have upgrades like all plywood, soft close drawers, etc.., by the time you add in all the extras, you might as well purchase a semi-custom cabinet like Kraftmaid. My cabinets for the bathroom have held up well and still look nice after seven years, but I'm not so sure how they would have held up in a kitchen environment. Try pricing out a semi-custom cabinet brand to see how it compares. Good luck!
