By wicker I presume you mean something like a straw hat. Doesn't really matter... you can use acrylic, spray acrylic, enamel, spray enamel... just about any paint you'd use on furniture. You can hand paint, or use spray paint. Just depends on whether you are painting a design or coloring the whole exterior of the hat. Either way, be sure to put down a protective layer under the hat as you paint because the paint will probably seep through the holes in the material. Let it dry well before wearing! If the hat material is flexible, just be sure to NOT put on too thick a coat of paint or it will crack. Less is better... If spray painting, use several LIGHT coats, rather than one thick one. Apply just enough to get good color coverage. If you have further questions, be sure to post back!

I posted this same question on another forum that I frequent and low and behold Kmart of all places has some wonderful resin wicker furniture that looks almost exactly like what I was looking at for 3/4's the price. I ordered a full size sofa, 2 chairs, coffee table and 2 end tables. They are heavy, almost the same color and while the cushions aren't what I showed (they will be yellow) I will add colorful pillows and will be great. I am thrilled and they are going to be delivered in less then 2 weeks for everything! I've got some power washing to do and then some painting and it's going to look terrific. I have to hold off a bit because of weather but I'm excited. I've been using old furniture out there for the last 4 years and this will be a fresh new start along with all the new landscaping that I worked on last season in the backyard (worked by behind off!!!). We are building a new house and I want to re-purpose some old and some new wicker/rattan pieces. We are doing a tropical beach house type theme. I am thinking about using the Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, and then aging with the dark wax. Does anyone have any experience with painting this type of furniture with chalk paint or any other type of paint? I do not want it to look shiny and new... more of white washed, sun and wind worn... I have tried many times to upload a pic of the pieces. It keeps telling me it is larger than 5000K I have changed the pixels down to 200 (smaller than the "small" at 640), but it still won't upload. grrrr. Thanks for reading!

DO NOT pressure wash the wicker - too fragile. Just wet it with a garden hose, spray it with a cleaner and let it it about 20 min and then rinse and allow to dry THOROUGHLY before painting it. Anne, if your paint flaked it was probably because you used an acrylic spray and someone had previously used oil - it will always spray then. Spraying wicker is far easier than painting it by hand - SO hard to get in all the bits and pieces. As for color...what else will be in the room? I love white wicker but it must be in the right place to not disappear. I love wicker painted black or Meisel green. I tried to find a color that was similar to this but mine turned out more turquoise but I still like it and it's not worth changing.
