Gorgeous sink! Arlosmom has a vintage sink like that, although I believe she has cabinetry underneath it. You might take a look at what she's done with her flanking cabinetry?

I also love the idea of open shelving, and if you search the forum there are lots of threads on kitchens with no upper cabinets (i.e., open shelving). :)

I downloaded this from the web a while ago...don't remember from where. I think the photo was taken in the 1920s. It doesn't have cabinets flanking the sink, but I thought it might be helpful to you anyway. I really like your idea of the side cabinets looking like hutches. How deep is your sink from front to back? In installing mine, the contractor pulled it forward and built a box behind the backsplash so that the front curved edge of the sink apron protrudes past the cabinets.

LOVE the sink.

One of my favorite images from last year was the August cover of World of Interiors, which featured a sink like that in a New Orleans bargeboard house with an extremely vivid color scheme and austere interior.

I think you're on the right track of making sure it does not look too boxed in. The cabinets should look freestanding, even if they're not.

I have seen things like an open shelved bottom (almost like a dresser with the drawers taken out) for the bottom, that you just slide pots and things in, put some things in large flat baskets. (Or some open, some drawers/cabinets.)
Then open shelving on top.

This LOOKS really nice. But I can hear people freaking out all the way through my computer ...

I have also seen people just but a little cart, or a wooden box on casters under the sink, or a stool to sit on while they do the dishes. You obviously like the style with the legs, so I don't think you want/need cabinets under it, right?

It's a nice, open, country look. I don't think you should cram stuff around it and suffocate it. Incorporate some air into the design, as arlosmom illustrates.

So if you did hutches, I would give them plenty of open spaces. Or maybe just one hutch and some shelves or something.

Also, you didn't ask, and maybe you can make it work, but I'm not sure travertine goes with the rest of the scheme you've laid out. But don't let me stop you!

Growlery I was planning on putting bushell baskets under the sink (similar to your idea) so I definitely want to keep the area under the sink open. I came up with the idea of getting this farmhouse sink as a second sink in our new side entry (mudroom/pantry) as a drop off point for when my husband comes in with his veggies. (He's an avid gardener.) As much as I love all the baskets of veggies, they can be inconvenient when dropped off at the main kitchen sink. So this should work well.

I was thinking of having one of the side cabinets designated for my husband's wine (yes he is Italian). He always has a bottle or two on the kitchen counter and I'm tired of it. So I thought I would make one of the side hutches a place for his wine and glasses, etc.

I do have this hutch and I would love to incorporate it in my mudroom/pantry. I'm not sure yet where to put it. Maybe next to the sink??
It is 3' wide. My hesitation is that I thought the hutch legs and sink legs might not look good side by side?

I think the travertine will work well. It has chiseled edges and is very interesting. I didn't fill in the holes (just sealed it) so the look is very country. It looks like a stone floor, which it is, not fancy or polished. And IT HIDES THE DIRT LIKE NO OTHER FLOOR I'VE EVER SEEN!

When you enter this new side entrance this stairway is to the right, a separate laundry room is to the left and the mudroom/pantry straight ahead.

Now that I see the hutch you have, with the travertine, I can see it all together!

I see what you mean a bit about legs: legs: legs. It's a little visually unbalanced.

But you can certainly use the hutch somewhere in the room, maybe even in a flanking position if you balance it right, visually speaking. You might even take some photos, get out your glue and scissors and make a little collage to get a sense of what it would look like.

Don't give up on that sink! It looks like a great one for vegetables.
