Do you also paint the insides of the kitchen cabinets?

This summer I would like to start painting my dark walnut cabinets white. I am in a dilema, about what to do with the insides.Part of me wants to paint, another part of me says 'Do I really need to'.

Those of you , who have done this project, what is your opinion.? Does it really look that bad , if left unpainted.The insides are ofcourse dark in color. I know beauty is a personal thing and everyone has a different answer, but I will go with the majority.

Did someone do something creative, like maybe glue white wallpaper to the insides as an alternate way.

I didn't paint the insides, and really don't regret it at all...I have tons of cabinets (well, not tons, but it seemed that way while I was sanding, priming, painting them!) It took my whole week of vacation, and I was glad to be done with it. Now, some people are bothered by that...one of my dear friends is frantic about everything inside her cabs being perfect, so she would freak if she saw that i didn't "finish!" But I'm not worried about stuff I can't see. I just laid down the loose contact paper for my dishes and never give it a second thought.
Do you think it would bother you not to paint them? Then again, you could always go back and do them later on...good luck with your painting!
BTW...painting my cabs was the best idea I ever had...I love them now!

I painted the inside of my cabinets when I was updated a house to sell. I will never do that again. Getting in and out of those cabinets to paint the interior was a pain in the you know what. Yes they looked beautiful when done. My cabinets were very dark walnut inside and out and I was afraid the contrast would be too great. If I was in that situation again, I'd leave the interior with the original finish.

The command clear hooks were the best bet for my original project. Here's a pic: And here you can see the open drawer MW with the easily accessible lids. Then because I had extra hooks, I put some on the seldom opened corner susan doors. Saved a whole drawer's worth of space! I hadn't seen the command clear hooks before this project. Once again, thanks GW!

I used Cabinet Coat. You can special order it from any Ace hardware store. I researched the web extensively and heard nothing but praises for this paint. I originally wanted to use oil paint for its durability, but wanted water-based for ease of application. I chose Cabinet Coat because it is supposed to give a very durable finish, but doesn't yellow as oil does. So far I am extremely pleased with its nice finish and durability and plan to use it not only for my cabinets, but for all the woodwork in my house as I go along.

We are having custom cabinets made and we're not painting the inside of the cabinets. It's not to save money either, it's the same price either way. We are having the underside of the cabinets painted on the uppers, but the inside will be prefinished maple. The cabinet maker and others say that the finish is more durable over time rather than painted. One cabinet that will have frosted glass. The cabinet maker said if we had clear glass he would definately recommend painting the inside, but otherwise he does not recommend painting them inside.

My coffee bar was unfinished cabinet from Lowes. It is actually made very well, and the inside is clear coated. I have had my cabinet 3 yrs, and I am still very happy with it. Drawers have nice slides and work well, and the doors have hidden hnges and also work very well. I only had to paint the exterior. If you are painting the exterior of your cabinets, please make sure you sand them well, and prime them with a good bonding sealing primer and use paint that is especially formulated for cabinets, so you also get durability. The brand of cabinet paint, I used, only came in semi gloss, but, it isnt a real glossy semi gloss. So far, not a single nick or chip, and I have many great grand kids, I babysit, and they shimmy up the cabinets to reach things from the upper cabinets on a regular basis. I also have a beagle, that is known to stand up on his hind legs and check out what might be sitting on the countertops (until he gets caught doing so, lol) Your kitchen sounds like it will look very nice.

we went from a dark stain to painting the cabinets white, only thing on the inside was the doors, it is just a preference, the cabinet is closed the majority of the time

Just finished the last cabinet on the inside. Went from very dark stain to a oak look with paint and stain. Just painted the inside 2 coats, 5 minutes each time, no stain on inside of cabinets, wait till next day and do 3 coats of polycrilic, waited three days and put everything back.

The polycrilic dries really hard so the paint never gets scuffed or scratched.

The only time you need to refinish the interior is if there are glass doors exposing it.

Hendricus, Could you post photos of your cabs? I am planning a very similar project and also trying to decide about painting the inside (am going from a dark dated finish to a medium-tone wood look with paint and stain/glaze). Thanks!
