Poll:If cost wasn't an issue which cabinet paint would you choose

I'm having mudroom cabinets and bench built by a cabinet maker and I want to make sure I get the best paint job(durability and looks). I've searched this forum and several paints get good reviews. So, in your opinion, if cost wasn't an issue which paint would you choose to paint UNFINISHED cabinets an off-white color? My cabinet maker says he can spray them as well, is this recommended?

The paints I've seen referenced the most include Cabinet Coat, Ace Cabinet paint, BM Aura, BM satin impervo, SW pro-classic.

Which would you use(feel free to mention others not on the list)?

Fine Paints of Europe is probably best followed by BM Aura. Yes, spraying is the preferred method.

EXACTLY what PG said.

FPE is pretty much King-of-the-hill!

C2 would be another good choice...

Make SURE they're sanded AND primed.
You WILL be able to tell the difference!

I'm with rhome in tossing B first. There are things I like about A and C, but I think I'd have problems working with either. If non-cooking traffic is a major concern, A could be a problem, especially if you are having to carry pots of boiling water or pans with hot grease across that end of the kitchen to get to the sink. That layout needs a prep sink in my mind and the island would make more sense than giving up limited counter space in the cooking area. Also, make sure you'd have room to get into the corner cabinet -- the dog dish and shelves look like they are too close. The fridge is too far removed in C -- I'd want to put in some fridge drawers near the range so you have a tight work zone there and let the large fridge store food to the table and extras. But that would take away storage for pots and pans unless you want them under the top of the work table. Without it, I'd have a very hard time working in that kitchen. If it were me, I'd keep working on DH and working with mock ups of the layout (tape, boxes, move tables and chairs, take notes about every move you make in the kitchen during the day -- and try to walk through planning a big dinner party, birthday party, etc. I think the sink island and shallow storage idea or the prep sink in the island give you your best use and function of that space. Is DH afraid of the cost or just saying it can't be done? I moved gas to my island when we bought the house, then capped that off and ran water and electricity to the island to have a prep sink when we remodeled. We have a slab foundation, no basement and a bathroom above. That aren't a lot of arrangements more limited than that and I used to think it was not a possibility for us, but we did it and it wasn't that expensive (about $500 for running lines under the slab). We got so much out of it too. We also closed off a doorway (we had 3 going to the driveway and garage along one wall of the kitchen and breakfast room) and gained a hutch with refrigerator drawers and and espresso machine that has turned out to be a popular favorite -- but we almost didn't do it because we thought it would be too difficult and expensive. The cost wasn't that great (spent more in cabinets and the fridge drawers). The challenge came when both reusing and matching brick were more difficult than we expected. Instead of a brick wall, we put in a faux barn door that ties in with the garage door. There are ways to work around many things that are less trouble and expense than you might think. I'd at least ask those questions before you close doors on possibilities.

Satin Impervo or their Dulamel are the best you can get with out going to a two part system or conversion varnish, neither of which many painters will apply in your home. As with any paint job the final product is most dependant on the prep work.

Oh gosh. Yes, I am sick of choosing stuff :-) And I haven't seen a granite I just "love". Maybe I'm just not meant to find the granite love of my life (heck, I'm lucky to have the human one!). Now, I have seen some granites I'd love to have on the island, but when it comes to an all-over choice, I don't want to use them everywhere (too busy and light). I've toyed with a dark perimeter--but don't want Absolute Black--and an accent island. I've pretty much given up that idea. Hubby wants input on the granite choice but has entered his busiest time of the year at work and won't be able to go look at granites again. I need to choose next week since the cabs are going in on Monday and we're trying to meet the June 30 deadline for the tax credit. Thanks for the suggestions and the pics! What I've not done is seen these granites side-by-side, but will do so on Monday. I have seen a kitchen done in Emerald Pearl, which is where I first "found" it. The cabs are the same as mine and their wall color looks to be Blonde, also. So, to me, that was a safe choice since I've seen it done and liked it. Maybe it wasn't love at first sight, but I think we could have a long and comfortable relationship together. Thanks!

I'm not a fan of powder rooms in the mudroom with the exception of that it makes it easy access when outside. We have a bench/hooks/cubbies in ours and shoes storage, but I always consider it our one dirty area. I clean it regularly, but it is certainly not an area that I really want guests to see even though as it is in our current house all enter there anyway due to the driveway and how far the entrance is from it. I live in a southern climate, but I could see a snowy climate have some wet areas and kids is a whole other issue with keeping it picked up. When we have people over and kids running around they just leave stuff all over the floor in there as they go in and out. That is a reason I want a mudroom to contain that mess. Just flip the powder room if you're leaning towards option C. It also removes the wall that will be noisiest without doing any special noise mitigation from sharing it with the family room. Your kitchen in any of the plans does not look small or undersized. A foot in length doesn't matter as much as the efficiency of the layout matters. If you had a small kitchen then I could see that foot being an issue, but you have a good sized kitchen.

I would choose Farrow and Ball Pointing. I see it alot in English decorating magazines and it looks like the perfect cabinet and trim color. I haven't got a chance to try it yet so I don't know if it is durable.

Wow! That FPE pain is expensive!(I guess I got what I asked for) And the nearest retailer is an hour away. C2 nearest retailer in 2.5 hrs away!

My cabinet guy is really meticulous with the prep work.

So is BM Aura better than Satin Impervo for cabs? Which one is more durable and easier to clean? Which one is easier to apply?

And what is the best finish for cabinets? Satin? Semigloss? or is it personal preference?

FPE definitely, it's what I used. I used a brush, my preference.

Farrow & Ball is also excellent. Pointing is beautiful, have it on all my trim. The paint is very durable.

FPE will ship if you're a distance away from a vendor. Definitely call and ask them. They're customer service is great. F&B is also easily available online, through Cox Paints.

"Be careful what you wish for..."

Yes, it's pricey. I've had my hands in it, sampled it, and therefore used it @ home. It IS NOT normal paint.

* We're talkin' "Four Seasons Maui" vs. the Holiday-Inn kinda difference...except FPE is a little cheaper...;-)
(We were lucky enough to stay @ the Four Seasons last June)

* Your paint cost will increase SOME. So what? The added value, durability, & appearance will outweigh a few $$'s.

* Just as proof...my setup for my downstairs bath...my fave C2-One primer, and the Euroqt. of FPE Matte, which cost $45 delivered. Walls were washed with powdered Dirtex.

Is FPE that much better than F&B?

Several of the F&B colors would work beautifully in what I'm planning for my kitchen. On the other hand, I'm having a heck of a time trying to figure out the FPE color code/sample system so I can get some samples up in my house.

I really want my cabinet paint to last well so if FPE is so much better, then I guess I should keep trying with FPE? I have two little ones at home (and a middle-sized one at school) so really, time is a priority for me.

Both FPE and F&B are superlative and you won't go wrong with either one. I have both, so I know. If you're in love with an F&B color, by all means use their eggshell on your cabinets. You'll be very happy. F&B colors cannot be "copied" so don't even try. Find a color you like, and go with it.

FPE is the best paint in the world, no question about it.
But, other premium paints are pretty good too. Will you notice the difference? That depends on you and everyone is different.

FPE can color match to almost any color (I'm not familiar with the F&B line so I can't speak to that). I did a little review of my experience with FPE paint on here, but that's coming from a proficient DIYer, not a professional, and it sounds like you're having this done by a professional.

Anyway ... I'd worry more about the kind of paint than the color since most companies can color match.

Depending on what type of FPE paint, the 2.5L Eurogallon ranges from $100 to $110.
