What insulation to use?? What is your opinion
Comments (29)Advertisers love to use suggestive terms and "thermal bridging" has become one of them. This is an area of building science where you need to do some homework on your own. Absolutely! However, The link I provided is not advertising. It is a Province of Manitoba site advising consumers/builders on some aspects of its nearly 40-year old R2000 homebuilding standards that have constantly evolved as benchmarks for "healthiness, environmental impact and energy efficiency." .... It seems misleading to use the term "thermal bridge" for wood when it has a thermal resistance 300 times greater than that of metal. .... The term is often applied to light wood framing exterior envelopes in a manner that seems to imply that wood studs have the insulation value of solid metal or no value at all. The term thermal bridging is consistently used byEnergy Star, Building America and leading building scientists, such as Dr. Joseph Lstiburek here where he refers to thermal bridging through wood framing on a cathedral roof reducing the R value approximately 20%. (And that's even with a layer of 1" XPS.) If the example of thermal bridging in the first page is a 20% reduction in the effective R value, that is R16. The range given, I presume, is the result of whole wall evaluations. By contrast, using a recommended method of averaging R values, for the R2000 Manitoba example, I get a value of R12.5 whatever theoretical wall size I slot in. Just adding together materials with various R factors does not yield equal field performance due to such factors as air leakage and convection currents. Indeed, studies show that real world installation of fiberglass batts is often way below ideal. And the ASTM testing, from which "standard" R values are derived, doesn't account for wind and moisture. The site moves on to solutions. As I read it, the examples on the subsequent linked pages are not a substitution of the first page. The example was not a matter of discrediting, but simply illustrating. Subsequent pages give further further examples of alternatives. There's no "advertising," as this is a government information site not that of a private company with commercial interests. Indeed, R2000 Manitoba gives equal or more play to reducing thermal bridging by reducing the amount of conventional wood framing--24" o.c. and other advanced framing techniques. Thermal bridging may not the be all and end all of insulation/sealing considerations. But it is clearly a very important issue that is widely ignored in current Codes that blithley prescribe R Values that are typically implemented in ways that result in effective R Values way below the supposed standard....See MoreBest Ceiling Paint for Farrow & Ball, BM Aura
Comments (11)I just primed, and painted my ceiling with Farrow & Ball primer, and Wimborne White in the Estate Emulsion. It's a nightmare. It's flashing after a third top coat. The primer went on beautifully, and looked better than the Estate Emulsion. At this point, I don't know what to do. I'm considering the BM Waterborne paint, but I've read that flashes, too. Any thoughts anyone? For my time, and money, I definitely won't be using Farrow & Ball on a ceiling again. I'm hoping a professional painter can salvage the Blazer Red, I've put on the walls. So far Farrow and Ball for me has been a huge disappointment....See MoreDo we have a major problem?

I hauled over 500 pounds of paint per load and put it in my garage til I was ready to mix it. First I used a paint mixer attached to my electric drill then added different brands of white and creamy white primer and flat paints together into a 5 gallon plastic. I made sure each 5 gallon bucket had a lid so the paint wouldnÂt dry out during storage. I ended up with at least four 5 gallon buckets of a beautiful creamy white primer. It is very durable and doesnÂt mar or rub off. Then after deciding which color for each room I put together the satin finish colors that closely matched my desired room color(s). I had to go to different paint stores for extra tint. Some of the paint was gloppy and rust around the paint can rims which I used also. Once I was ready to paint I strained it through pantyhose into another clean 5 gallon bucket. Everyone said the paint would be ruined since it sat in an unheated attic and garage for several months. But this paint turned out beautiful on my walls. The painters love painting with the paints that I mixed and said itÂs the best quality paint they have ever used. They canÂt believe how well it has turned out and especially since the outdoor temperature in an unheated house where it was stored has dropped down to 19 degrees a couple of times. IÂm not a fan of painting myself but it has been quite an expience plus lots of fun working with the painters. IÂm glad I stood my ground by insisting on using the paint that I mixed since other painters wanted to use their own brand of paint. Then another painter wanted to spray paint. As a result of using my own paint mixes the walls are gorgeous and the colors add drama to each room....See MoreFarrow and Ball Paint users
Comments (28)Mtn - Fan deck is the only thing with accurate colors. The little folding giveaway color cards aren't accurate -- maybe better now but I wouldn't trust them. The colors included in the deck used to depend on when you buy it LOL. So some of us who have them from different times check in if we don't have the color we need. They have introduced quite a few new colors over the last few years and they retire some though no idea how -- trends I suppose. Years back there was a whole group of us painting at the same time. We practically had our own F&B forum. That's when we found how how these colors depended on latitude. One of my friends, who lived in VA, painted her old DR chairs Joa's White. When we went to lunch they looked fabulous. I tried that color in my apartment and it looked like I had pinned up old flesh-colored 1920s slips all over the wall. The color was literally nauseating in my house. Kitchendetective, who you may know, is in Texas. She was talking about using Brinjal in her living room. I'd need Vit D injections if I used that color in my house. So I always love to see the rooms after they are painted. I hope sis finds a blue that works for her....See Morebuffalotina
