How to keep dry cereal fresh?

DH & I don't eat much cereal anymore. I'm lactose intolerant; he's diabetic. I get the LI milk which is fine for cereal and cooking. But, we get to hankerin' cereal and it's nice to have it on hand when the kids come....so, what's the best way to keep it fresh as the weeks go by and it's not been used?

If I put it into plastic containers, should I leave it in the waxed liner sack it comes in?

Tupperware makes cereal containers. I bet many other brands are out there too. You don't need the plastic sacks too.

I roll up the plastic sack and stick a clothes pin over it, you could use those clips made for sacks. I am like you, don't eat it often, but want it handy when I do want it. I just got the clothes pins so I could have a never ending supply (I got a pk of 100!) I keep them in a jar on the cabinet so they are always handy.

All of my dry goods go into either these: Lock and Locks or these: Click Clacks I found a set of large lock lock (or some knock off equivalent) at Costco that will hold 5-10+lbs of flour, rice, cereal or sugar when I buy in bulk. I use the round cannisters of various sizes to store sugar, flour, rice, pasta, beans, bread crumbs or anything else that the moths used to get into. I also occasionally put out some of the those sticky moth traps. The traps have been empty for awhile now. The only problems I've really had after using the containers: -flour mites: even in the container I got an infestation of flour mites. As some indicated, this means they were in the flour to begin with. The nice thing was that the mites were contained in the bin so I just had to dump it all and clean the bin and they weren't all over everything else in my dry storage -beetles: when I buy bird seed for my birds it often has beetles and/or eggs. If I don't freeze these first they'll multiply and become evident in a short period of time. However, the containers WILL prevent flour moths and beetles from getting into your dry goods if they aren't already in them.

shee, just mixing CS in a spray bottle with water makes a pretty good stain remover. I mix a single green scoop in either a small (hair size) or large (household size) spray bottle. I use really hot water so it will dissolve readily. And shake it really well, too. It's a good pre-treatment for laundry. Denims that are particularly grubby I've sprayed it on and let it sit overnight, then wash in CS as normal. It also does wonders if boots have dripped on car upholstery in winter and left dark stains from slush. I could never get that stuff out, no matter what I tried. I just spray it on upholstery stains (but stop short of saturating it), gently rub with a damp towel, maybe let it sit for a couple minutes and blot with a clean, damp towel. Sometimes it takes a repeat, but it does a really good job on car upholstery and carpet or rug stains. I've added white vinegar to the rinse cycle in the past. My mom used to use it sometimes, I sort of followed her lead. It's supposed to cut soap & fabric softener residue build-up in clothes. I don't do it nearly as often since switching to Charlie's soap. Mostly towels, and this reminds me it wouldn't hurt to do them again. I would watch the machine, and when it was going into the rinse cycle I would add maybe a 1/2 cup or so. I would just put my hand in the tub & swish it around so it got evenly distributed in the water. Then close the lid and let the machine finish. If I was doing a load that had to have fabric softener, I'd do two rinses. First one with fabric softener like normal, then the second with just the vinegar and water.

One if the kids usually brings the milk into the dining room. My littles are 8, 7, and 5. They self-serve cereal in the dining room. Most days, the milk doesn't stay out for a very long time. I felt like we always spilled the full bowl of milk/cereal walking from the kitchen to the dining room. The doorway is 30" and there is a couple of inch step down, so the doorway is a great spot to bump one another. And DD1 would always want more milk and/or cereal adding to the back and forth. So this set up works better for us. Yes, we still have spills, but at least we have eliminated some of the mess. This set up moved weekday breakfast out of the kitchen and made room for weekday lunch making. As soon as we find some extra tea spoons (sandbox is likely) I'll have breakfast spoons in the dinning room too. Sometimes I do have to grab a plate or bowl from the dining room to plate, but (thanks to our small dimensions) the small hutch with the plates is just steps (about 4 feet) away from my cooking spot. So our set up isn't that much of an inconvenience. I like the 3 drawer stack too. Wish I had another 3 drawer stack.... Good luck.

I am getting close to 50 and the biggest change I've noticed is my feet. I keep them well moisturized and do my nails same as always, but the foot itself looks bonier and thinner-skinned and just old. My toes even look longer. I wear sandals 9 months a year so this is hitting me where it hurts. I have had good luck with my skin, which I attribute to wearing SPF 15 every day since age 24 and not smoking. I just started to get a line between my eyebrows this year, even though I am a big scowl-er due and squint-er due to poor vision. I do wish I paid more attention to my manicure, but I don't. I buff smooth every Sunday night and leave it at that unless I am going to a special event. I think updating eyeglasses and shoes is important for me to feel my best. I am hunting for new frames now and always on the lookout for comfy shoes that don't read "old". Some funky/casual styles that gals with smaller feet can get away with look like orthopedic shoes on my size 10s. Others' responses remind me that I need to drink more water and sweat sometimes. My DDs are makeup hobbyists and they really like TooFaced, but it hadn't occurred to me to try it. Hearing that the lipstick lasts may send me rummaging through their stashes--pale lips are my genetics and I hate them!

I just ready a tip page that suggested keeping cereal in the refrigerator to keep it fresh. Suppose the freezer would work too. I would vacuum seal it but that doesn't help if you don't have one! Air tight is the main thing.

put it in whatever container you want/have and keep in freezer~`that will not affect the taste and can be eaten right out of the freezer as well....I do that all the time

try using soy milk instead of dairy for your lactose issue~~with cereal,you'll never know the difference

Zip lock bags are the best in my opinion. T-ware seals are good, but they aren't tight enough to keep weevils out if you happen to get an infestation--I know that for a fact, from personal experience--so they aren't totally air-tight,either. Cereal will keep quite a long time, if it's in a ziplock bag.

I suggest in the freezer in a zip locked bag. I know potato chips will stay fresh and crisp, all summer, or until gone, if kept in the freezer. I do this at the cabin all the time.

Substantially evacuate the air in the bag in which they came, fold the top several times, stick a clothespin or two on the folded top of the bag.

It's the goodies in the stuff that deteriorates - and almost all of that was taken out in the processing.

The brown grain moths will eat nuts, some cookies and whole wheat flour - but won't touch white flour or processsed cereal: they're smarter'n we humans!

Keep it tightly sealed - I have had a mouse jump out into my face! Actually it has happened to a couple of people and one man had a heart condition - which caused further damage. A heck of a shock - not to mentioned the what the mouse might have left in the Bran Buds!

When I moved to FL from NH it was suggested to keep cereal, flour, sugar, crackers, chips etc. in the freezer. I've been doing that for the last 6 years and it works great. I also keep potatoes and onions in the fridge and bring them to room temp before using. There is no such place as dry and dark, unless you use the AC 12 months per year. Which I refuse to do.

My mom used to freshen stale cereal in the oven. She would pour it out in a thin layer in a jelly roll pan, turn on the oven very, very low, and leave it for quite a while. It works if you keep the temp low and leave it in long enough. Taste it to be sure it is freshened.
