Thanks. Diane, I had already done it by the time you posted. The pieces my mother tea dyed way back in the 60âÂÂs look greatâ¦so I will not worry unnecessarily about this one. It is also purchased, not one my grandmother made, so not a family heirloom. I did one course with tea, it was not dark enough. The rest of the piece was also a more pinkish beige, whereas the tea dyed portion was a golden beige. So I did it over again using coffee and little beet juice mixed in (I had just happened to make boiled beets the day before!). It is now slightly darker than the rest. Were it to fade a bit now, it would match quite closely. When I guessed it would be dark enough I squeezed out all the water by putting it between two towels and sitting on it. An interesting thing happened though. The side that was bottommost is lighter than the side where I actually applied the tea/coffee. It is almost an exact match. Somehow the color was more squeezed out on the bottom surface. This gives me then a lighter side and a darker side! So with potential future fading, I have options for which side to lay uppermost. Lazygardens, does the vinegar and salt need to be any particular proportion? Because the dyed section is just a portion of the whole piece, I would be painting it on, just like I applied the tea, not soaking it.

The motifs are connected as you make them. She connected the motifs in a kind of jagged or incomplete circle and used the cloth and laundered it. I have to mend it where thread has torn in the chains of "webbing" that connect the motifs. I bought cream thread, and I hope it won't look too bad. I will mark her motifs in colored thread and make them the center of the rectangular cloth. I may skip the tea dying and let him decide if he wants to do it and include instructions. I ordered thread, found one that will work, made sample motifs and washed and dried them to shrink to see how well I can match her gauge. She crocheted very, very tightly, so I am using a much smaller hook and making the stitches as tight as I can. I am now ready to go. Took a break to make some Baby Surprise Jackets and a layette for a new baby. I will let you know how it is going.

I bought the same problem that you have. The fabric was way below normal price and thought I was getting a deep brown rust. It was named sassafras. My mind went there with visions of what the syrup looked like. It turned out to be a deep, rich, purple. Beautiful, but not possible. The darn lights in stores change everything. Now I ask to take something outside to get correct colors. I too considered dying, but after looking at the cost of dyes and doing it right, the idea wasn't worth it with 25 yards. Even looked at a tea dye process. Know you have less, suspect 10 at least, which is still a gamble. My concern is not having full dye coverage and ending up with faded areas. Am still considering a professional dyer, just haven't gone there. Right now the fabric is at my daughters, she loves purple and would make great drapes for her. Now I keep searching for the same fabric in the color wanted, but sure can't find the price deal.

Yep and this is why you won't find a single liquid laundry detergent that contains sodium percarbonate. You will find liquid detergent such as ALL with Oxi or Tide with Bleach Alternative but neither one have any sort of oxygen bleach instead they have more surfactants and a enzyme cocktail. But as for oxygen bleach not hurting colors or darks it sure will, perhaps not right away, but keep using it and it will after all its a bleach. It will not strip color like chlorine bleach but it will fade. My favorate for vintage whites and lights is Biz powder. It has the oxygen bleach and enzymes to help remove stains. You can also order a more pure oxygen bleach without all the fillers on Amazon, just look up sodium percarbonate. Its cheaper than Oxiclean and is 99% oxygen bleach. Much more cost effective.
