Painting basement stairs

Hi

This seems to be a weird problem. I want to paint an old set of wooden basement stairs. They appear to have been painted in oil and then there was one of those carpet stair runners on it, which I've taken off.

I plan to prime and paint them this spring. The trouble, however, is, how do I avoid painting myself into a corner? Obviously, I'd have to start at the top, but then I'll be stuck in the basement until the paint is dry enough to walk on (no exit from the basement and the windows are too small to climb out of very easily).

I guess I could find a good book to read, but there must be another way.

If I were to paint half of each step first, let it dry, and then paint the other half, would I end up with an obvious line down the middle? (I am not putting the carpet back) It's only a basement staircase, but I'd like a neat-looking finish.

This seems a silly problem but I wonder if anyone else has dealt with this.

C.
