Dryer Sheets and Hershey Bar Wrappers...

Can you imagine a greeting card made with a used dryer sheet and a Hershey bar wrapper? The dryer sheet reminded me of the mulberry paper sold for crafting, although a little thinner. And I just could not throw out the gold foil wrapper after eating a Hershey chocolate bar! So I ironed the gold foil - it made a nice crinkly surface on it, ironed the dryer sheet to smooth it, and then put them together with a leftover piece of red cardstock and a blank card...

Here's a close-up of the card...

(Later I added some little drops of 'glittering crystal dimensional paint' around one red heart.)

The gist of this post is that there are crafting materials right in your wastebasket! The trick is to 'see' the usefulness of the items before they end up in the trash!

Now you please tell the rest of us about the found objects/materials you have used in paper crafting!

That's a nice idea about the dryer sheet. After reading your post I thought why not run a colored stamp pad over the sheet and make colored "mulberry" paper.

Great idea, Minnie! Yeah, most of the "mulberry paper" is colored. I was at Michaels recently and actually bought one 8-1/2 x 11" piece for 59 cents... but it was sooooo pretty... dark blue with dimensional silver stars and dots on it. I knew I couldn't make one like it for that price. Thought it would make a good "starry night" background on a card.

I love the idea of using the hair conditioner for shaving legs. I need to try that one. My husband has used dryer sheets in his pockets when he is out camping and it does work to keep the mosquitoes away. Baby oil is great to remove the oil sludge from your skin that you sometimes get down at the beach (and most of us are avoiding many beaches along the Gulf for that very reason!) We found this out last summer when we were down by Corpus Christi and one of my boys had it on his legs. Brunettes - Use soy sauce as a rinse in your hair to enrich the natural color. Comb it through your hair and let it sit for a few minutes, then rinse. I need to add this list of helpful hints link to my favorites so I can pop back and refer to it later. It's important to wash the lint screen periodically no matter what softener product you use. I use white vinegar in the rinse and NO fabric softener of any kind - liquid OR sheets. I hang my laundry out on an inside or outside clothes line, thus avoiding the cost of the dryer and the need for a softener. Since using Charlie's Soap, there are NO stiff clothing items - even those hung on the line. If I do use the dryer, I have added a couple dryer balls which help to reduce wrinkles, reduce drying time by 25-50% and reduce static (although it does not completely eliminate static). Avoiding man-made fabric is a good way to eliminate static in the dryer. Fabric softeners in the forms of sheets and liquids are a dangerous comfort I choose to eliminate from my laundry, and you may want to reconsider using it - especially if you have children's clothing or a smoker in the house, where accidently lighting clothing or bedding on fire might be a high possibility, or you have someone in the family who has respiratory (breathing) difficulties. "Fabric softeners used on fluffy materials like your childÂs fleece pajamas or your terrycloth robe and towels can increase flammability." "Fabric softener perfumes often contain ethyl acetate, benzyl alcohol, camphor, ethanol (which is on the EPA Hazardous Waste list), limonene, linalool, and a-Terpineol. These chemicals cause respiratory irritation and even failure, headache, nausea, dizziness, anemia, liver and kidney damage, CNS disorders, and respiratory edema Â and many of them have the EPA warning to wash hands after handling!" "Most of the dangerous chemicals in fabric softeners are most dangerous when inhaled Â whatÂs the first thing you do when you take your fluffy, sweet-scented clothes out of the dryer?" If you've ever eliminated these toxins from your laundry, the next time someone passes you with these heavy-scented laundry products on their clothing, you'll gasp from the exposure to the toxins. Hey. Thought I'd stop in here for a sec while I'm downloading the pics of my glass block and wrapped candy bars. I see no one has been here though. I guess you are all busy busy. I think my Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)is starting to kick in. I've been very lethargic and feel yucky today. I called and got out of all the things I was supposed to be doing today. Just played with my 4 year old building block castles and knocking them down all morning and didn't get much else done. All this snow just really gets to me. I did take DD clothes shopping after school. She is growing like a weed so I couldn't get out of that one. ha And I did run her to her church basketball game. Need to get supper started before I have to run DS to scouts. Hey Luvs... do you know if you can cook a pork tenderloin like you do your roast....low temps in the oven with the soup poured over? Ever done one that way? I've been thinking of the roast since you talked about it the other day, but I have the pork loin that I need to cook first. Thinking of doing it tomorrow night for supper. Have no idea yet what I'm making tonight. Something easy. Gotta do valentines tonight and get boxes decorated for the boys to take to school tomorrow for their parties. A tip for small kitchens

This is a great thread! Lots of great ideas and suggestions. Here's what I do to save space in my kitchen. -I store dish towels and cloths in wire bicycle baskets, rather than using up valuable drawer space (I only have 3 drawers in my kitchen!) The baskets are hung on the side of a small wooden cabinet I picked up at an auction. The cabinet also acts as my "pantry" and stores my canned goods and spices. On top of the cabinet is a wooden apple crate where I keep my potatoes. -Although I have 8-foot ceilings, I found I could still have a pot rack. It hangs about 6" from the ceiling and the pots are still over my head. It hangs just above the cabinet mentioned above, and uses what would be wasted space. -The cabinet above my refrigerator was holding items I NEVER used. I hated knowing that space was being wasted, so I removed the doors. After getting rid of the items I didn't use, I put my cookbooks on display on the bottom shelf. A small curtain conceals the upper shelf which holds seldom used items (holidays dishes, etc.) -I moved a low, long dresser into the kitchen. It holds the microwave and breadbox on top, along with cooking utensils and other small appliances we use often. The drawers hold napkins, glass baking dishes, tablecloths, etc. -A small hutch sits next to the "buffet" and holds my collection of milkglass and my nice dishes. I don't use these dishes, so I'm thinking about giving them away. That will free up more usable space. -I removed the doors on the highest cabinets. I can't really use them b/c of the height and they aren't very tall so not much will fit in them. Removing the doors made the kitchen feel larger and provided a place to display my teapot collection. -I also removed another cabinet door. This is where I keep my everyday dishes and glasses. It made the kitchen feel more spacious by not having a wall of cabinets and added more interest to the room. Although there is a lot of STUFF in my kitchen, I'm learning to simplify and keep only the things I use on a daily basis. If I use it once or twice a year, I can probably borrow it when needed. Many items are behind closed doors, so it doesn't appear cluttered (at least not to me!) It's warm and inviting and my favorite room in the house.

Red here is my 2002 Christmas card. I stamped on the Mulberry and then embossed it. It should work on dryer sheets give it a try!!

Wow!!! That is just beautiful, Minnie. You've got a challenge ahead of you to top that one for this year - LOL!

I think the dryer sheets may be too thin (too many holes) to successfully emboss on them. I think about half the little crystals/pellets would drop through the holes. I've never tried to emboss, but think I may have the materials around here - somewhere! It would sure gussy up some of my cards. I'll have to dig around in my supplies and give the dryer sheets a try, and cards, too.

And I sure love your gold background... that means if I want to do that, too, I'll have to eat many more Hershey bars before Christmas!

Are we the only ones here, Minnie?? I really appreciate you responding to my simplistic threads!

The card came out dark on the photo. That was green card stock for the back. The gold was a cut up gold party bag from the party aisle at the craft store. I think it was crumpled up and then smoothed out.

Awww, gee, Minnie! That one is beautiful, too. Can't wait to see your 2004 Christmas card.

Had to laugh at your "The gold was a cut up gold party bag" - just like me, you are seeing "card crafting material" wherever you are and whatever you are looking at! I love to browse the aisles of the dollar stores and look for crafting possibilities in the least likely places.

I never thought of using a dryer sheet for anything but to use in the dryer or stick in a drawer to make the clothes smell good. I'll bet your beautiful card smells real good too. Great job and Beautiful card.
Minnie, your cards are beautiful. I love sending cards and usually just print mine out on the printer.
You gals give me too many ideas and I don't have enough time to do them all. If I ever get to retire I will never be bored. I have enough ideas to last me a lifetime.

Great Cards Gals and Red...keep eating those hershey bars. I work at a whole sale distributor so now everytime I have to look up something from Hershey I'll think of you and your gold foil.

I've used dryer sheets for paper crafts, also. I added a bit of fabric paint to some water and tinted some. It turned out pretty neat - kind of a tye-dye look.

I wonder what effect stamping and embossing on a new sheet would be. Then moistening it to get the stiffness out. When I try it I'll let you know.
