Ok, so this is the second time I've asked about strange ingredients, but...
Hubby took a few days off and we toodled around Austin like we were tourists. We went to this place called Chinatown Center. Basically a strip center with all things Asian. Lots of restaurants, etc., and an Asian Market. We were in that store for 2 hours! Aahhing, oohing, and scratching our heads about things.
I bought a few things that I knew what to do with but I also bought some peeled split mung beans (dried). I have no idea what to do with them. Anyone out there know? I haven't googled yet, so don't do so on my behalf unless you are curious yourself. Thought I would check here first and go from there.
I also purchased some pure, fresh tamarind in a plastic jar (concentrated). I have an Indian cook book that often calls for tamarind paste in the recipes. I've never been able to find tamarind paste and once I just kind of winged it, using tamarind pods. Had no clue what I was doing, but the tamarind added a wonderful flavor. I thought I could just use the juice and reduce other liquids in a recipe. What do you think? This product is from Thailand.
Ingredients: Pure tamarind (concentrate) for instant serve for cooking or drinking. No preservative added and no artificial color.
Any thoughts or ideas will be appreciated. We had a blast! Kind of felt like we took a trip to another country, lol. The weather was perfect, the food was good, and the market was confusing but fun.
