Anyone have a foam mattress topper?

My bed is too hard!!! I got a latex topper, but it's still too firm. I was thinking of trying a visco-elastic foam pad, like Tempurpedic. If you have one, how thick is it? They have 2" and 3". I'm looking at one on overstock.com.

Jen, We got several more years out of our expensive pillow top mattress by using a memory foam topper. First, I just cut the pillow top off and threw it away. With a mattress topper, the bed felt as good as new. Then, when the mattress itself started showing a permanent dip, I turned the mattress over and used the "unusable" side of our mattress with the topper. The "wrong side" of the mattress was extremely firm but still felt ok with the memory foam on it. That worked great for another couple of years but now the bottom shows a dip in the middle so it's time for a new mattress. I'm tempted to find a firm hotel-style mattress and then tune it up with a good quality topper. It sure seems that even the best mattresses come with pillow tops that don't last as long as the rest of the mattress.

Susan, I don't use a mattress pad anymore. I just laid the foam toppers on top of the mattress. I know what you mean about feeling like crying. I'd have to look it up, but I think I my present mattress was my fifth one in four years. I was lucky that I got my money back on all the others, as they were inspected and found to be defective. I think 90% of the mattresses made today are defective! I hung out for a long time on a mattress forum, where I learned all the things I wish I'd known when I started mattress shopping.

socks -- Assuming you still own some socks, given Westies' love of stealing them. Eliot passed on my slippers this morning, instead reminding me to run a load of wash by bringing out one of Pop's tube socks from top of his laundry bin. Thanks for the Oski update! We had metal dog food dishes until we had Pip. He was so gentle in everything EXCEPT his dishes, which he upset and pushed all over the kitchen. We switched to heavy ceramics -- sorta like Fiesta Ware. (BTW Pip never was 'altered' until he was about 12 and developed a problem. We had no unspayed females in the area, so it wasn't an issue.) To answer your question: We bought a Simmons 'Carter' Beautyrest (european king size) at Carson's (now owned by Bon Ton Stores in PA). It was $1001 with tax and delivery/take away. No more $2-3K beds for me! I'm going to try less expensive and not feel guilty about replacing them more often. This comes in a 'plush' mode, but we bought the more firm variety -- which is why I'm looking for foam topper info. All our married life we've had Verlo beds except for one disastrous Stearns & Foster -- also from Carson's. It sagged almost immediately. Carson's sent out a little lady from what we called 'the mattress police'. (She may have been affiliated with whoever punishes people who tear off the mattress tag that says, "Do Not Remove"; she refused to say.) She verified that the mattress had sunk inordinately and they replaced it, but it still didn't last long. We still have an excellent, much older S & F twin set in our guest room. (I think S & F went into some kind of slump; don't know if they're better again now.

I'm not asking about memory foam or any other foam (been there--too warm). Getting a latex foam mattress at this time is not in the cards, although I read many good reports! I've done a search and read lots of related threads but most are 3+ years old. I am hoping someone has more recent experiences or can share how awesome your own latex topper has been for many years! I'm thinking a 2" would be good (queen). Also, how much attention should be paid to the firmness numbers--which are a bit confusing because I have no jumping off point. Thanks!

They're expensive-well over $100 for a twin. My daughter has one and her bed is unbelievably comfoirtable! She bought it at Linens and Things, now closed.

Hard to shop for one of these. Too few websites tell me everything I want to know:

How thick is the foam, in inches? (Two inches is plenty for me.)

How dense is the foam (should be at least 40 lbs.)?

What are the measurements of the piece? (If it's 'KING' is it 78" X 80" or is it cut short?)

Is it made to 'breathe' or will I *roast* lying on it?

What's the warranty and where can I return it?

How much does it weigh?

Well, I went ahead and purchased the one below. Chisue, there is quite a bit of information on the linked page, plus links to the "Buyers Guide" for more information. I don't think they are returnable to overstock.com, but I've seen them at Kohls and Marshalls where they might be returnable if used. Anyway, they would be nearly impossible to repack and get in a box to ship back, plus costly to ship.

I previously purchased a latex pad (a little different from memory foam), but it's still too firm. I'll put it on the guest bed. So I'm trying the memory foam now. Sometimes I wonder if I'm just OLD and nothing will feel good! LOL!

We got ours at Costco. It's four inches and it came with a quilted cover. It is really really comfortable. BUT we bake in there. When DH isn't home, I'm fine, but when the two of us are in there that thing keeps us too warm some nights.

Susan, depending on the thickness of both pads, you might want to put the latex on top of the memory foam to keep the memory foam from getting too hot. That's what I did. I've had my toppers for two or three years now, and am very happy with them.

We have had ours (topper) for several years, and put the whole mattresses (both from Costco) in our motorhome and guest bedroom. It is amazing to see the whole mattress expand inside the motorhome. Coming out? I wonder. Heavenly to sleep on! Nanny

We have had a two inch topper for about 5 years. It came with a very nice mattress pad type cover, plus I put our mattress pad over that. Both of these are thickly padded on top with a faux down material. I am very hot natured and was afraid I wouldn't be able to sleep because of heat. Well, the two pads over it work and I can still feel the foam. It is not at all hot. It is heavenly to sleep on. My son and his wife just bought the Thermapedic mattress. Can't wait to go visit and try sleeping on it. If it's as good as I expect it will be, my next mattress purchase with be the Thermapedic.

I have a regular old spring-filled mattress, with a (fake) sheepskin on top, which was on aunt's bed, plus a foam pad on top, less than an inch thick, shaped like egg crate/carrier, that I brought from my earlier place.

Sleep like a log.

But then ... my ex- used to say, 40 years ago, that I could sleep any time ... and any place.

P.S. Sometimes, when I can't remember something ... do you think that it'd help if I had some "memory foam" ... in my head?
