I love your idea Karen! and may copy it for couples and start having dinner parties in honor of the occasion. I guess I am somewhere in between with Valentine's Day. The first year we were together, we mutually agreed that it was a commercial holiday and not to buy gifts. What happened was, when he took his dad grocery shopping, the elder asked him what he was getting me for Valentine's Day and when he said "nothing" the elder made him purchase flowers and candy. What makes it funny is that his dad is so tight and practical with money he squeaks. When he showed up at my door with flowers and candy, my eyes went wide and asked if I misunderstood regarding our deal. That same year, I must have gotten shot in the tush with cupids arrow because I wrote a poem and had it read to him at work in front of his coworkers. I don't know what possessed me. I don't write poems. When I didn't from him all day, I started to worry. LOL He is not one for attention. He said it let him know that we were on the same page. I still think he must have been mortified. We will probably order a carryout and avoid any crowded restaurants. I didn't expect anything or plan anything but he suggested we go to a jewelry store (who could say no to that?that offer doesn't come around often) together Wednesday after we had lunch. We were not "dressed" so to speak but there was a VERY nice, down to Earth young lady transplanted from New Orleans who was kind enough to give us the time of day wonderful service. All of the plastic people ignored us. :) I picked out something unpretentious that I will wear regularly. Happy Valentine's Day Ya'll

That sounds cute, Minnie.:) I used to decorate with the flat posterboard cut-outs when the kids were still young and at home. And I loved the tradition of helping them with their valentines. Our granddaughter lived with us up until last January, and I loved helping her with her valentines too....and brainstorming ideas for her valentine box for school. In the years that the teacher didn't ask for students and their parents to make valentine boxes, I always made her a large fancy envelope of some kind to take her valentines to school, and then bring hers home at the end of the day. I always made sure she had special clothes for that day too - red or pink with hearts, etc. Special valentine socks and hair doo-dads...nails done with hearts painted on them... Which reminds me, I'd better start looking for a special t-shirt and socks to mail to her. A couple of times I surprised her on Valentine's day by having hung strings of yarn with all sizes of red, pink, white and lavendar paper hearts attached to them, in her doorway, while she was asleep the night before. She and I used to make 'posters' for the door too, by cutting out the shape from poster board - in this case a big heart - then cutting squares of red and pink tissue paper and gluing them on. The method is to put your finger in the middle of the square, bringing up the rest of the square around your finger, then only gluing the 'point' (where your finger is) down. You do these right up next to each other to cover the shape. It makes a fluffy, dimensional heart. They are easy and fun to do, and look much better than the work you put into it...more bang for your buck, as the saying goes. BUT, as to any decorating this year, I doubt I will do much. It will probably consist of putting a pink table topper in the center of our table, and maybe adding some kind of vase with flowers or something. I used to collect figural vases and planters, and I wish I had one with a Valentine theme, but I don't think I do... I'll have to look. Wanda in South Texas http://wanderinglily.blogspot.com/
