Hi, Nance. I didn't miss your post; I was busy typing and didn't notice it until after I'd posted. Thank you very much. You too, Mike. ;o) Jodi - I agree with what you said, but there are always going to be people who afford themselves the luxury of an opinion w/o the inconvenience of thought, often w/o the inconvenience of feeling obligated to someone who might be relying on the information or advice. To me, it seems like the two facts that should stop us in our tracks when we feel like caving to the temptation to post when we don't have command of the topic, are: We should feel obligated to whoever we are talking to (to be sure our information is true/accurate/reliable .....), and to whoever might be listening in, to be sure that what we say is sound. That, and I know I would be afraid someone who really DOES know what they're talking about will come along behind me and make a fool of me for posting over my head (when I don't know what I'm talking about), and help me destroy my own credibility. For most people, I think the forums provide a place to learn and to socialize. Everyone doesn't prioritize the same way, so some care more about one than the other. Personally, the forums are more about learning, though I think you can tell that I really enjoy the social intercourse as well. I've made many wonderful friends here and at other sites. I do learn quite a bit in my travels @ GW, but in most cases I tend to slip into more of a teaching role. I know it irks some people who are quick to label the propensity arrogant, but most of the people I'm trying to help seem to appreciate the effort. Speaking of learning, I thought there to be a considerable amount of sagacity in some of these quotes: It's what you learn after you know it all that counts. ~Attributed to Harry S. Truman A single conversation with a wise man is better than ten years of study. ~Chinese Proverb Education consists mainly of what we have unlearned. ~Mark Twain (good one) Man's mind, once stretched by a new idea, never regains its original dimensions. ~Oliver Wendell Holmes A closed mind destroys the ability to learn. ~ Al Some people will never learn anything, for this reason, because they understand everything too soon. ~Alexander Pope The ink of the scholar is more sacred than the blood of the martyr. ~Mohammed I am always ready to learn although I do not always like being taught. ;o) ~Winston Churchill Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. ~Henry Ford You have learned something. That always feels at first as if you had lost something. ~H.G. Wells (Great) I have never in my life learned anything from any man who agreed with me. ~Dudley Field Malone Every act of conscious learning requires the willingness to suffer an injury to one's self-esteem. That is why young children, before they are aware of their own self-importance, learn so easily. ~Thomas Szasz The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn. ~Alvin Toffler You don't understand anything until you learn it more than one way. ~Marvin Minsky People learn something every day, and a lot of times it's that what they learned the day before was wrong. ~Bill Vaughan Particularly poignant as it applies to growing things, because of how rapidly our understanding and technology has advanced, is: Learning is like rowing upstream: not to advance is to drop back. ~Chinese Proverb Al

These are "nutshell" answers since envelope issues are tough to diagnose over the internet. The HRV is an exchanger, but if your house is tight and your winter interior humidity is high, it'll exchange stale humid interior air for fresh dry exterior air while minimizing heat loss during the exchange. A blower door test is usually part of a more comprehensive analysis which could run a few hundred dollars. $200-$400 depending on the thoroughness of the inspection. If your house is excessively tight then it might make sense to install make-up air duct for the furnace. If you have an HVAC company out there, often times they'll do envelope and blower door tests. With all the "green" garbage going on, there are a lot of folks jumping on the bandwagon just as "energy consultants." If you're going to have work done, many companies will credit the cost of the blower door test and other analysis towards the cost of future modifications. Backtracking and peeking at the larger picture, basements can be a source of moisture vapor. Moisture vapor and maybe even liquid through rubble foundations, or vapor through poured concrete or block foundations. Think of it this way: You tightened up your house, which lessens moisture removal, but if your basement is a source of moisture vapor, it's still adding moisture vapor to the house. If it applies to you, a good thing to do is to minimize as best as you can air movement from the unconditioned basement into the conditioned living space above. Go in the basement and look up. Any gaps in the basement ceiling that lead into the house above (plumbing penetrations, electrical penetrations, hvac penetrations, etc) can be sealed with canned foam. It makes sense to do the same thing in the attic floor if the attic is unconditioned. The goal is to keep the conditioned air that you're paying to condition within the thermal envelope of the house. It's not a sexy job, mostly elbow grease, but walking and crawling around your house and shooting gaps with foam can have great effect. With those DIY cans of foam like Great Stuff, it's best to uncover the gaps first, then fill them all at once. Ling delays between trigger actuations can allow foam to cure in the nozzle.

no mechanical air supply

Greetings Malc, thats an interesting question that probably has no good answer. If you are comparing two equally leaky buildings in Warm Vs Cool climates, I dont think either climate has the advantage. Its more about where the air leaks are infiltrating from and what damage the exfiltrating air is doing on its way out. Its possible that in extremely cold weather, the stack effect would be driving more air exchange between two equally leaky buildings. This may seem healthier but if the air is coming from a vented crawlspace, slab cracks, the garage, or wall cavities with mold/mildew problems then the air could be worse and more likely contributing to rotting the roof/attic on its way out. In all climates, building tight with blower door tested verification and introducing outdoor air with mechanical ventilation is the direction of what most consider smart building.

Refrigerator. Do you remember to do this?
Q

Thanks. A great tip, dedtired. You should post this in the Discussions. Refrigerator works the same way as an air conditioner mechanically. The "coil" is called condensing coil. Sometimes under the unit, sometime vertically in the back. Sometimes there is a little fan to help cool the coil which will also need cleaning. If it is not cleaned, the coil cannot dissipate heat well, the compressor will overwork against greater back pressure, your fridg will not cool efficiently, you will pay more in electric charge, and your unit will breakdown eventually with an expensive compressor replacement fee. For many models, you also should take out the tray under the unit to completely wash it. That's the tray to catch water from the freezer defrosting. It is disgusting the dried up dirt collected on it. Also, there may be a little tube that goes from the freezer to the tray which drains freezer water to the tray. You will find there is a lot of gummy green growth inside the tube which will need to be cleaned. If you have dogs and cats, you will need to clean the coil more often. dcarch

I used to exercise to their music every morning for a year when they were popular.
When I hear I'm All Out of Love, I can remember the stretching exercises.
I am glad you got to see them in person.

Oh yes. I remember them better than I remember yesterday!

Making Love Out Of Nothing At All

I know just how to whisper
and I know just how to cry
I know just where to find the answers
and I know just how to lie

I know just how to fake it
and I know just how to scheme
I know just when to face the truth
and then I know just when to dream

And I know just where to touch you
and I know just what to prove
I know when to pull you closer
and I know when to let you loose

And I know the night is fading
and I know that time's gonna fly
And I'm never gonna tell you
ev'rything I've got to tell you
But I know I've got to give it a try

And I know the roads to riches
and I know the ways to fame
I know all the rules and then
I know how to break them
and I always know the name of the game

But I don't know how to leave you
and I'll never let you fall
And I don't know how you do it
Making love out of nothing at all
(Making love) out of nothing at all
(Making love) out of nothing at all
(Making love) out of nothing at all
(Making love) out of nothing at all
(Making love) out of nothing at all
(Making love) out of nothing at all

Ev'ry time I see you all the rays of the sun
Are streaming through the waves in your hair
And ev'ry star in the sky is
taking aim at your eyes like a spotlight

The beating of my heart is a drum
and it's lost and it's looking for a rhythm like you
You can take the darkness from the pit of the night
and turn into a beacon burning endlessly bright
I've got to follow it
'cause ev'rything I know
Well it's nothing till I give it to you

I can make the run or stumble
I can make the final block
And I can make every tackle
at the sound of the whistle
I can make all the stadiums rock

I can make tonight forever
Or I can make it disappear by the dawn
And I can make you every promise
That has ever been made
and I can make all your demons be gone

But I'm never gonna make it without you
Do you really want to see me crawl?
And I never gonna make it like you do
Making love out of nothing at all
(Making love) out of nothing at all
(Making love) out of nothing at all
(Making love) out of nothing at all
(Making love) out of nothing at all
(Making love) out of nothing at all
(Making love) out of nothing at all....!
