Market Day - Oct. 17

It was very cold for the vendors at yesterday's market - down to 47 degrees F - which is pretty cold when you are standing/sitting around for several hours. I was there with a table full of breads and rolls and another table filled with my quilting and sewing crafts. I had another good day selling wise.

Some interesting things that happened:

~ two ladies walked up and said "we'd like 10 loaves of Amish Wheat bread" - my sort of shocked response was "well, I have 3 loaves left" so they bought those three and a loaf of 100% whole wheat each with plans to split the third loaf in half! We discussed how silly the laws were that allowed me to make bread in my kitchen and sell it at the market, but that I couldn't make bread in the same kitchen and deliver it to a customer???

~ one customer buying Bow Knot rolls asked about placing an order for several packages of rolls before Thanksgiving to put in the freezer

~ one regular bread customer liked my little girls' aprons and ordered a smaller one for her granddaughter and I put aside the larger one she liked for her other older granddaughter - the two girls are sisters and like pink.

~ I had four bags of breadsticks and sold only one, so maybe I won't do breadsticks again?

I'm thinking of taking my last few days of vacation on some Friday's before the end of the market season so I can make some extra breads to sell. We'll see how the traffic is the next couple of weeks.

Teresa, I've been following your market reports weekly, but somehow I missed the fact that you cannot deliver bread. So many state laws are antiquated, but this one really doesn't make sense.

I'm so glad you are continuing to market your bread! The world needs more home-made goodies!

Mindy and Dee, I don't think you should cry about missing opportunity. It was a complete disappointment for me. I had to be at work ((35-40min drive from BAN) by 10am sharp, so I was by the gate at 8:15 and by 8:45 left home empty handed. Shrubs and trees section was full of common names (grown by someone else, not by BAN) and whatever was out of HD nomenclature was so puny looking that price wouldn't even matter. The only things that was in salable/presentable condition were cornus kousa 'Samaritan' (nice 5' tree-form in 15G, but I already have two) and heptacodiums of different sizes. I might missed something, but unless they were hiding some 'treasures' somewhere, it wasn't something you'd expect from BAN. I had no interest in perennials, so can't report on that department.

Oh, Nancy, I just thought, maybe one of your fish mongers could be there, at least taking orders, since you're right on The Lake? (sigh) I suppose that's wishful thinking but it would sure be nice, you could do your grocery shopping before you ever went home and without going to the store! I've eaten your baked goods and they're better than any I've had at the most upscale of restaurants and fancy bakeries, so I'm sure you will continue to do well. Some people might even like it inside better, not having to worry about weather. lbpod, my library is small and full of books too, but most comunities have civic centers, conference rooms in their city hall, township buildings, etc. I only wish I could convince my small county that a year round farmer's market is a good idea. We have two summer markets in the county and they do a booming business in the summer, it would be nice to find all the vendors in one place in the winter too. We have two permanent farm markets but they close for the winter. One is having "pick your own chestnuts" right now, but that'll end the first week of November, then it will close. I can go pick up local honey, maple syrup, organic locally made cheese, whatever, but it would sure be nice to do it all in one spot, under a roof, in a heated space, and with one of Nancy's cinnamon rolls and a cup of coffee! Teresa I also follow your market reports and like to hear how you're doing every week. That's a surprise and a shame that you can't deliver isn't it.

Well I hope you continue to do well in the remaining weeks and can also sell some of your quilting and sewing items.

When does the season end " usually ".
We had a lot of cold fronts coming in but
it may warm up for a spell.

If it start's up again in the Spring you will have to think " Production "
You'll be busy, so if you want, I'll come on down and test your goodies.

The season for this market ends Nov. 14 and starts up again May 4.

Lou, you are welcome to come on down and taste, but be forewarned that I may put you to work in the kitchen! lol!

"Production" is nearly impossible while I am still working full-time. I bake on Wed., Thurs, and Fri. nights - sometimes up until midnight. Then I have to get up and go to work the next day. I didn't get my kitchen totally cleared until Sunday. I sure can make a mess.

I got the solution !!!
Get a large freezer and bake all winter.

Then all you have to do is sell all summer, to pay for the freezer.lol !!!

Teresa, it does sound like your business is picking up, and maybe you'll get some winter/holiday business too, that would be a good thing and maybe a start of a whole new venture.

Good luck, and wear a heavy coat and gloves next week!

Annie, I did wear my knit cap and gloves Saturday! I'm glad to know you are still enjoying your wall hanging! That was very sweet of you.

Hey Teresa how is this idea for a 'delivery' solution: tell your customers you will have a table set out in front of their house at exactly X PM (time of your choice) and they can come out and buy it from you ROFLMAO

I agree with not doing frozen bread....my kids (and DH) can tell the difference :-( sure is a pain to choose to not freeze. I have a challah in my freezer that I didn't use one Friday night, really really well wrapped, and I just KNOW if I try to sneak it out I'll get busted!

jessy, someone told me today that I could sell my breads from a table in front of MY house and it would be legit. But I'm not going to risk that.

I plan to make some more "Egg Braids" (aka challah) this weekend. They looked so pretty and are really good. I used the recipe in the link -- looked pretty authentic to me. What do you think of the recipe?

Grandma Rosies recipe is close to mine. I was surprised.
I use milk instead of water and sub a cup of WW flour.
Maybe a little more Sugar?

Your Brading is a lot neater than mine. Guess mine is Rustic.
But it tastes Goooood !!!

Teresa - 'authentic'? You kidding? Challah = flour, yeast, water, salt, oil, eggs, maybe sweetener, and braided. Your choice of proportions for each. So, sure your recipe is 'authentic'. If its for a Jewish clientele, usually no dairy; I use vegetable oil. I also use honey instead of sugar. Some use raisins, but not in my house. I'm sure yours is perfect!

Barnmom, I'll foist it on an unsuspecting host next time we go anywhere bwahahhaa. Hey its better than store bought, they won't know the difference.

I looked thru many recipes on the Internet that are supposed to be Authentic, or Traditional.
Some even gave a sort of Jewish history lesson.

Most of them use Sugar. Some use Sugar and Honey.Some use Honey.
Some use Milk ?????

I know you are very Religious !!! What is the difference in your Challah.

I don't make Challah. I make Braided Bread but not as neat as some others but
I could if wanted to.

The taste and texture is there so I use it also for
my Cinnamon Bunns, Bagles and other things.

Just curious to know the real difference !!!!!
