yes, this week I got two. Carol (Readinglady) and I exchange emails regularly about canning, cooking, family, gardening, whatever. She knows I've been crazy busy with my stepmom's stuff, Amanda's wedding, Ashley's graduation, a new boss, just lots of things going on. Oh, and Carl, The Sausage King, just retired, so now I have to find a new meatcutter, darn it. Hey, he was an important cog in my farming machine!

So, anyway, I came home a couple of days ago and found a box on my front porch. I didn't remember ordering anything, but I thought maybe there was a late wedding item or something. I took the box inside and the return address was Oregon. Yes indeed, Carol struck again:

She said that she saw this little guy and just knew that he belonged with me. He lives on my fireplace hearth now, blocking the draft that whistles down the chimney in the winter and leaks out the doors. The Dead Cat loves it and curls up next to him. Cooper is afraid of it and Bud and Makayla call it my "love puppy". (grin)

Isn't he cute? And useful! I love him, so thanks, Carol, for thinking of me. He makes me smile whenever I see him.

It's a Philodendron. The large "trunk" shows the scars of leaves that have formed and fallen over the years. The smaller ones are offsets which appear to have developed their own root systems and could probably be (gently) separated and moved to pots of their own. The plant in an outdoors tropical situation would use those roots to scale something - a tree stump or rock, going ever higher seeking light, and use the roots for support as well as nourishment along the way. A tribute to the tenacity of life, but it would grow better with improved light and fertilizer.

I'm late to join the party here, but I'm glad y'all had a great visit. I see the resemblance, but I wouldn't have thought of it if Dedtired hadn't brought it up. Neither picture of Fergie is good. The first one looks like she hadn't slept in days, and the second one is too photo shopped or airbrushed to look like her. The pic of Robin is great, though. I don't know if I'll ever make it to the Chicago or midwest area, but it looks like a great city to visit, and Annie was a wonderful tour guide. Sally

I had something like that attack my Earth Angel last year. Parts of leaves and some petioles completely mush and smelled bad. Was it dead fish? Possibly. I removed affected parts and treated the whole area with Serenade. It's a strain of Bacillus subtilis and should be safe to use around everything. Erwinia is listed on the label (as is Sclerotinia). Will it work on this particular species? Possibly. The plant and then the disease came back this year but hasn't spread. Treated again with Serenade (early May?) and the plant didn't die but didn't seem completely cured either. Then I treated with Southern Ag Garden Friendly Fungicide - Bacillus amyloliquefaciens strain D747 (over a month ago). That seems to have done the trick, but the slugs really like this (and only this) plant in my garden this year. For now, I'm letting it be and sort of keeping it on the dry side. Only $26 a pint and you use 1 tsp/gallon. I went out and took a closer look. There are some dried damaged leaves and a couple leaves showing fresh signs and one small petiole wilted. Probably after the day of thunderstorms three days ago. And yes it does smell like dead fish. I took a couple of pics. You can see the fresh rot at 8:30 and 4:00 from the lower flower.

Thanks, everyone. I think I will get it for her (and possibly get one of the deeply discounted ones for myself). I had really wanted the deep plum colour as it is one she wears well and know she loves, but it doesn't seem to be offered. I'm looking at the deep pink instead which, I think will compliment the wardrobe staples she already has in the deep plum. Mairecate, thank you for the specific info on Garnet Hill. I could probably find similar elsewhere, but it is a company I'm comfortable ordering from and it's good to know the quality of theirs is solid. Also, hearing from many that they are good for travelling is another selling point. Travelling is her passion and she and my FIL would take several trips a year. My FIL has not been well and she has dearly missed travelling the last couple of years. I'm thinking (with some sadness) that she will be able to travel again on her own before too long and that this would be useful. Localeater, all of those uses would be likely scenarios in my own life and make me want one of my own. My MIL has always chosen gifts for myself and my family with great care. I try to do the same for her, but admit, it is not my forte. Thanks, again for helping me to choose something special. I'll try to remember to update once it is given.

Yes, Jim, that IS the last straw, darn it. Carl's been cutting meat for my family for four generations. It was a terrible blow....

That is just wonderful. I got shivers looking at it and thinking of the wonder weiner:) What a perfect pick me up. I am so sorry to hear about Carl, A good meat cutter is worth his weight in gold. Maybe he will come out of retirement a couple times a year just to butcher for you :)

Carol is at the top of my list for 'Most Gracious Cooking Forum Member'. Nice that you have this pooch to keep you company inside, sort of a companion to your outside friend (was that one from AnnT in a swap?). Of course we can't forget Cooper, LOL.

Yes, Carol is definitely gracious anda thoughtful, isn't she. In addition, she's my "bread guru" and canning buddy and I've never gotten a bad recipe from her!

What a sweet gift! And useful to boot, bonus. Smiles. I do congratulate you on the cool gift but boy, that sure is some bad news about Carl. That's pretty devastating news for you and the animals too really. They deserve the best from Mother to table. Ah well, life. I'm sure after four generations Carl needs his rest. Wonder if he will recommend any possible replacements. Smiles. Enjoy your retirement Carl.

I do hope Carl IS enjoying his retirement. His daughter tells me that he has a "new lady friend", and that they are taking ball room dancing lessons. I find that just entertaining as heck, Carl doing the waltz instead of packing beef!

I observed a moment or so of silence in Carl's honor. His brother, Dallas, will still do my slaughter for me, but I've got to find a new place to do the actual cutting and packaging. That means that at least my animals, for now, will not have to be trucked or shipped or handled by anyone except me, and their eventual end will be the same process as it has always been, and performed as quickly and humanely as possible.

Di, I haven't heard from Larry in a few months. The last time we talked, he'd been dating a woman who was a school teacher and was planning to get married. That made me happy, and it's what Janet would have wanted to happen.

Incidentally, she was a teacher too.

That's great Annie. That's a heavy duty job he did. The poor guy had to retire to have time to find a girlfriend. Ooops.. lady friend. Smiles. I was thinking that it was a relative that did the slaughter, so I'm glad you still have Dallas for that. I know you'll always make sure your animals are taken care of right, up til the end and beyond.

coconut, I don't think I could raise beef any other way, so I have to find processes and facilities that allow me to be absolutely "hands on", making sure my animals are well treated and cared for, always, and maintained in a way that's as sustainable and environmentally friendly as I can make it. If I couldn't do that, I'd stop raising beef and start raising grapes or something...
